Non-Thermal Production of WIMPs and the Sub-Galactic Structure of the Universe
There is increasing evidence that conventional cold dark matter (CDM) models
lead to conflicts between observations and numerical simulations of dark matter
halos on sub-galactic scales. Spergel and Steinhardt showed that if the CDM is
strongly self-interacting, then the conflicts disappear. However, the
assumption of strong self-interaction would rule out the favored candidates for
CDM, namely weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), such as the
neutralino. In this paper we propose a mechanism of non-thermal production of
WIMPs and study its implications on the power spectrum. We find that the
non-vanishing velocity of the WIMPs suppresses the power spectrum on small
scales compared to what it obtained in the conventional CDM model. Our results
show that, in this context, WIMPs as candidates for dark matter can work well

Evidence of discrete scale invariance in DLA and time-to-failure by canonical averaging
Discrete scale invariance, which corresponds to a partial breaking of the
scaling symmetry, is reflected in the existence of a hierarchy of
characteristic scales l0, c l0, c^2 l0,... where c is a preferred scaling ratio
and l0 a microscopic cut-off. Signatures of discrete scale invariance have
recently been found in a variety of systems ranging from rupture, earthquakes,
Laplacian growth phenomena, ``animals'' in percolation to financial market
crashes. We believe it to be a quite general, albeit subtle phenomenon. Indeed,
the practical problem in uncovering an underlying discrete scale invariance is
that standard ensemble averaging procedures destroy it as if it was pure noise.
This is due to the fact, that while c only depends on the underlying physics,
l0 on the contrary is realisation-dependent. Here, we adapt and implement a
novel so-called ``canonical'' averaging scheme which re-sets the l0 of
different realizations to approximately the same value. The method is based on
the determination of a realization-dependent effective critical point obtained
from, e.g., a maximum susceptibility criterion. We demonstrate the method on

Leveraging legacy codes to distributed problem solving environments: A web service approach
This paper describes techniques used to leverage high performance legacy codes as CORBA components to a distributed problem solving environment. It first briefly introduces the software architecture adopted by the environment. Then it presents a CORBA oriented wrapper generator (COWG) which can be used to automatically wrap high performance legacy codes as CORBA components. Two legacy codes have been wrapped with COWG. One is an MPI-based molecular dynamic simulation (MDS) code, the other is a finite element based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for simulating incompressible Navier-Stokes flows. Performance comparisons between runs of the MDS CORBA component and the original MDS legacy code on a cluster of workstations and on a parallel computer are also presented. Wrapped as CORBA components, these legacy codes can be reused in a distributed computing environment. The first case shows that high performance can be maintained with the wrapped MDS component. The second case shows that a Web user can submit a task to the wrapped CFD component through a Web page without knowing the exact implementation of the component. In this way, a user’s desktop computing environment can be extended to a high performance computing environment using a cluster of workstations or a parallel computer
Noninteracting Fermions in infinite dimensions
Usually, we study the statistical behaviours of noninteracting Fermions in
finite (mainly two and three) dimensions. For a fixed number of fermions, the
average energy per fermion is calculated in two and in three dimensions and it
becomes equal to 50 and 60 per cent of the fermi energy respectively. However,
in the higher dimensions this percentage increases as the dimensionality
increases and in infinite dimensions it becomes 100 per cent. This is an
intersting result, at least pedagogically. Which implies all fermions are
moving with Fermi momentum. This result is not yet discussed in standard text
books of quantum statistics. In this paper, this fact is discussed and
explained. I hope, this article will be helpful for graduate students to study

Dirac cohomology, elliptic representations and endoscopy
The first part (Sections 1-6) of this paper is a survey of some of the recent
developments in the theory of Dirac cohomology, especially the relationship of
Dirac cohomology with (g,K)-cohomology and nilpotent Lie algebra cohomology;
the second part (Sections 7-12) is devoted to understanding the unitary
elliptic representations and endoscopic transfer by using the techniques in
Dirac cohomology. A few problems and conjectures are proposed for further

Current-induced spin polarization in InGaAs and GaAs epilayers with varying doping densities
The current-induced spin polarization and momentum-dependent spin-orbit field
were measured in InGaAs epilayers with varying indium
concentrations and silicon doping densities. Samples with higher indium
concentrations and carrier concentrations and lower mobilities were found to
have larger electrical spin generation efficiencies. Furthermore,
current-induced spin polarization was detected in GaAs epilayers despite the
absence of measurable spin-orbit fields, indicating that the extrinsic
contributions to the spin polarization mechanism must be considered.
Theoretical calculations based on a model that includes extrinsic contributions
to the spin dephasing and the spin Hall effect, in addition to the intrinsic
Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, are found to qualitatively agree

On Gravitational anomaly and Hawking radiation near weakly isolated horizon
Based on the idea of the work by Wilczek and his collaborators, we consider
the gravitational anomaly near weekly isolated horizon. We find that there
exists a universal choice of tortoise coordinate for any weakly isolated
horizon. Under this coordinate, the leading behavior of a quite arbitrary
scalar field near horizon is a 2-dimensional chiral scalar field. This means we
can extend the idea of Wilczek and his collaborators to more general cases and
show the relation between gravitational anomaly and Hawking radiation is a
universal property of black hole horizon.Comment: 14 page
An agent-based architecture for managing the provision of community care - the INCA (Intelligent Community Alarm) experience
Community Care is an area that requires extensive cooperation
between independent agencies, each of which needs to meet its own objectives and targets. None are engaged solely in the delivery of community care, and need to integrate the service with their other responsibilities in a coherent and efficient manner. Agent technology provides the means by which effective cooperation can take place without compromising the essential security of both the client and the
agencies involved as the appropriate set of responses can be generated through negotiation between the parties without the need for access to the main information repositories that would be necessary with conventional collaboration models. The autonomous nature of agents also means that a variety of agents can cooperate
together with various local capabilities, so long as they conform to the relevant messaging requirements. This allows a variety of agents, with capabilities tailored to the carers to which they are attached to be developed so that cost-effective solutions can be provided.
