On the Accuracy of Hyperspherical Harmonics Approaches to Photonuclear Reactions
Using the Lorentz Integral Transform (LIT) method we compare the results for
the triton total photodisintegration cross section obtained using the
Correlated Hyperspherical Harmonics (CHH) and the Effective Interaction
Hyperspherical Harmonics (EIHH) techniques. We show that these two approaches,
while rather different both conceptually and computationally, lead to results
which coincide within high accuracy. The calculations which include two- and
three-body forces are of the same high quality in both cases. We also discuss
the comparison of the two approaches in terms of computational efficiency.
These results are of major importance in view of applications to the much
debated case of the four-nucleon photoabsorption.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
The nuclear contacts and short range correlations in nuclei
Atomic nuclei are complex strongly interacting systems and their exact
theoretical description is a long-standing challenge. An approximate
description of nuclei can be achieved by separating its short and long range
structure. This separation of scales stands at the heart of the nuclear shell
model and effective field theories that describe the long-range structure of
the nucleus using a mean- field approximation. We present here an effective
description of the complementary short-range structure using contact terms and
stylized two-body asymptotic wave functions. The possibility to extract the
nuclear contacts from experimental data is presented. Regions in the two-body
momentum distribution dominated by high-momentum, close-proximity, nucleon
pairs are identified and compared to experimental data. The amount of
short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs is determined and compared to
measurements. Non-combinatorial isospin symmetry for SRC pairs is identified.
The obtained one-body momentum distributions indicate dominance of SRC pairs
above the nuclear Fermi-momentum.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters. 6 pages, 2 figure
Are there compact heavy four-quark bound states?
We present an exact method to study four-quark systems based on the
hyperspherical harmonics formalism. We apply it to several physical systems of
interest containing two heavy and two light quarks using different quark-quark
potentials. Our conclusions mark the boundaries for the possible existence of
compact, non-molecular, four-quark bound states. While states
may be stable in nature, the stability of states would imply
the existence of quark correlations not taken into account by simple quark
dynamical modelsComment: 10 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
The nuclear electric polarizability of 6He
We present an estimate of the nuclear electric polarizability of the 6He halo
nucleus based on six-body microscopic calculations. Wave functions are obtained
from semi-realistic two-body interactions using the hyperspherical harmonics
expansion method. The polarizability is calculated as a sum rule of the dipole
response function using the Lanczos algorithm and also by integrating the
photo-absorption cross section calculated via the Lorentz integral transform
method. We obtain alpha_E=1.00(14) fm^3, which is much smaller than the
published value 1.99(40) fm^3 extracted from experimental data. This points
towards a potential disagreement between microscopic theories and experimental
observations.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, minor changes, added error analysi
Total Photoabsorption Cross Sections of A=6 Nuclei with Complete Final State Interaction
The total photoabsorption cross sections of 6He and 6Li are calculated
microscopically with full inclusion of the six-nucleon final state interaction
using semirealistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. The Lorentz Integral Transform
(LIT) method and the effective interaction approach for the hyperspherical
formalism are employed. While 6Li has a single broad giant resonance peak,
there are two well separated peaks for 6He corresponding to the breakup of the
neutron halo and the alpha core, respectively. The comparison with the few
available experimental data is discussed.Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 3 ps figure

State Dependent Effective Interaction for the Hyperspherical Formalism
The method of effective interaction, traditionally used in the framework of
an harmonic oscillator basis, is applied to the hyperspherical formalism of
few-body nuclei (A=3-6). The separation of the hyperradial part leads to a
state dependent effective potential. Undesirable features of the harmonic
oscillator approach associated with the introduction of a spurious confining
potential are avoided. It is shown that with the present method one obtains an
enormous improvement of the convergence of the hyperspherical harmonics series
in calculating ground state properties, excitation energies and transitions to
continuum states.Comment: LaTeX, 16 pages, 8 ps figure
Four-quark spectroscopy within the hyperspherical formalism
We present a generalization of the hyperspherical harmonic formalism to study
systems made of quarks and antiquarks of the same flavor. This generalization
is based on the symmetrization of the body wave function with respect to
the symmetric group using the Barnea and Novoselsky algorithm. The formalism is
applied to study four-quark systems by means of a constituent quark model
successful in the description of the two- and three-quark systems. The results
are compared to those obtained by means of variational approaches. Our analysis
shows that four-quark systems with exotic and non-exotic
quantum numbers may be bound independently of the mass of the quark.
and states become attractive only for larger mass of the quarks.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure
