Determinants of Physical Activity and Low-Fat Diet Among Low Income African American and Hispanic Middle School Students
African Americans, Hispanics, and those with low income experience disproportionate health problems that can be prevented by physical activity and a lower fat diet. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, antecedents of diet and exercise within the Health Promotion/Transtheoretical Model were examined among low-income African American and Hispanic seventh-grade students (n = 127). Total support was associated with higher physical activity for girls. African Americans perceived greater social support for activity than Hispanics. Family models and support for physical activity and low-fat diet were greater as family income increased. However, higher family role models and lower dietary fat were found among the lowest income Hispanic students\u27 residing ZIP code with a higher concentration of Hispanics and greater availability of Hispanic foods and culture. A school-based approach may be useful to build peer support for physical activity and lower dietary fat. Parish nurse or clinic settings may be most appropriate for building family role models and support. Living in a neighborhood with traditional Hispanic culture and foods appears to have ameliorated the harmful effects of lower income, although further study with larger samples followed over time is needed
Metabolic syndrome in overweight children from the city of Botucatu - SĂŁo Paulo State - Brazil: agreement among six diagnostic criteria
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The metabolic syndrome has been described in children; however, a standard criterion has not been established for its diagnosis. Also, few studies have been conducted to specifically observe the possible existence of agreement among the existing diagnostic criteria. The purpose of the study is to evaluate agreement concerning prevalence rates of the metabolic syndrome diagnosed by six different criteria in overweight schoolchildren in the city of Botucatu - SP -Brazil.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a cross-sectional study on 128 overweight schoolchildren. Clinical examination included anthropometry, pubertal staging evaluation, and blood pressure. Triacylglycerol, glycemia, HDL-cholesterol, insulin levels, and HOMA-IR were determined. The Kappa index, the Mann-Whitney test and the chi-square test were used for statistical analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome varied from 10 to 16.5% according to different diagnostic criteria. Results were similar for boys and girls and pubertal stage. Great agreement was observed among the six different diagnostic criteria for the metabolic syndrome.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Different diagnostic criteria, when adopted for subjects with similar demographic characteristics, generate similar and compatible prevalence. Results suggest that it is possible to adopt any of the analyzed criteria, and the choice should be according to the components available for each situation.</p
Studying Adolescent Male Sexuality: Where Are We?
This article critically reviews the literature about adolescent males’ sexuality in order to describe the state of the science and to identify promising concepts and research designs that have the potential to guide the next generation of research. A critique was conducted on 94 peer-reviewed studies of sexual behaviors that included a sample of adolescent males; 11 scholarly texts and 2 dissertations. Most studies lacked a theoretical foundation and had cross-sectional designs. For those studies with a theoretical base, 3 perspectives were most often used to guide research: cognitive, biological, or social-environmental. Studies frequently relied on older adolescents or young adult males to report behaviors during early adolescence. Male-only samples were infrequent. Findings include (a) the measurement of sexual activity is frequently limited to coitus and does not explore other forms of “sex”; (b) cognitive factors have been limited to knowledge, attitudes, and intent; (c) little is known about younger males based on their own self-reports; (d) little is known about the normative sexuality development of gay adolescent males; and (e) longitudinal studies did not take into account the complexities of biological, social, and emotional development in interaction with other influences. Research on adolescent sexuality generally is about sexual activity, with little research that includes cognitive competency or young males’ sense of self as a sexual being. The purpose of the paper is to critically review the literature about male sexuality in order to describe the state of the science as well as to identify potential directions to guide the next generation of adolescent male sexual being research.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45299/1/10964_2005_Article_5762.pd

Orientation-dependent critical currents in Y sub 1 Ba sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 7-x epitaxial thin films: Evidence for intrinsic flux pinning
For YBCO epitaxial thin films the basal plane transport critical current density J{sub c}, flowing perpendicular to an applied magnetic field H, depends sensitively on the orientation of the crystal with respect to H. In particular, J{sub c} is sharply peaked and greatly enhanced when H is precisely parallel to the copper-oxygen planes. Experiments on a series of epitaxial monolithic and superconductor-insulator multilayer thin films provide clear evidence that the enhancement is a bulk, rather than surface or thin sample, phenomenon. Measurements of the orientation dependence are presented and compared with a model of intrinsic flux pinning'' by the layered crystal structure

Capattery double layer capacitor life performance
Double layer capacitors (DLCs) have received increased use in computer memory backup applications for consumer products during the past ten years. Their extraordinarily high capacitance density along with their maintenance-free operation makes them particularly suited for these products. These same features also make DLCs very attractive in military type applications. Unfortunately, lifetime performance data has not been reported in the literature for any DLC component. Our objective in this study was to investigate the effects that voltage and temperature have on the properties and performance of single and series-connected DLCs as a function of time. Evans model RE110474, 0.47-farad, 11.0-volt Capatteries were evaluated. These components have a tantalum package, use welded construction, and contain a glass-to-metal seal, all incorporated to circumvent the typical DLC failure modes of electrolyte loss and container corrosion. A five-level, two-factor Central Composite Design'' was used in the study. Single and series-connected Capatteries rated at 85{degree}C, 11.0-volts operation were subjected to test temperatures between 25 and 95{degree}C, and voltages between 0 and 12.9 volts (9 test conditions). Measured responses included capacitance, equivalent series resistance, and discharge time. Data were analyzed using a regression analysis to obtain response functions relating DLC properties to their voltage, temperature, and test time history. These results are described and should aid system and component engineers in using DLCs in critical applications
