Phylogenetic analysis of the evolution of lactose digestion in adults
In most of the world's population the ability to digest lactose declines sharply after infancy, High lactose digestion capacity in adults is common only in populations of European and circum-Mediterranean origin and is thought to be an evolutionary adaptation to millennia of drinking milk from domestic livestock, Milk can also be consumed in a processed form, such as cheese or soured milk, which has a reduced lactose content, Two other selective pressures for drinking fresh milk with a high lactose content have been proposed: promotion of calcium uptake in high-latitude populations prone to vitamin-D deficiency and maintainance of water and electrolytes in the body in highly arid environments, These three hypotheses are all supported by the geographic distribution of high lactose digestion capacity in adults. However, the relationships between environmental variables and adult lactose digestion capacity are highly confounded by the shared ancestry of many populations whose lactose digestion capacity has been tested, The three hypotheses for the evolution of high adult lactose digestion capacity are tested here using a comparative method of analysis that takes the problem of phylogenetic confounding into account, This analysis supports the hypothesis that high adult lactose digestion capacity is an adaptation to dairying but does not support the hypotheses that lactose digestion capacity is additionally selected for either at high latitudes or in highly arid environments. Furthermore, methods using maximum likelihood are used to show that the evolution of milking preceded the evolution of high lactose digestion
Power and influence in Human Resource Development: teaching the politics of HRD on a professional programme
Addressing organisation politics is problematic in all parts of the management curriculum. It alludes to the dark side of organisational life and requires engagement with contentious issues of power and interest. Yet, at the same time, it potentially provides a critical perspective or window through which a richer understanding of management can be achieved. Set in this context it provides a challenge for curriculum and associated professional development. This paper reports upon a research based teaching and learning initiative undertaken in the context of one branch of management, human resource development, and considers its application for other professions. The initiative sought to raise the profile of the politics of HRD within the curriculum. The paper discusses the research undertaken to generate teaching material and how we have subsequently deployed this research within a process of curriculum development. Outcomes are discussed at two levels. First, conventionally, in terms of our use, for example, of a number of depth case studies within the curriculum. Secondly, in terms of the impact of the initiative upon our own self development and professional practice. It is in respect of the latter where we lay claim to more 'benefits'; though questions are raised about the ease with which such benefits may be transferred into curriculum and professional development in higher education management teaching more generally
The practice of HRD in the voluntary sector: towards an understanding of impact
This paper addresses the role of learning in assisting voluntary sector organisations achieve their organisational objectives. Specifically it seeks to develop a platform from which to position necessary research in order to understand the link between how learning is organised, managed and delivered within voluntary sector organisations and its impact upon performance. The paper is thus a step towards a more robust theoretical and evidential understanding of a relatively under-researched domain of HRD practice
Teaching the Politics of HRD: problems and possibilities
Problems and possibilities. The âPolitics of HRDâ presents challenges to any teacher of HRD. Yet at the same time it potentially provides a perspective or window through which a rich understanding of HRD can be achieved. Appropriately positioned within current thinking about teaching critical HRD this paper discusses one initiative to address the challenge through the research and development of a series of focused case studies. Progress and âfindingsâ to date are illustrated and discussed. Alongside the generation of rich and distinctive material we note our own self-development through the project in terms of our relationship with Critical HRD. Whilst outcomes appear to offer the potential for innovative practice interesting questions remain; most notably concerning the âconnectionâ between the sorts of material we have generated and ourselves in the position of teacher/tutor
From bridewealth to dowry? A Bayesian estimation of ancestral states of marriage transfers in Indo-European groups
Significant amounts of wealth have been exchanged as part of marriage settlements throughout history. Although various models have been proposed for interpreting these practices, their development over time has not been investigated systematically. In this paper we use a Bayesian MCMC phylogenetic comparative approach to reconstruct the evolution of two forms of wealth transfers at marriage, dowry and bridewealth, for 51 Indo-European cultural groups. Results indicate that dowry is more likely to have been the ancestral practice, and that a minimum of four changes to bridewealth is necessary to explain the observed distribution of the two states across the cultural groups
Slicing of silicon into sheet material. Silicon sheet growth development for the large area silicon sheet task of the low cost silicon solar array project
Fabrication of a prototype large capacity multiple blade slurry saw is considered. Design of the bladehead which will tension up to 1000 blades, and cut a 45 cm long silicon ingot as large as 12 cm in diameter is given. The large blade tensioning force of 270,000 kg is applied through two bolts acting on a pair of scissor toggles, significantly reducing operator set-up time. Tests with an upside-down cutting technique resulted in 100% wafering yields and the highest wafer accuracy yet experienced with MS slicing. Variations in oil and abrasives resulted only in degraded slicing results. A technique of continuous abrasive slurry separation to remove silicon debris is described
Entrepreneurial intentions among students: towards a re-focused research agenda
Purpose â This paper aims to address the need for a re-focused research agenda in relation to graduate entrepreneurship. An important theme for some years has been the effort to monitor attitudes and intentions of students towards starting up their own businesses. It is timely, however, to raise some questions about both the impact of this research and likewise the general approach it has taken in understanding the phenomenon of graduate entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach â The paper draws on a large data set (over 8,000 students) from one UK region. Specifically, it presents data from the 2007/2008 Entrepreneurial Intentions (EI) survey within the Yorkshire and Humberside region and reflects back over previous iterations of this research. Findings â The paper identifies three key outcomes. First, it establishes that across all years of the survey a substantial minority of students consistently hold relatively strong start-up intentions. Second, the paper highlights that, despite considerable efforts to increase the numbers moving to start-up, little impact is discernible. Third, the paper suggests that, although the EI survey is useful as a stock-taking exercise, it fails to address critical questions around the impact of higher education on entrepreneurship and the transition from entrepreneurial intent to the act of venture creation. Originality/value â The paper provides an important positioning perspective on the relationship between higher education and graduate entrepreneurship. While highlighting the importance of the EI research, the paper establishes the need for a re-focused research agenda; one that is conceptually robust and with a focus on the student journey from higher education to graduate entrepreneur
