The strong enhancer element in the immediate early region of the human cytomegalovirus genome
The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a
member of the herpesvirus group, was found to
possess a strong transcription enhancer in the
immediate early gene region. Co-transfection
of enhancerless SV40 DNA with randomly fragmented
HCMV DNA yielded two SV40-like recombinant
viruses , each containing HCMV DNA fragments that
were substituting for the missing SV40 enhancer.
The two inserts , 341 and 262 bp in length , are
overlapping segments of genuine viral DNA representing
part of the 5'flanking region of the
major immedistte early gene i n HCMV. Studies
with deletion mutants showed that different nonoverlapping
subsets of the HCMV enhancer region
can substitute for the 72 bp repeats of SV40.
Transient expression assays indicated that the
HCMV enhancer is significantly stronger than the
SV40 element, activating cis-linked heterologous
promoters in a wide spectrum of cultured cells.
It appears that the HCMV enhancer is positively
regulated by viral immediate early genes
The phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model: a variational Monte Carlo study
We investigate the phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model at half-filling with the variational Monte Carlo method for both the magnetic and the paramagnetic case as a function of the interlayer hopping t\u3c4 and on-site Coulomb repulsion U. With this study we resolve some discrepancies in previous calculations based on the dynamical mean-field theory, and we are able to determine the nature of the phase transitions between metal, Mott insulator and band insulator. In the magnetic case we find only two phases: an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at small t\u3c4 for any value of U and a band insulator at large t\u3c4 . At large U values we approach the Heisenberg limit. The paramagnetic phase diagram shows at small t\u3c4 a metal to Mott insulator transition at moderate U values and a Mott to band insulator transition at larger U values. We also observe a re-entrant Mott insulator to metal transition and metal to band insulator transition for increasing t\u3c4 in the range of 5.5t < U < 7.5t. ICMR 2014: 4th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval
ICMR was initially started as a workshop on challenges in image retrieval (in Newcastle in 1998 ) and later transformed into the Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR) series. In 2011 the CIVR and the ACM Workshop on Multimedia Information Retrieval were combined into a single conference that now forms the ICMR series. The 4th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval took place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 1 – 4 April 2014. This was the largest edition of ICMR to date with approximately 170 attendees from 25 different countries. ICMR is one of the premier scientific conference for multimedia retrieval held worldwide, with the stated mission “to illuminate the state of the art in multimedia retrieval by bringing together researchers and practitioners in the field of multimedia retrieval .” According to the Chinese Computing Federation Conference Ranking (2013), ACM ICMR is the number one multimedia retrieval conference worldwide and the number four conference in the category of multimedia and graphics. Although ICMR is about multimedia retrieval, in a wider sense, it is also about automated multimedia understanding. Much of the work in that area involves the analysis of media on a pixel, voxel, and wavelet level, but it also involves innovative retrieval, visualisation and interaction paradigms utilising the nature of the multimedia — be it video, images, speech, or more abstract (sensor) data. The conference aims to promote intellectual exchanges and interactions among scientists, engineers, students, and multimedia researchers in academia as well as industry through various events, including a keynote talk, oral, special and poster sessions focused on re search challenges and solutions, technical and industrial demonstrations of prototypes, tutorials, research, and an industrial panel. In the remainder of this report we will summarise the events that took place at the 4th ACM ICMR conference

Demographic trade-offs predict tropical forest dynamics
Understanding tropical forest dynamics and planning for their sustainable management require efficient, yet accurate, predictions of the joint dynamics of hundreds of tree species. With increasing information on tropical tree life histories, our predictive understanding is no longer limited by species data but by the ability of existing models to make use of it. Using a demographic forest model, we show that the basal area and compositional changes during forest succession in a neotropical forest can be accurately predicted by representing tropical tree diversity (hundreds of species) with only five functional groups spanning two essential trade-offs—the growth-survival and stature-recruitment trade-offs. This data-driven modeling framework substantially improves our ability to predict consequences of anthropogenic impacts on tropical forests
Humid Evolution of Haze in the Atmosphere of Super-Earths in the Habitable Zone
Photochemical hazes are expected to form and significantly contribute to the
chemical and radiative balance of exoplanets with relatively moderate
temperatures, possibly in the habitable zone of their host star. In the
presence of humidity, haze particles might thus serve as cloud condensation
nuclei and trigger the formation of water droplets. In the present work, we are
interested in the chemical impact of such a close interaction between
photochemical hazes and humidity on the organic content composing the hazes and
on the capacity to generate organic molecules with high prebiotic potential.
For this purpose, we explore experimentally the sweet spot by combining
N-dominated super-Earth exoplanets in agreement with Titan's rich organic
photochemistry and humid conditions expected for exoplanets in habitable zones.
A logarithmic increase with time is observed for the relative abundance of
oxygenated species, with O-containing molecules dominating after 1 month only.
The rapidity of the process suggests that the humid evolution of N-rich organic
haze provides an efficient source of molecules with high prebiotic potential
Growth Strategies of Tropical Tree Species: Disentangling Light and Size Effects
An understanding of the drivers of tree growth at the species level is required to predict likely changes of carbon stocks and biodiversity when environmental conditions change. Especially in species-rich tropical forests, it is largely unknown how species differ in their response of growth to resource availability and individual size. We use a hierarchical Bayesian approach to quantify the impact of light availability and tree diameter on growth of 274 woody species in a 50-ha long-term forest census plot in Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Light reaching each individual tree was estimated from yearly vertical censuses of canopy density. The hierarchical Bayesian approach allowed accounting for different sources of error, such as negative growth observations, and including rare species correctly weighted by their abundance. All species grew faster at higher light. Exponents of a power function relating growth to light were mostly between 0 and 1. This indicates that nearly all species exhibit a decelerating increase of growth with light. In contrast, estimated growth rates at standardized conditions (5 cm dbh, 5% light) varied over a 9-fold range and reflect strong growth-strategy differentiation between the species. As a consequence, growth rankings of the species at low (2%) and high light (20%) were highly correlated. Rare species tended to grow faster and showed a greater sensitivity to light than abundant species. Overall, tree size was less important for growth than light and about half the species were predicted to grow faster in diameter when bigger or smaller, respectively. Together light availability and tree diameter only explained on average 12% of the variation in growth rates. Thus, other factors such as soil characteristics, herbivory, or pathogens may contribute considerably to shaping tree growth in the tropics
An information-theoretic framework for semantic-multimedia retrieval
This article is set in the context of searching text and image repositories by keyword. We develop a unified probabilistic framework for text, image, and combined text and image retrieval that is based on the detection of keywords (concepts) using automated image annotation technology. Our framework is deeply rooted in information theory and lends itself to use with other media types.
We estimate a statistical model in a multimodal feature space for each possible query keyword. The key element of our framework is to identify feature space transformations that make them comparable in complexity and density. We select the optimal multimodal feature space with a minimum description length criterion from a set of candidate feature spaces that are computed with the average-mutual-information criterion for the text part and hierarchical expectation maximization for the visual part of the data. We evaluate our approach in three retrieval experiments (only text retrieval, only image retrieval, and text combined with image retrieval), verify the framework’s low computational complexity, and compare with existing state-of-the-art ad-hoc models
