    A preliminary assessment of the accuracy of selected meteorological parameters determined from Nimbus 6 satellite profile data

    Published rms errors in rawinsonde data and discrepancies between satellite and rawinsonde profile data for temperature, dewpoint temperature, mixing ratio, and wind speed. Satellite rms errors were found to be 2 to 3 times as large as those for rawinsonde data. Gradients of the preceding parameters were computed for both rawinsonde and satellite data and compared with means and near extreme values computed from the AVE 2 and AVE 4 experiments. In all cases, it was found that satellite data can be used to determine with relatively good accuracy the near extreme gradients but not those whose value does not exceed the average. Synoptic charts were prepared to show that patterns of temperature could be determined with relatively good accuracy, while those of dew point were not as good as those for temperature. Winds represented by cloud motion vectors (satellite winds) were compared with rawinsonde winds, and it was found that large gaps exist in satellite values for a given pressure level and that errors in the satellite determined concluded that satellite profile data are very useful in synoptic analysis, particularly in data sparse regions as well as regions where near extreme gradients exist in the measured parameters

    The use of aerial- and close-range photogrammetry for the mapping of the Lavini di Marco tracksite (Hettangian, Southern Alps, NE Italy)

    (EXCERPT FROM ABSTRACT) Close-range photogrammetry was executed following the procedure proposed by Mallison & Wings (2014). More than seventy 3D models were obtained and interpreted by means of color-coded and contour line images, which allow to improve the ichno- logical knowledge of the tracksite. The 3D models of the best-preserved tracks were used for the osteological reconstruction of the trackmakers’ autopodia, supposing the arthral position of the phalangeal pads. Three indirect methods were used to correlate tracks and their trackmakers: (i) synapomorphy-based approach; (ii) phenetic correlation; (iii) coincidence correlation (see Carrano & Wilson, 2001) The final map was produced with different level of knowledge due to the distribution of tracks and current state of site preservation. Furthermore, it represents a complete documentation that will be used for future work of enhancement, preservation and valorization of the tracksite. The ichnotaxonomical review of the quadrupedal trackways led us to emend the diagnosis of Lavinipes cheminii Avanzini et al. (2003) and to assign several other sparse tracks and trackways to L. chemini. The skeletal reconstruction of fore and hind limbs points towards Gongxianosaurus sp. as the most suitable trackmaker of L. cheminii. The herein supposed Laurasian affinity of the Lavini di Marco dinosaur assemblage clashes with the previous hypotheses that always link the Southern Alps sector with the Gondwana mainland

    Determination of Strange Sea Quark Distributions from Fixed-target and Collider Data

    We present an improved determination of the strange sea distribution in the nucleon with constraints coming from the recent charm production data in neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering by the NOMAD and CHORUS experiments and from charged current inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. We demonstrate that the results are consistent with the data from the ATLAS and the CMS experiments on the associated production of W±W^\pm-bosons with cc-quarks. We also discuss issues related to the recent strange sea determination by the ATLAS experiment using LHC collider data.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figure

    Strange and non-strange distributions from the collider data

    We check the stability of the ABMP16 fit with respect to modifications of quark PDFs suggested in the recent literature: the strange sea enhancement and a positive non-vanishing d/ud/u ratio at x→1x \to 1. These possibilities are examined using test versions of the ABMP16 PDF fit which demonstrate no need of those changes. Furthermore, we localize peculiar features in other analyses which are responsible for a different behaviour of the PDFs obtained. The strange sea enhancement can be explained by a choice of the PDF shapes being not flexible enough and therefore leading to an over-suppressed dd-quark distribution. This suppression has to be compensated by a corresponding rise by the ss-quark distribution. As a result, an unusually large strange sea suppression factor is obtained. The non-vanishing value of d/u∣x=1d/u\vert _{x=1} becomes consistent with zero in case the higher-order QCD corrections to the D{\O} WW-asymmetry data, which drive its value, are taken into account. Furthermore, the related ee-asymmetry sample prefers a slightly negative value of d/u∣x=1d/u\vert _{x=1}, although it is consistent with zero.     Research Note:<br>Derivation of temperature lapse rates in semi-arid south-eastern Arizona

    International audienceEcological and hydrological modelling at the regional scale requires distributed information on weather variables, and temperature is important among these. In an area of basin and range topography with a wide range of elevations, such as south-eastern Arizona, measurements are usually available only at a relatively small number of locations and elevations, and temperatures elsewhere must be estimated from atmospheric lapse rate. This paper derives the lapse rates to estimate maximum, minimum and mean daily temperatures from elevation. Lapse rates were calculated using air temperatures at 2 m collected during 2002 at 18 locations across south-eastern Arizona, with elevations from 779 to 2512 m. The lapse rate predicted for the minimum temperature was lower than the mean environmental lapse rate (MELR), i.e. 6 K km?1, whereas those predicted for the mean and maximum daily temperature were very similar to the MELR. Lapse rates were also derived from radiosonde data at 00 and 12 UTC (5 pm and 5 am local time, respectively). The lapse rates calculated from radiosonde data were greater than those from the 2 m measurements, presumably because the effect of the surface was less. Given temperatures measured at Tucson airport, temperatures at the other sites were predicted using the different estimates of lapse rates. The best predictions of temperatures used the locally predicted lapse rates. In the case of maximum and mean temperature, using the MELR also resulted in accurate predictions.     The modular organization of brain cortical connectivity across the human lifespan

    The network architecture of the human brain contributes in shaping neural activity, influencing cognitive and behavioral processes. The availability of neuroimaging data across the lifespan allows us to monitor how this architecture reorganizes, influenced by processes like learning, adaptation, maturation, and senescence. Changing patterns in brain connectivity can be analyzed with the tools of network science, which can be used to reveal organizational principles such as modular network topology. The identification of network modules is fundamental, as they parse the brain into coherent sub-systems and allow for both functional integration and segregation among different brain areas. In this work we examined the brain's modular organization by developing an ensemble-based multilayer network approach, allowing us to link changes of structural connectivity patterns to development and aging. We show that modular structure exhibits both linear and nonlinear age-related trends. In the early and late lifespan, communities are more modular, and we track the origins of this high modularity to two different substrates in brain connectivity, linked to the number and the weights of the intra-clusters edges. We also demonstrate that aging leads to a progressive and increasing reconfiguration of modules and a redistribution across hemispheres. Finally, we identify those brain regions that most contribute to network reconfiguration and those that remain more stable across the lifespan
