    Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome in Term Neonates Treated with Phenobarbital versus Levetiracetam: A Single-Center Experience

    BACKGROUND: Phenobarbital (PB) has been traditionally used as the first-line treatment for neonatal seizures. More recently, levetiracetam (LEV) has been increasingly used as a promising newer antiepileptic medication for treatment of seizures in neonates. OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to compare the effect of PB vs. LEV on short-term neurodevelopmental outcome in infants treated for neonatal seizures. METHOD: This randomized, one-blind prospective study was conducted on term neonates admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of S. Bambino Hospital, University Hospital "Policlinico-Vittorio Emanuele," Catania, Italy, from February 2016 to February 2018. Thirty term neonates with seizures were randomized to receive PB or LEV; the Hammersmith Neonatal Neurological Examination (HNNE) was used at baseline (T0) and again one month after the initial treatment (T1). RESULTS: We found a significantly positive HNNE score for the developmental outcomes, specifically tone and posture, in neonates treated with LEV. There was no significant improvement in the HNNE score at T1 in the neonates treated with PB. CONCLUSION: This study suggests a positive effect of levetiracetam on tone and posture in term newborns treated for neonatal seizures. If future randomized-controlled studies also show better efficacy of LEV in the treatment of neonatal seizures, LEV might potentially be considered as the first-line anticonvulsant in this age grou

    Uniform current in graphene strip with zigzag edges

    Graphene exhibits zero-gap massless-Dirac fermion and zero density of states at E = 0. These particles form localized states called edge states on finite width strip with zigzag edges at E = 0. Naively thinking, one may expect that current is also concentrated at the edge, but Zarbo and Nikolic numerically obtained a result that the current density shows maximum at the center of the strip. We derive a rigorous relation for the current density, and clarify the reason why the current density of edge state has a maximum at the center.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; added references and corrected typos, to be published in J.     Application of an artificial neural network (ANN) for the identification of grapevine genotypes

    Neural networks were employed to distinguish between 15 accessions of "coloured" (fruit gives intense red colour to the wine) grapevines found in some viticultural zones of Tuscany. Our results enabled us to distinguish, with considerable certainty, between 9 accessions and to denote three pairs of synonyms. The use of neural networks opens interesting prospects for ampelography; its advantages over traditional ampelographic methods are demonstrated

    The RASSCALS: An X-ray and Optical Study of 260 Galaxy Groups

    We describe the ROSAT All-Sky Survey-Center for Astrophysics Loose Systems (RASSCALS), the largest X-ray and optical survey of low mass galaxy groups to date. We draw 260 groups from the combined Center for Astrophysics and Southern Sky Redshift Surveys, covering one quarter of the sky to a limiting Zwicky magnitude of 15.5. We detect 61 groups (23%) as extended X-ray sources. The statistical completeness of the sample allows us to make the first measurement of the X-ray selection function of groups, along with a clean determination of their fundamental scaling laws. We find robust evidence of similarity breaking in the relationship between the X-ray luminosity and velocity dispersion. Groups with sigma < 340 km/s are overluminous by several orders of magnitude compared to the familiar LX ~ sigma^4 law for higher velocity dispersion systems. An understanding of this break depends on the detailed structure of groups with small velocity dispersions sigma < 150 km/s.Comment: 16 pages, including 6 figures.     Methodology for a comparison between intermediate costs from tax-source and from national accounting

    This paper deals with the possibilities of reconciliation that might be done between intermediate consumption calculated from business tax return and data from national accounts. This study has been carried out both in France, based on data from direct taxes, and in Italy, based on data from VAT (value added taxes). Many issues raised by the comparison of intermediate consumption of various activities in both approaches are here examined in a quite detailed manner. The potential interest of this study is double. On the one hand, it lights up the possibilities of using tax-source in order to evaluate intermediate consumption in national accounts. From this point of view, it allows to focus on some difficulties that may contribute to adjust further work. On the other hand, the issue of gaps analysis as regards business overstatement of their costs is considered. At a sufficient aggregated level, intermediate consumption from tax-source proved to be quite systematically higher than the one obtained from national accounts statistics.     High prevalence of anti-hepatitis e virus antibodies among blood donors in central Italy, february to march 2014

    Prevalence of anti-hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies is highly variable in developed countries, which seems partly due to differences in assay sensitivity. Using validated sensitive assays, we tested 313 blood donors attending a hospital transfusion unit in central Italy in January and February 2014 for anti-HEV IgG and IgM and HEV RNA. Data on HEV exposure were collected from all donors. Overall anti-HEV IgG prevalence was 49% (153/313). Eating raw dried pig-liver sausage was the only independent predictor of HEV infection (adjusted prevalence rate ratio = 2.14; 95% confidence interval: 1.23–3.74). Three donors were positive for either anti-HEV IgM (n = 2; 0.6%) or HEV RNA (n = 2; 0.6%); they were completely asymptomatic, without alanine aminotransferase (ALT) abnormalities. Of the two HEV RNA-positive donors (both harbouring genotype 3), one was anti-HEV IgG- and IgM-positive, the other was anti-HEV IgG- and IgM-negative. The third donor was positive for anti-HEV IgG and IgM but HEV RNA-negative. HEV infection is therefore hyperendemic among blood donors (80% men 18–64 years-old) from central Italy and associated with local dietary habits. Nearly 1% of donors have acute or recent infection, implying potential transmission to blood recipients. Neither ALT nor anti-HEV IgM testing seems useful to prevent transfusion-transmitted HEV infection. © 2016, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

    Cluster Dynamical Mean-field calculations for TiOCl

    Based on a combination of cluster dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and density functional calculations, we calculated the angle-integrated spectral density in the layered s=1/2s=1/2 quantum magnet TiOCl. The agreement with recent photoemission and oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments is found to be good.     UV excess galaxies: Wolf-Rayet galaxies

    We discuss V and R band photometry for 67% of the Sullivan et al. 2000 SA57 ultraviolet-selected galaxy sample. In a sample of 176 UV-selected galaxies, Sullivan et al. 2000 find that 24% have (UV-B) colors too blue for consistency with starburst spectral synthesis models. We propose that these extreme blue, UV excess galaxies are Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies, starburst galaxies with strong UV emission from WR stars. We measure a median (V-R)=0.38+-0.06 for the UV-selected sample, bluer than a sample optically selected at R but consistent with starburst and WR galaxy colors. We demonstrate that redshifted WR emission lines can double or triple the flux through the UV bandpass at high redshifts. Thus the (UV-B) color of a WR galaxy can be up to 1.3 mag bluer at high redshift, and the expected selection function is skewed to larger redshifts. The redshift distribution of the extreme blue, UV excess galaxies matches the selection function we predict from the properties of WR galaxies.Comment: 4 pages, including 4 figures.     A Redshift Survey of Nearby Galaxy Groups: the Shape of the Mass Density Profile

    We constrain the mass profile and orbital structure of nearby groups and clusters of galaxies. Our method yields the joint probability distribution of the density slope n, the velocity anisotropy beta, and the turnover radius r0 for these systems. The measurement technique does not use results from N-body simulations as priors. We incorporate 2419 new redshifts in the fields of 41 systems of galaxies with z < 0.04. The new groups have median velocity dispersion sigma=360 km/s. We also use 851 archived redshifts in the fields of 8 nearly relaxed clusters with z < 0.1. Within R < 2 r200, the data are consistent with a single power law matter density distribution with slope n = 1.8-2.2 for systems with sigma < 470 km/s, and n = 1.6-2.0 for those with sigma > 470 km/s (95% confidence). We show that a simple, scale-free phase space distribution function f(E,L^2) ~ (-E)^(alpha-1/2) L^(-2 \beta) is consistent with the data as long as the matter density has a cusp. Using this DF, matter density profiles with constant density cores (n=0) are ruled out with better than 99.7% confidence.Comment: 22 pages; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Celiac disease and headache in children: A narrative state of the art

    Celiac disease (CD) is one of the most important entity of the wide spectrum of gluten-related disorders (GRDs). It is well known that neurological manifestation can be present either at the onset of CD, or appear during the development of the pathology, and different can be the neurologic findings. Clinical features are very variable, ranging from typical manifestations of gastrointestinal involvement to neurologic symptom. The most frequent neurologic signs reported were headache, epileptic seizure, migraine, mental retardation, ataxia and attention deficit and hyperactive disorder. Headache either in form of migraine, or in non-specific form represents one of the main clinical presentation in CD. The aim of this work is to provide a narrative review of the pediatric literature focused on the cephalalgic features of children with CD evaluating the potential benefits of a gluten free diet (GFD). Papers were identified by searching for related literature in Medline (PubMed) and Embase using the words “Celiac Disease” and “Headache” or “Migraine” by specifying “children”/“paediatric age” for reports published since 1972 till 31th October 2018. According to our inclusion criteria, a total of 25 papers has been evaluated. Although it is still controversial if headache is prevalent in CD children a correct compliance to a GFD seems to improve the neurological symptoms even if the underlying pathogenic relationship between CD and neurologic system involvement is still not fully understood.
