Extracting predictive models from marked-p free-text documents at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London

In this paper we explore the combination of text-mining, un-supervised and supervised learning to extract predictive models from a corpus of digitised historical floras. These documents deal with the nomenclature, geographical distribution, ecology and comparative morphology of the species of a region. Here we exploit the fact that portions of text in the floras are marked up as different types of trait and habitat. We infer models from these different texts that can predict different habitat-types based upon the traits of plant species. We also integrate plant taxonomy data in order to assist in the validation of our models. We have shown that by clustering text describing the habitat of different floras we can identify a number of important and distinct habitats that are associated with particular families of species along with statistical significance scores. We have also shown that by using these discovered habitat-types as labels for supervised learning we can predict them based upon a subset of traits, identified using wrapper feature selection

Mass Predictions for Pseudoscalar JPC=0+J^{PC}=0^{-+} Charmonium and Bottomonium Hybrids in QCD Sum-Rules

Masses of the pseudoscalar (JPC=0+)(J^{PC}=0^{-+}) charmonium and bottomonium hybrids are determined using QCD Laplace sum-rules. The effects of the dimension-six gluon condensate are included in our analysis and result in a stable sum-rule analysis, whereas previous studies of these states were unable to optimize mass predictions. The pseudoscalar charmonium hybrid is predicted to have a mass of approximately 3.8 GeV and the corresponding bottomonium prediction is 10.6 GeV. Calculating the full correlation function, rather than only the imaginary part, is shown to be necessary for accurate formulation of the sum-rules. The charmonium hybrid mass prediction is discussed within the context of the X Y Z resonances.Comment: 10 pages, 7 embedded figures. Analysis extended and refined in v

An analysis of the protagonist´s face work in " As good as it gets": from an obnoxious hermit to a sociable being

Brown Dwarfs in the Pleiades Cluster. III. A deep IZ survey

We present the results of a deep CCD-based IZ photometric survey of a ~1 sq. deg area in the central region of the Pleiades Galactic open cluster. The magnitude coverage of our survey (from I~17.5 down to 22) allows us to detect substellar candidates with masses between 0.075 and 0.03 Msol. Details of the photometric reduction and selection criteria are given. Finder charts prepared from the I-band images are provided.Comment: 11 pages with 8 figures, 4 of them are finder charts given in gif format. Accepted for publication in A&AS. Wnt Signaling Determines Body Axis Polarity In Regenerating Hydra Tissue Fragments

How an animal establishes its body axis is a fundamental question in developmental biology. The freshwater cnidarian Hydra is an attractive model for studying axis formation because it is radially symmetric, with a single oral-aboral axis. It was recently proposed that the orientation of the new body axis in a regenerating Hydra polyp is determined by the oral-aboral orientation of the actin-myosin contractile processes (myonemes) in the animal’s outer epithelial layer. However, it remained unclear how the oral-aboral polarity of the body axis would be defined. As Wnt signaling is known to control axis polarity in Hydra and bilaterians, we hypothesized that it plays a role in axis formation during regeneration of Hydra tissue pieces. We tested this hypothesis using pharmacological perturbations and novel grafting experiments to set Wnt signaling and myoneme orientation perpendicular to each other to determine which controls axis formation. Our results demonstrate that Wnt signaling is the dominant encoder of axis orientation and polarity, in line with its conserved role in axial patterning

Other Challenges in the Development of the Orbiter Environmental Control Hardware

Development of the Space Shuttle orbiter environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) included the identification and resolution of several interesting problems in several systems. Some of these problems occurred late in the program, including the flight phase. Problems and solutions related to the ammonia boiler system (ABS), smoke detector, water/hydrogen separator, and waste collector system (WCS) are addressed
