Automatic Underwater LED Light and Fish Behavior Observations
A focused telephonic nursing intervention delivers improved adherence to A1c testing
Compliance with hemoglobin A1c (A1c) testing is suboptimal despite the clear national recommendations and guidelines established for care of patients with diabetes. Recent studies have demonstrated a relationship between participation in a diabetes disease management (DM) program and improved adherence to A1c testing. A focused intervention study was initiated to investigate the ability of a DM program to drive improvement in A1c testing. A cohort of 36,327 members experienced a statistically significant increase (29%) in A1c testing while participating in the 6-month focused intervention. This finding demonstrated that a focused DM intervention is able to deliver improvement in a clinical process metric critical for managing patients with diabetes, thereby reducing their risk of disease exacerbation
PENGARUH PENGUJIAN KEKERASAN DAN PENGUJIAN TEKAN TERHADAP KARAKTERISTIK GAYA TUMBUKAN PADA CANGKANG KENARI (CANARIUM INDICUM L)
Kenari (Canarium indicum L) belongs to the Burseraceae family and is one of the endemic fruits in Indonesia, especially Maluku. Walnuts have a tough shell that encloses the flesh, to get the flesh without damaging it careful effort is needed. This study investigated the strength of walnut shells through mechanical testing to determine the amount of impact force needed to break the walnut shell. The mechanical test carried out is a compression test and impact test. The values of these tests assist in determining, measuring, and analyzing the minimum and maximum force loads required to crack a walnut shell. Tests were carried out on walnut shells from 6 different villages on Ambon Island and Saparua Island. The impact test where the highest impact absorption energy value was found in walnut shells from Booi Village, namely 23.18 J/mm2, and the lowest in walnut shells from Morela Village, 22.40 J/mm2. In the compression test where the lowest value was found in walnut shells from Morela village with a value of 3.61 MPa while the highest value was found in walnut shells from Booi village, namely 5.24 MPa. Whereas the minimum compressive force is 16.22 kgf/mm2 and the maximum compressive force is 17.61 kgf/mm2
Effects of the incredible years parenting program on children’s interpersonal conflict: An integrative data analysis.
Behavioral parenting programs, such as Incredible Years (IY), reduce conduct problems in children. However, conduct problems encompass many different behaviors, and little is known about the effects of parenting programs on specific aspects of children’s conduct problems, such as children’s relationships with others. The aim of this study was to examine, for the first time, the effects of the IY parenting program on children’s levels of conflict with their parents, siblings, and peers. We used individual participant-level data pooled across 12 randomized trials in Europe, comprising a total of 1,409 families: child aged 1–11 years (M = 5.53 years, SD = 1.56) and 61% male, 60% low-income families, and 30% from an ethnic minority. Multilevel models were used to explore the effects of IY on children’s conflict with parents, siblings, and peers. The IY program reduced children’s conflict with their parents (β = −.21), but there were no main effects of the program on conflict with siblings or peers. Moderation analyses showed that IY reduced conflict in sibling relationships for the 22% of families with the most severe sibling conflict at baseline. This suggests that high-quality behavioral parenting programs, such as IY, can effectively reduce children’s conflict within the home (i.e., with parents and siblings), especially when initial levels of sibling conflict are high, but do not have broader benefits on children’s interpersonal conflict outside of the home (i.e., with peers).publishedVersio
Recurrence of chronic venous ulcers on the basis of clinical, etiologic, anatomic, and pathophysiologic criteria and air plethysmography
AbstractIntroduction: Leg ulcers associated with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) frequently recur after healing. The risk of recurrence has not been well defined for patients in different anatomic and hemodynamic groups. We reviewed the risk of ulcer recurrence on the basis of clinical, etiologic, anatomic, and pathophysiologic criteria and hemodynamic characteristics of the affected limb as assessed with air plethysmography (APG). Methods: Ninety-nine limbs with class 6 CVI were assessed clinically and with standing duplex ultrasound scanning and APG for the definition of clinical, etiologic, anatomic, and pathophysiologic criteria. Leg ulcers were treated with high-pressure compression protocols. Surgical correction of venous abnormalities was offered to patients with appropriate conditions. After ulcer healing, the limbs were placed in compressive garments and followed at 6-month intervals for ulcer recurrence. Results: The mean patient age was 54.3 years, and 46% of the patients were female. Corrective venous surgery was performed in 37 limbs. The mean follow-up time for all 99 limbs was 28 months. The ulcer recurrence rate with life table was 37% ± 6% at 3 years and 48% ± 10% at 5 years. The patients who underwent venous surgery had a significantly lower recurrence rate (27% ± 9% at 48 months) than did those patients who had not undergone surgery (67% ± 8% at 48 months; P =.005). The patients with deep venous insufficiency (DVI; n=51) had significantly higher recurrence rates (66% ± 8% at 48 months) than did the patients without DVI (n = 48; 29% ± 9% at 48 months; P =.006). This difference was significant even after accounting for the effects of surgery (P =.03).The hazard ratio of ulcer recurrence increases by 14% for every unit increase in the venous filling index (VFI; P =.001). This remains significant even after accounting for the effects of surgery (P =.001). The combination of DVI and a VFI of more than 4 mL/s yields a risk of ulcer recurrence of 43% ± 9% at 1 year and 60% ± 10% at 2 years. Conclusion: Leg ulcers associated with CVI have a high rate of recurrence. Ulcer recurrence is significantly increased in patients with DVI and in patients who do not have venous abnormalities corrected surgically. The VFI obtained from APG is useful in the prediction of increased risk for recurrence, particularly in association with anatomic data. (J Vasc Surg 2002;35:723-8.
