Annular Pancreatitis and Gastric Cancer
Annular pancreas can present in adult life, usually when inflammation of the pancreatic ring causes
duodenal stenosis. Although peptic ulcer is often associated with annular pancreas, an association with
gastric carcinoma has not been previously described. Here we report a patient with annular pancreas,
chronic alcoholic pancreatitis and gastric carcinoma, who was successfully treated by radical proximal
pancreatoduodenectomy
Choledochal Cyst and Chronic Pancreatitis — Treated by Proximal Pancreatectomy
A 32-year-old woman with a choledochal cyst (Todani type I) developed recurrent acute pancreatitis
leading to calcific chronic pancreatitis. She had previously been treated with two cyst drainage
procedures and subtotal cyst excision. This association between choledochal cyst and chronic pancreatitis
has not been previously reported. Severe continuing symptoms led to pylorus-preserving proximal
pancreatoduodenectomy, which was undertaken to prevent future carcinoma in the cyst remnant and
progression of the chronic pancreatiti
Variational quantum Monte Carlo calculations for solid surfaces
Quantum Monte Carlo methods have proven to predict atomic and bulk properties
of light and non-light elements with high accuracy. Here we report on the first
variational quantum Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations for solid surfaces. Taking
the boundary condition for the simulation from a finite layer geometry, the
Hamiltonian, including a nonlocal pseudopotential, is cast in a layer resolved
form and evaluated with a two-dimensional Ewald summation technique. The exact
cancellation of all Jellium contributions to the Hamiltonian is ensured. The
many-body trial wave function consists of a Slater determinant with
parameterized localized orbitals and a Jastrow factor with a common two-body
term plus a new confinement term representing further variational freedom to
take into account the existence of the surface. We present results for the
ideal (110) surface of Galliumarsenide for different system sizes. With the
optimized trial wave function, we determine some properties related to a solid
surface to illustrate that VMC techniques provide standard results under full
inclusion of many-body effects at solid surfaces.Comment: 9 pages with 2 figures (eps) included, Latex 2.09, uses REVTEX style,

Towards a killer app for the Semantic Web
Killer apps are highly transformative technologies that create new markets and widespread patterns of behaviour. IT generally, and the Web in particular, has benefited from killer apps to create new networks of users and increase its value. The Semantic Web community on the other hand is still awaiting a killer app that proves the superiority of its technologies. There are certain features that distinguish killer apps from other ordinary applications. This paper examines those features in the context of the Semantic Web, in the hope that a better understanding of the characteristics of killer apps might encourage their consideration when developing Semantic Web applications
Chronic Pancreatitis and Neoplasia: Correlation or Coincidence
Any link between pancreatic carcinoma and chronic pancreatitis could reflect the malignant potential of a chronic inflammatory process. Four patients with ductal adenocarcinomas had a long history of pancreatic pain (median duration 5 years) and showed clearcut evidence of chronic pancreatitis “downstream” of the tumour. Four were alcoholics and two heavy smokers. These four cases arose within a surgical series of approximately 250 patients with chronic pancreatitis, giving an incidence of 1.6 per cent. The incidence and anatomical distribution of carcinoma and chronic pancreatitis could possibly be consistent with a casual relationship
