    Growth of free-standing wurtzite AlGaN by MBE using a highly efficient RF plasma source

    Ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV LEDs) are now being developed for various potential applications including water purification, surface decontamination, optical sensing, and solid-state lighting. The basis for this development is the successful production of AlxGa1_xN UV LEDs grown by either metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) or molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Initial studies used mainly sapphire as the substrate, but this result in a high density of defects in the epitaxial films and now bulk GaN or AlN substrates are being used to reduce this to acceptable values. However, the lattice parameters of GaN and AlN are significantly different, so any AlGaN alloy grown on either substrate will still be strained. If, however, AlGaN substrates were available, this problem could be avoided and an overall lattice match achieved. At present, the existing bulk GaN and AlN substrates are produced by MOVPE and physical vapor transport, but thick freestanding films of AlGaN are difficult to produce by either method. The authors have used plasmaassisted MBE to grow free-standing AlxGa1_xN up to 100 lm in thickness using both an HD25source from Oxford Applied Research and a novel high efficiency source from Riber to provide active nitrogen. Films were grown on 2- and 3-in. diameter sapphire and GaAs (111)B substrates with growth rates ranging from 0.2 to 3 lm/h and with AlN contents of 0% and _20%. Secondary ion mass spectrometer studies show uniform incorporation of Al, Ga, and N throughout the films, and strong room temperature photoluminescence is observed in all cases. For films grown on GaAs, the authors obtained free-standing AlGaN substrates for subsequent growth by MOVPE or MBE by removing the GaAs using a standard chemical etchant. The use of high growth rates makes this a potentially viable commercial process since AlxGa1_xN free-standing films can be grown in a single day and potentially this method could be extended to a multiwafer system with a suitable plasma source

    Feasibility of Conducting a Web-Based Survey of Patient-Reported Outcomes and Rehabilitation Progress

    Background: Web-based surveys provide an efficient means to track clinical outcomes over time without the use of clinician time for additional paperwork. Our purpose was to determine the feasibility of utilizing web-based surveys to capture rehabilitation compliance and clinical outcomes among postoperative orthopedic patients. The study hypotheses were that (a) recruitment rate would be high (\u3e 90%), (b) patients receiving surveys every two weeks would demonstrate higher response rates than patients that receive surveys every four weeks, and (c) response rates would decrease over time. Methods: The study design involved a longitudinal cohort. Surgical knee patients were recruited for study participation during their first post-operative visit (n = 59, 34.9 ± 12.0 years of age). Patients with Internet access, an available email address and willingness to participate were counter-balanced into groups to receive surveys either every two or four weeks for 24 weeks post-surgery. The surveys included questions related to rehabilitation and questions from standard patient-reported outcome measures. Outcome measures included recruitment rate (participants consented/patients approached), eligibility (participants with email/participants consented), willingness (willing participants/participants eligible), and response rate (percentage of surveys completed by willing participants). Results: Fifty-nine patients were approached regarding participation. Recruitment rate was 98% (n = 58). Eligibility was 95% (n = 55), and willingness was 91% (n = 50). The average response rate was 42% across both groups. There was no difference in the median response rates between the two-week (50%, range 0–100%) and four-week groups (33%, range 0–100%; p = 0.55). Conclusions: Although patients report being willing and able to participate in a web-based survey, response rates failed to exceed 50% in both the two-week and four-week groups. Furthermore, response rates began to decrease after the first three months postoperatively. Therefore, supplementary data collection procedures may be necessary to meet established research quality standards

    Effects of spatial dispersion in near-field radiative heat transfer between two parallel metallic surfaces

    We study the heat transfer between two parallel metallic semi-infinite media with a gap in the nanometer-scale range. We show that the near-field radiative heat flux saturates at distances smaller than the metal skin depth when using a local dielectric constant and investigate the origin of this effect. The effect of non-local corrections is analysed using the Lindhard-Mermin and Boltzmann-Mermin models. We find that local and non-local models yield the same heat fluxes for gaps larger than 2 nm. Finally, we explain the saturation observed in a recent experiment as a manifestation of the skin depth and show that heat is mainly dissipated by eddy currents in metallic bodies.Comment: Version without figures (8 figures in the complete version

    Advancing the 3Rs in regulatory ecotoxicology: A pragmatic cross-sector approach

    The ecotoxicity testing of chemicals for prospective environmental safety assessment is an area in which a high number of vertebrates are used across a variety of industry sectors. Refining, reducing, and replacing the use of animals such as fish, birds, and amphibians for this purpose addresses the ethical concerns and the increasing legislative requirements to consider alternative test methods. Members of the UK-based National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) Ecotoxicology Working Group, consisting of representatives from academia, government organizations, and industry, have worked together over the past 6 y to provide evidence bases to support and advance the application of the 3Rs in regulatory ecotoxicity testing. The group recently held a workshop to identify the areas of testing, demands, and drivers that will have an impact on the future of animal use in regulatory ecotoxicology. As a result of these discussions, we have developed a pragmatic approach to prioritize and realistically address key opportunity areas, to enable progress toward the vision of a reduced reliance on the use of animals in this area of testing. This paper summarizes the findings of this exercise and proposes a pragmatic strategy toward our key long-term goals-the incorporation of reliable alternatives to whole-organism testing into regulations and guidance, and a culture shift toward reduced reliance on vertebrate toxicity testing in routine environmental safety assessment.
