Transition from subbarrier to deep subbarrier regimes in heavy-ion fusion reactions
We analyze the recent experimental data of heavy-ion fusion cross sections
available up to deep subbarrier energies in order to discuss the threshold
incident energy for a deep subbarrier fusion hindrance phenomenon. To this end,
we employ a one-dimensional potential model with a Woods-Saxon internuclear
potential. Fitting the experimental data in two different energy regions with
different Woods-Saxon potentials, we define the threshold energy as an
intersect of the two fusion excitation functions. We show that the threshold
energies so extracted are in good agreement with the empirical systematics as
well as with the values of the Krappe-Nix-Sierk (KNS) potential at the touching
point. We also discuss the asymptotic energy shift of fusion cross sections
with respect to the potential model calculations, and show that it decreases
with decreasing energies in the deep subbarrier region although it takes a
constant value at subbarrier energies.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Transverse Momentum in Semi-Inclusive Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering and the Spin-Flavor Structure of the Proton
The non-valence spin-flavor structure of the nucleon extracted from
semi-inclusive measurements of polarized deep inelastic scattering depends
strongly on the transverse momentum of the detected hadrons which are used to
determine the individual polarized sea distributions. This physics may explain
the recent HERMES observation of a positively polarized strange sea through
semi-inclusive scattering, in contrast to the negative strange sea polarization
deduced from inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering.Comment: 4 pages, revtex style, 2 figure
Time-dependent Internal DFT formalism and Kohn-Sham scheme
We generalize to the time-dependent case the stationary Internal DFT /
Kohn-Sham formalism presented in Ref. [14]. We prove that, in the
time-dependent case, the internal properties of a self-bound system (as an
atomic nuclei) are all defined by the internal one-body density and the initial
state. We set-up a time-dependent Internal Kohn-Sham scheme as a practical way
to compute the internal density. The main difference with the traditional DFT /
Kohn-Sham formalism is the inclusion of the center-of-mass correlations in the
functional.Comment: 13 pages. To be published in Phys. Rev.
A Game of Attribute Decomposition for Software Architecture Design
Attribute-driven software architecture design aims to provide decision
support by taking into account the quality attributes of softwares. A central
question in this process is: What architecture design best fulfills the
desirable software requirements? To answer this question, a system designer
needs to make tradeoffs among several potentially conflicting quality
attributes. Such decisions are normally ad-hoc and rely heavily on experiences.
We propose a mathematical approach to tackle this problem. Game theory
naturally provides the basic language: Players represent requirements, and
strategies involve setting up coalitions among the players. In this way we
propose a novel model, called decomposition game, for attribute-driven design.
We present its solution concept based on the notion of cohesion and
expansion-freedom and prove that a solution always exists. We then investigate
the computational complexity of obtaining a solution. The game model and the
algorithms may serve as a general framework for providing useful guidance for
software architecture design. We present our results through running examples
and a case study on a real-life software project.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, a shorter version to appear at 12th

Theory of phonon-assisted "forbidden" optical transitions in spin-gapped systems
We consider the absorption of light with emission of one S(tot)=1 magnetic
excitation in systems with a spin gap induced by quantum fluctuations. We argue
that an electric dipole transition is allowed on the condition that a virtual
phonon instantaneously breaks the inversion symmetry. We derive an effective
operator for the transition and argue that the proposed theory explains the
polarized experiments in CuGeO(3) and SrCu(2)[BO(3)](2).Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Effects of a multi-component exercise program and calcium–vitamin-D3-fortified milk on bone mineral density in older men : a randomised controlled trial
Summary We examined the independent and combined effects of a multi-component exercise program and calcium–vitamin-D3-fortified milk on bone mineral density (BMD) in older men. Exercise resulted in a 1.8% net gain in femoral neck BMD, but additional calcium–vitamin D3 did not enhance the response in this group of older well-nourished men.Introduction This 12-month randomised controlled trial assessed whether calcium–vitamin-D3-fortified milk could enhance the effects of a multi-component exercise program on BMD in older men. Methods Men (n  = 180) aged 50–79 years were randomised into: (1) exercise + fortified milk; (2) exercise; (3) fortified milk; or (4) controls. Exercise consisted of high intensity progressive resistance training with weight-bearing impact exercise. Men assigned to fortified milk consumed 400 mL/day of low fat milk providing an additional 1,000 mg/day calcium and 800 IU/day vitamin D3. Femoral neck (FN), total hip, lumbar spine and trochanter BMD and body composition (DXA), muscle strength 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were assessed. Results There were no exercise-by-fortified milk interactions at any skeletal site. Exercise resulted in a 1.8% net gain in FN BMD relative to no-exercise (p < 0.001); lean mass (0.6 kg, p < 0.05) and muscle strength (20–52%, p < 0.001) also increased in response to exercise. For lumbar spine BMD, there was a net 1.4–1.5% increase in all treatment groups relative to controls (all p < 0.01). There were no main effects of fortified milk at any skeletal site. Conclusion A multi-component community-based exercise program was effective for increasing FN BMD in older men, but additional calcium–vitamin D3 did not enhance the osteogenic response.<br /

Evidence of large nuclear deformation of S formed in Ne + C reaction
Deformations of hot composite S formed in the reaction Ne
( 7 -- 10 MeV/nucleon) + C have been estimated from the respective
inclusive -particle evaporation spectra. The estimated deformations for
S have been found to be much larger than the `normal' deformations
of hot, rotating composites at similar excitations. This further confirms the
formation of highly deformed long-lived configuration of Ne + C
at high excitations ( 70 -- 100 MeV) -- which was recently indicated from
the analysis of the complex fragment emission data for the same system.
Exclusive -particle evaporation spectra from the decay of hot composite
S also show similar behaviour.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Hadronization in heavy ion collisions: Recombination and fragmentation of partons
We argue that the emission of hadrons with transverse momentum up to about 5
GeV/c in central relativistic heavy ion collisions is dominated by
recombination, rather than fragmentation of partons. This mechanism provides a
natural explanation for the observed constant baryon-to-meson ratio of about
one and the apparent lack of a nuclear suppression of the baryon yield in this
momentum range. Fragmentation becomes dominant at higher transverse momentum,
but the transition point is delayed by the energy loss of fast partons in dense
matter.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; v2: reference [8] added; v3: Eq.(2) corrected,

Analysis of reaction dynamics at RHIC in a combined parton/hadron transport approach
We introduce a transport approach which combines partonic and hadronic
degrees of freedom on an equal footing and discuss the resulting reaction
dynamics. The initial parton dynamics is modeled in the framework of the parton
cascade model, hadronization is performed via a cluster hadronization model and
configuration space coalescence, and the hadronic phase is described by a
microscopic hadronic transport approach. The resulting reaction dynamics
indicates a strong influence of hadronic rescattering on the space-time pattern
of hadronic freeze-out and on the shape of transverse mass spectra. Freeze-out
times and transverse radii increase by factors of 2 - 3 depending on the hadron
species.Comment: 10 pages, 4 eps figures include
