China's new corporate rescue laws: perspectives and principles
This article considers the new corporate insolvency legislation that came into force in China in June 2007. This law is part of a remarkable transformation in the Chinese economy in recent years. Significant numbers of ailing state owned enterprises have been reformed and subjected to hard budgetary constraints, while the private sector has grown dramatically. Market forces play a greater role, whereas the economy was previously tightly controlled by the state. These changes, together with pressures arising from external bodies such as the European Union, led to an urgent need for the adoption of the revised insolvency law, which has at its heart corporate rescue procedures. This article considers the content of this new law, the background to it, and also assesses the prospects for its operation. In particular attention is paid to the level of scope for state interference in the operation of the law
Interfacial Structural Changes and Singularities in Non-Planar Geometries
We consider phase coexistence and criticality in a thin-film Ising magnet
with opposing surface fields and non-planar (corrugated) walls. We show that
the loss of translational invariance has a strong and unexpected non-linear
influence on the interface structure and phase diagram. We identify 4
non-thermodynamic singularities where there is a qualitative change in the
interface shape. In addition, we establish that at the finite-size critical
point, the singularity in the interface shape is characterized by two distint
critical exponents in contrast to the planar case (which is characterised by
one). Similar effects should be observed for prewetting at a corrugated
substrate. Analogy is made with the behaviour of a non-linear forced oscillator
showing chaotic dynamics.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Correlation function algebra for inhomogeneous fluids
We consider variational (density functional) models of fluids confined in
parallel-plate geometries (with walls situated in the planes z=0 and z=L
respectively) and focus on the structure of the pair correlation function
G(r_1,r_2). We show that for local variational models there exist two
non-trivial identities relating both the transverse Fourier transform G(z_\mu,
z_\nu;q) and the zeroth moment G_0(z_\mu,z_\nu) at different positions z_1, z_2
and z_3. These relations form an algebra which severely restricts the possible
form of the function G_0(z_\mu,z_\nu). For the common situations in which the
equilibrium one-body (magnetization/number density) profile m_0(z) exhibits an
odd or even reflection symmetry in the z=L/2 plane the algebra simplifies
considerably and is used to relate the correlation function to the finite-size
excess free-energy \gamma(L). We rederive non-trivial scaling expressions for
the finite-size contribution to the free-energy at bulk criticality and for
systems where large scale interfacial fluctuations are present. Extensions to

Divergence of AMP Deaminase in the Ice Worm Mesenchytraeus solifugus (Annelida, Clitellata, Enchytraeidae)
Glacier ice worms, Mesenchytraeus solifugus and related species, are the largest glacially obligate metazoans. As one component of cold temperature adaptation, ice worms maintain atypically high energy levels in an apparent mechanism to offset cold temperature-induced lethargy and death. To explore this observation at a mechanistic level, we considered the putative contribution of 5′ adenosine monophosphate deaminase (AMPD), a key regulator of energy metabolism in eukaryotes. We cloned cDNAs encoding ice worm AMPD, generating a fragment encoding 543 amino acids that included a short N-terminal region and complete C-terminal catalytic domain. The predicted ice worm AMPD amino acid sequence displayed conservation with homologues from other mesophilic eukaryotes with notable exceptions. In particular, an ice worm-specific K188E substitution proximal to the AMP binding site likely alters the architecture of the active site and negatively affects the enzyme's activity. Growth studies on Si0.8Ge0.2 channel two-dimensional hole gases
We report a study of the influences of MBE conditions on the low-temperature mobilities of Si/Si0.8Ge0.2 2DHG structures. A significant dependence of 2DHG mobility on growth temperature is observed with the maximum mobility of 3640 cm2 V−1 s−1 at 5.4 K being achieved at the relatively high-growth temperature of 640 °C. This dependence is associated with a reduction in interface charge density. Studies on lower mobility samples show that Cu contamination can be reduced both by growth interruptions and by modifications to the Ge source; this reduction produces improvements in the low-temperature mobilities. We suggest that interface charge deriving from residual metal contamination is currently limiting the 4-K mobility
The effect of lockdown on intentional and nonintentional injury during the COVID-19 pandemic in Cape Town, South Africa: A preliminary report
Background. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, lockdown restrictions and a ban on alcohol sales were introduced in South Africa. Objectives. To investigate the impact of lockdown measures on the number of patients who visited a tertiary urban trauma centre. Methods. The period of investigation was from 1 February to 30 June 2020 and was segmented into three intervals: pre-lockdown (February and March 2020), hard lockdown (April and May 2020) and immediately post lockdown (June 2020). The electronic HECTIS health record registry was interrogated for the total number of patients that were seen per month. These were further categorised according to mechanism of injury (stab, gunshot, blunt assault and road traffic injuries). Penetrating (stab and gunshot) and blunt assault victims were collectively grouped as violent trauma. Results. The mean total number of patients seen decreased by 53% during the hard lockdown period. There was a moderate reduction (15%) in patients with gunshot injuries seen during the hard lockdown phase, but there was an 80% increase in the post-lockdown period. The proportion of patients injured in road traffic collisions pre lockdown, hard lockdown and immediate post lockdown was 16.4%, 8.9% and 11.1%, respectively. Patients injured in road traffic collisions decreased by 74% during the hard lockdown period and maintained a reduction of 32% during the immediate post-lockdown period. The mean total number of patients who visited the trauma unit returned to pre-lockdown levels in June. Conclusions. There was an overall trend of reduced number of patients who visited the trauma unit during the hard lockdown period; however, these numbers returned to pre-lockdown levels during the immediate post-lockdown period. The number of road traffic injury admissions remained reduced during all three phases of lockdown, while the number of gunshot victims increased substantially during the post-lockdown period
