Nuclear structure studies via neutron interactions. Progress report, 1 July 1991--30 June 1992
Research performed consisted of publication of a theoretical paper for the n + {sup 40}Ar system; submission of a paper on the R-matrix analysis of the neutron total cross section data for the n + {sup 208}Pb system, up to an energy of 1.7 MeV; extension of the analysis of neutron scattering and total cross section data for n + {sup 54}Fe up to an energy of 1 MeV, with J{sup {pi}} values confirmed in most cases by differential scattering data; porting of most of the analysis programs used in the research program to the RISC/6000 workstation
Direct neutron capture of 48Ca at kT = 52 keV
The neutron capture cross section of 48Ca was measured relative to the known
gold cross section at kT = 52 keV using the fast cyclic activation technique.
The experiment was performed at the Van-de-Graaff accelerator, Universitaet
Tuebingen. The new experimental result is in good agreement with a calculation
using the direct capture model. The 1/v behaviour of the capture cross section
at thermonuclear energies is confirmed, and the adopted reaction rate which is
based on several previous experimental investigations remains unchanged.Comment: 9 pages (uses Revtex), 2 postscript figures, accepted for publication

Calibrating Water Depths of Ordovician Communities: Lithological and Ecological Controls on Depositional Gradients in Upper Ordovician Strata of Southern Ohio and North-Central Kentucky, USA
Limestone and shale facies of the Upper Ordovician Grant Lake Formation (Katian: Cincinnatian, Maysvillian) are well
exposed in the Cincinnati Arch region of southern Ohio and north-central Kentucky, USA. These rocks record a gradual change in lithofacies and biofacies along a gently northward-sloping ramp. This gradient spans very shallow, olive-gray, platy, laminated dolostones with sparse ostracodes in the south to offshore, nodular, phosphatic, brachiopod-rich limestones and marls in the north. This study uses facies analysis in outcrop to determine paleoenvironmental parameters, particularly those related to water depth (e.g., position of the photic zone and shoreline, relative degree of environmental energy). Within a tightly correlated stratigraphic interval (the Mount Auburn and Straight Creek members of the Grant Lake Formation and the Terrill Member of the Ashlock
Formation), we document the occurrence of paleoenvironmental indicators, including desiccation cracks and light-depth indicators, such as red and green algal fossils and oncolites. This permitted recognition of a ramp with an average gradient of 10.20 cm water depth per horizontal kilometer. Thus, shallow subtidal (.lagoonal.) deposits in the upramp portion fall within the 1.5.6 m depth range, cross-bedded grainstones representing shoal-type environments fall within the 6.18 m depth range and subtidal, shell-rich deposits in the downramp portion fall within the 20.30 m depth range. These estimates match interpretations of depth independently derived from faunal and sedimentologic evidence that previously suggested a gentle ramp gradient and contribute to ongoing and future high-resolution paleontologic and stratigraphic studies of the Cincinnati Arch region
Relapses of Plasmodium vivax infection usually result from activation of heterologous hypnozoites.
BACKGROUND: Relapses originating from hypnozoites are characteristic of Plasmodium vivax infections. Thus, reappearance of parasitemia after treatment can result from relapse, recrudescence, or reinfection. It has been assumed that parasites causing relapse would be a subset of the parasites that caused the primary infection. METHODS: Paired samples were collected before initiation of antimalarial treatment and at recurrence of parasitemia from 149 patients with vivax malaria in Thailand (n=36), where reinfection could be excluded, and during field studies in Myanmar (n=75) and India (n=38). RESULTS: Combined genetic data from 2 genotyping approaches showed that novel P. vivax populations were present in the majority of patients with recurrent infection (107 [72%] of 149 patients overall [78% of patients in Thailand, 75% of patients in Myanmar {Burma}, and 63% of patients in India]). In 61% of the Thai and Burmese patients and in 55% of the Indian patients, the recurrent infections contained none of the parasite genotypes that caused the acute infection. CONCLUSIONS: The P. vivax populations emerging from hypnozoites commonly differ from the populations that caused the acute episode. Activation of heterologous hypnozoite populations is the most common cause of first relapse in patients with vivax malaria
Hypersensitivity and chaos signatures in the quantum baker's maps
Classical chaotic systems are distinguished by their sensitive dependence on
initial conditions. The absence of this property in quantum systems has lead to
a number of proposals for perturbation-based characterizations of quantum
chaos, including linear growth of entropy, exponential decay of fidelity, and
hypersensitivity to perturbation. All of these accurately predict chaos in the
classical limit, but it is not clear that they behave the same far from the
classical realm. We investigate the dynamics of a family of quantizations of
the baker's map, which range from a highly entangling unitary transformation to
an essentially trivial shift map. Linear entropy growth and fidelity decay are
exhibited by this entire family of maps, but hypersensitivity distinguishes
between the simple dynamics of the trivial shift map and the more complicated
dynamics of the other quantizations. This conclusion is supported by an
analytical argument for short times and numerical evidence at later times.Comment: 32 pages, 6 figure
Direct Neutron Capture for Magic-Shell Nuclei
In neutron capture for magic--shell nuclei the direct reaction mechanism can
be important and may even dominate. As an example we investigated the reaction
Ca(n,Ca for projectile energies below 250\,keV in a direct
capture model using the folding procedure for optical and bound state
potentials. The obtained theoretical cross sections are in agreement with the
experimental data showing the dominance of the direct reaction mechanism in
this case. The above method was also used to calculate the cross section for

Antibiotic resistant Shigella is a major cause of diarrhoea in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea
Introduction: Diarrhoea remains a major cause of illness in Papua New Guinea (PNG); however, little is known about its aetiology. As a result of the cholera outbreak that spread throughout PNG in 2009-2011, we conducted diarrhoeal surveillance in Eastern Highlands Province.
Methodology: Following informed consent and a brief questionnaire, participants provided a stool sample or duplicate rectal swabs. Samples were tested for common bacterial pathogens Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Vibrio spp., Campylobacter spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica using established culture methods. Enteric parasites were detected using microscopy.
Results: A total of 216 participants were enrolled; where age was recorded, 42% were under 5 years of age, 6.7% were 5 to 17 years of age and 51.3% ≥18 years of age. One or more pathogens were detected in 68 (31.5%) participants, with Shigella (primarily S. flexneri) being the most commonly isolated (47 of 216 participants). Enteric parasites were detected in 23 of the 216 participants, occurring as a co-infection with another pathogen in 12 of 23 cases. No Vibrio cholerae was detected. Shigella isolates were commonly resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, co-trimoxazole and chloramphenicol.
Conclusions: Shigellae, specifically S. flexneri, are important pathogens in the highlands of PNG. While most studies in low-income settings focus on childhood aetiology, we have demonstrated the importance of Shigella in both children and adults. Enteric parasites remain present and presumably contribute to the burden of gastrointestinal illness. While improvements in sanitation and hygiene would help lower the burden of all aetiologies of infectious diarrhoea, additional control strategies targeting Shigella may also be warranted
Measurement of neutron capture on Ca at thermal and thermonuclear energies
At the Karlsruhe pulsed 3.75\,MV Van de Graaff accelerator the thermonuclear
Ca(n,)Ca(8.72\,min) cross section was measured by the
fast cyclic activation technique via the 3084.5\,keV -ray line of the
Ca-decay. Samples of CaCO enriched in Ca by 77.87\,\% were
irradiated between two gold foils which served as capture standards. The
capture cross-section was measured at the neutron energies 25, 151, 176, and
218\,keV, respectively. Additionally, the thermal capture cross-section was
measured at the reactor BR1 in Mol, Belgium, via the prompt and decay
-ray lines using the same target material. The
Ca(n,)Ca cross-section in the thermonuclear and thermal
energy range has been calculated using the direct-capture model combined with
folding potentials. The potential strengths are adjusted to the scattering
length and the binding energies of the final states in Ca. The small
coherent elastic cross section of Ca+n is explained through the nuclear
Ramsauer effect. Spectroscopic factors of Ca have been extracted from
the thermal capture cross-section with better accuracy than from a recent (d,p)
experiment. Within the uncertainties both results are in agreement. The
non-resonant thermal and thermonuclear experimental data for this reaction can
be reproduced using the direct-capture model. A possible interference with a
resonant contribution is discussed. The neutron spectroscopic factors of
Ca determined from shell-model calculations are compared with the values
extracted from the experimental cross sections for Ca(d,p)Ca and

Local Realistic Model for the Dynamics of Bulk-Ensemble NMR Information Processing
We construct a local realistic hidden-variable model that describes the
states and dynamics of bulk-ensemble NMR information processing up to about 12
nuclear spins. The existence of such a model rules out violation of any Bell
inequality, temporal or otherwise, in present high-temperature, liquid-state
NMR experiments. The model does not provide an efficient description in that
the number of hidden variables grows exponentially with the number of nuclear
