By integrating different omics levels (transcriptome, proteome and phenome), we were able to study Escherichia coli polyphosphate mutant strains (Δppk1, Δppx, and Δppk1-ppx). We have compiled here all datasets from DNA microarrys, q-proteomic (Isotope-Coded Protein Labeling, ICPL) and phenomic (Phenotype microarray) raw data we have obtained in all polyP metabolism mutants.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352340917300860?via%3Dihu

Reclamation of saline soils by leaching in the north of Egypt

Das curvas obtêm-se coeficientes de lavagem entre 0,1 e 0,42.This paper reports the result of leaching trials carried out on heavy soils of Niles' Delta - Egypt, under present drainage conditions, in order to determine the necessary parameters that allow predictions of leaching requirements as well as effectiveness of saline soils reclamation process. The study formed part of the survey for mil improvement purposes at Kafr el Sheikh Governorate, Egypt. That area has already been subject to works (surface drainage) in the sixties, but the problem is notyet overcome and high groundwater tables and salinity persist, limiting crop production. It was found out that because of the nature of those deep clay soils the amount of effective leaching water is not more than 2 mm/d, but it proved to be efficient enough (leaching efficiency found, 15%). Some typical desalination curves for these soils were also obtained, making possible a suitable planning of a land reclamation programme. Leaching coefficients between 0.1 and 0.42 were found

We assessed sexual and geographic variation in the neotropical bat Sturnira maqna (Phyllostomidae) from univariate and multivariate statistical analyses of cranial, mandibular, and body measurements of specimens representative of the geographic range of the species. Sexual dimorphism is significant, and males are larger than females. Cramial, condiloincisive, and mandibular lengths, width across lower canines, length of third and fourth metacarpals, and length of the first phalanx of the third and fifth digits were the main determinants in discriminant analysis to separate the sexes. Analysis of geographic variation in size revealed no distinct geographic pattern. Size was not correlated with mean annual temperature, mean annual precipitation, or potential evapotranspiration, nor with elevation or relative latitude. Cranial, condiloincisive, palatal, mandibular, and upper-toothrow lengths in males and cranial length, mastoid width, and length of the upper toothrow in females were the main determinants in principal component analysis. A notable phentic homogenity in size was found in specimens from the Amazon Basin and from the Amazonian slope of the Andean Cordillera in Perú. Univariate analyses however revealed that in certain measurements S. magna are somewhat smaller in Andean Perú than elsewhere

The antioxiclant action of vitamin E was analyzed, the vitamin being administered to diabetic rats, and the changes in glicemia, glycosilated hemoglobin (HbA1c) lipid peroxidation, total antioxidant, albumin and total proteins were evaluated. Four groups of rats were employed: I control II control plus vit E, III diabetics by streptozotocin, IV diabetic plus vit E. After 8 weeks of treatment with insulin (4 U/Kg weight) diabetic animals dosed with vit E improved their glicemia and their HbA1c level decreased. In diabetic and control groups that received vit E lipid peroxidation decreased 25%, compared with those who didn't receive the supplement. These findings suggest that vit E tends to improve glicemia, decrease the HbA1c levels and total antioxidants in diabetic groups.

Understanding Individual Differences for Tailored Smoking Cessation Apps

Finding ways to help people quit smoking is a high priority in health behavior change research. Recent HCI studies involving technologies using specific quitting techniques such as social support and SMS messaging to help people quit have reported some success. Early studies using computer generated print material report significant success of tailored versus non-tailored material, however, there is limited understanding on what aspects of digitally delivered quitting assistance should be tailored and how. To address this, we have conducted an empirical investigation with smokers to identify perceived importance of different types of help when quitting and the potential role of technology in providing such help. We found that people are highly individual in their approach to quitting and the kind of help they regard as relevant to their situation. Our contribution is a collection of empirically derived themes for tailoring smoking cessation apps to individual quitting needs.
