    The Habitable Zone and Extreme Planetary Orbits

    The Habitable Zone for a given star describes the range of circumstellar distances from the star within which a planet could have liquid water on its surface, which depends upon the stellar properties. Here we describe the development of the Habitable Zone concept, its application to our own Solar System, and its subsequent application to exoplanetary systems. We further apply this to planets in extreme eccentric orbits and show how they may still retain lifebearing properties depending upon the percentage of the total orbit which is spent within the Habitable Zone.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astrobiolog

    Field theoretic calculation of the surface tension for a model electrolyte system

    We carry out the calculation of the surface tension for a model electrolyte to first order in a cumulant expansion about a free field theory equivalent to the Debye-H\"uckel approximation. In contrast with previous calculations, the surface tension is calculated directly without recourse to integrating thermodynamic relations. The system considered is a monovalent electrolyte with a region at the interface, of width h, from which the ionic species are excluded. In the case where the external dielectric constant epsilon_0 is smaller than the electrolyte solution's dielectric constant epsilon we show that the calculation at this order can be fully regularized. In the case where h is taken to be zero the Onsager-Samaras limiting law for the excess surface tension of dilute electrolyte solutions is recovered, with corrections coming from a non-zero value of epsilon_0/epsilon.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Characterization of macroinvertebrate communities in the hyporheic zone of river ecosystems reflects the pump-sampling technique used

    The hyporheic zone of river ecosystems provides a habitat for a diverse macroinvertebrate community that makes a vital contribution to ecosystem functioning and biodiversity. However, effective methods for sampling this community have proved difficult to establish, due to the inaccessibility of subsurface sediments. The aim of this study was to compare the two most common semi-quantitative macroinvertebrate pump-sampling techniques: BouRouch and vacuum-pump sampling. We used both techniques to collect replicate samples in three contrasting temperate-zone streams, in each of two biogeographical regions (Atlantic region, central England, UK; Continental region, southeast France). Results were typically consistent across streams in both regions: Bou-Rouch samples provided significantly higher estimates of taxa richness, macroinvertebrate abundance, and the abundance of all UK and eight of 10 French common taxa. Seven and nine taxa which were rare in Bou-Rouch samples were absent from vacuum-pump samples in the UK and France, respectively; no taxon was repeatedly sampled exclusively by the vacuum pump. Rarefaction curves (rescaled to the number of incidences) and non-parametric richness estimators indicated no significant difference in richness between techniques, highlighting the capture of more individuals as crucial to Bou-Rouch sampling performance. Compared to assemblages in replicate vacuum-pump samples, multivariate analyses indicated greater distinction among Bou-Rouch assemblages from different streams, as well as significantly greater consistency in assemblage composition among replicate Bou-Rouch samples collected in one stream. We recommend Bou-Rouch sampling for most study types, including rapid biomonitoring surveys and studies requiring acquisition of comprehensive tax on lists that include rare taxa. Despite collecting fewer macroinvertebrates, vacuum-pump sampling remains an important option for inexpensive and rapid sample collection

    GOODS-HerschelHerschel: identification of the individual galaxies responsible for the 80-290Ό\mum cosmic infrared background

    We propose a new method of pushing HerschelHerschel to its faintest detection limits using universal trends in the redshift evolution of the far infrared over 24ÎŒ\mum colours in the well-sampled GOODS-North field. An extension to other fields with less multi-wavelength information is presented. This method is applied here to raise the contribution of individually detected HerschelHerschel sources to the cosmic infrared background (CIRB) by a factor 5 close to its peak at 250ÎŒ\mum and more than 3 in the 350ÎŒ\mum and 500ÎŒ\mum bands. We produce realistic mock HerschelHerschel images of the deep PACS and SPIRE images of the GOODS-North field from the GOODS-HerschelHerschel Key Program and use them to quantify the confusion noise at the position of individual sources, i.e., estimate a "local confusion noise". Two methods are used to identify sources with reliable photometric accuracy extracted using 24ÎŒ\mum prior positions. The clean index (CI), previously defined but validated here with simulations, which measures the presence of bright 24ÎŒ\mum neighbours and the photometric accuracy index (PAI) directly extracted from the mock HerschelHerschel images. After correction for completeness, thanks to our mock HerschelHerschel images, individually detected sources make up as much as 54% and 60% of the CIRB in the PACS bands down to 1.1 mJy at 100ÎŒ\mum and 2.2 mJy at 160ÎŒ\mum and 55, 33, and 13% of the CIRB in the SPIRE bands down to 2.5, 5, and 9 mJy at 250ÎŒ\mum, 350ÎŒ\mum, and 500ÎŒ\mum, respectively. The latter depths improve the detection limits of HerschelHerschel by factors of 5 at 250ÎŒ\mum, and 3 at 350ÎŒ\mum and 500ÎŒ\mum as compared to the standard confusion limit. Interestingly, the dominant contributors to the CIRB in all HerschelHerschel bands appear to be distant siblings of the Milky Way (zz∌\sim0.96 for λ\lambda<<300ÎŒ\mum) with a stellar mass of M⋆M_{\star}∌\sim9×\times1010^{10}M⊙_{\odot}.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures.     Spitzer and Hubble Constraints on the Physical Properties of the z~7 Galaxy Strongly Lensed by Abell 2218

    We report the detection of a z~7 galaxy strongly lensed by the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.175) at 3.6 and 4.5 um using the Spitzer Observatory and at 1.1 um using the Hubble Space Telescope. The new data indicate a refined photometric redshift in the range of 6.6-6.8 depending on the presence of Ly-alpha emission. The spectral energy distribution is consistent with having a significant Balmer break, suggesting that the galaxy is in the poststarburst stage with an age of at least ~50 Myr and quite possibly a few hundred Myr. This suggests the possibility that a mature stellar population is already in place at such a high redshift. Compared with typical Lyman break galaxies at z~3-4, the stellar mass is an order of magnitude smaller (~10^{9} Msun), but the specific star formation rate (star formation rate/M_{star}) is similarly large (> 10^{-9} yr^{-1}), indicating equally vigorous star-forming activity.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

    FIRBACK is a one of the deepest surveys performed at 170 microns with ISOPHOT onboard ISO, and is aimed at the study of cosmic far infrared background sources. About 300 galaxies are detected in an area of four square degrees, and source counts present a strong slope of 2.2 on an integral "logN-logS" plot, which cannot be due to cosmological evolution if no K-correction is present. The resolved sources account for less than 10% of the Cosmic Infrared Background at 170 microns. In order to understand the nature of the sources contributing to the CIB, and to explain deep source counts at other wavelengths, we have developed a phenomenological model, which constrains in a simple way the luminosity function evolution with redshift, and fits all the existing deep source counts from the mid-infrared to the submillimetre range.     Toward a script theory of guidance in computer-supported collaborative learning

    This article presents an outline of a script theory of guidance for computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). With its four types of components of internal and external scripts (play, scene, role, and scriptlet) and seven principles, this theory addresses the question how CSCL practices are shaped by dynamically re-configured internal collaboration scripts of the participating learners. Furthermore, it explains how internal collaboration scripts develop through participation in CSCL practices. It emphasizes the importance of active application of subject matter knowledge in CSCL practices, and it prioritizes transactive over non-transactive forms of knowledge application in order to facilitate learning. Further, the theory explains how external collaboration scripts modify CSCL practices and how they influence the development of internal collaboration scripts. The principles specify an optimal scaffolding level for external collaboration scripts and allow for the formulation of hypotheses about the fading of external collaboration scripts. Finally, the article points towards conceptual challenges and future research questions

    The extragalactic background and its fluctuations in the far-infrared wavelengths

    A Cosmic Far-InfraRed Background (CFIRB) has long been predicted that would traces the intial phases of galaxy formation. It has been first detected by Puget et al.(1996) using COBE data and has been later confirmed by several recent studies (Fixsen et al. 1998, Hauser et al. 1998, Lagache et al. 1999). We will present a new determination of the CFIRB that uses for the first time, in addition to COBE data, two independent gas tracers: the HI survey of Leiden/Dwingeloo (hartmann, 1998) and the WHAM Hα_{\alpha} survey (Reynolds et al 1998). We will see that the CFIRB above 100 micron is now very well constrained. The next step is to see if we can detect its fluctuations. To search for the CFIRB fluctuations, we have used the FIRBACK observations. FIRBACK is a deep cosmological survey conducted at 170 micron with ISOPHOT (Dole et al., 2000). We show that the emission of unresolved extra-galactic sources clearly dominates, at arcminute scales, the background fluctuations in the lowest galactic emission regions.
