Evaluation of Spatially Targeted Strategies to Control Non-Domiciliated Triatoma dimidiata Vector of Chagas Disease
Chagas disease is one of the most important parasitic diseases in Latin America. Since the 1980's, many national and international initiatives have contributed to eliminate vectors developing inside human domiciles. Today's challenge is to control vectors that are non-adapted to the human domicile, but still able to transmit the parasite through regular short stay in the houses. Here, we assess the potential of different control strategies applied in specific spatial patterns using a mathematical model that reproduces the dynamic of dispersion of such ânon-domiciliatedâ vectors within a village of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. We show that no single strategy applied in the periphery of the village, where the insects are more abundant, provides satisfying protection to the whole village. However, combining the use of insect screens in houses at the periphery of the village (to simultaneously fight insects dispersing from the garden and the forest), and the cleaning of the peri-domicile areas of the centre of the village (where sylvatic insects are absent), would provide a cost-effective control. This type of spatially mixed strategy offers a promising way to reduce the cost associated with the repeated interventions required to control non-domiciliated vectors that permanently attempt to infest houses
MASked-unconTrolled hypERtension management based on office BP or on ambulatory blood pressure measurement (MASTER) Study: a randomised controlled trial protocol.
Masked uncontrolled hypertension (MUCH) carries an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) complications and can be identified through combined use of office (O) and ambulatory (A) blood pressure (BP) monitoring (M) in treated patients. However, it is still debated whether the information carried by ABPM should be considered for MUCH management. Aim of the MASked-unconTrolled hypERtension management based on OBP or on ambulatory blood pressure measurement (MASTER) Study is to assess the impact on outcome of MUCH management based on OBPM or ABPM
Measurement of the CP-violating phase \phi s in Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi- decays
Measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of
prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from
the dominantly CP-odd final state J/\psi pi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp
collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A
time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of
phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard
Model expectation. No evidence of direct CP violation is found.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; minor revisions on May 23, 201
Observation of two new baryon resonances
Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb recorded by the LHCb experiment.
In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content are
expected in this mass region: the spin-parity and
states, denoted and .
Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass
differences and the width of the heavier state to be
MeV,
MeV,
MeV, where the first and second
uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the
lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of
MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative
production rates of these states are also reported.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Study of B0(s)âK0Sh+hâ˛â decays with first observation of B0sâK0SKÂąĎâ and B0sâK0SĎ+Ďâ
A search for charmless three-body decays of B 0 and B0s mesons with a K0S meson in the final state is performed using the pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fbâ1, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment. Branching fractions of the B0(s)âK0Sh+hâ˛â decay modes (h (â˛) = Ď, K), relative to the well measured B0âK0SĎ+Ďâ decay, are obtained. First observation of the decay modes B0sâK0SKÂąĎâ and B0sâK0SĎ+Ďâ and confirmation of the decay B0âK0SKÂąĎâ are reported. The following relative branching fraction measurements or limits are obtained B(B0âK0SKÂąĎâ)B(B0âK0SĎ+Ďâ)=0.128Âą0.017(stat.)Âą0.009(syst.), B(B0âK0SK+Kâ)B(B0âK0SĎ+Ďâ)=0.385Âą0.031(stat.)Âą0.023(syst.), B(B0sâK0SĎ+Ďâ)B(B0âK0SĎ+Ďâ)=0.29Âą0.06(stat.)Âą0.03(syst.)Âą0.02(fs/fd), B(B0sâK0SKÂąĎâ)B(B0âK0SĎ+Ďâ)=1.48Âą0.12(stat.)Âą0.08(syst.)Âą0.12(fs/fd)B(B0sâK0SK+Kâ)B(B0âK0SĎ+Ďâ)â[0.004;0.068]at90%CL
Study of DJ meson decays to D+Ďâ, D0Ď+ and Dâ+Ďâ final states in pp collisions
A study of D+Ďâ, D0Ď+ and Dâ+Ďâ final states is performed using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fbâ1, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The D1(2420)0 resonance is observed in the Dâ+Ďâ final state and the Dâ2(2460) resonance is observed in the D+Ďâ, D0Ď+ and Dâ+Ďâ final states. For both resonances, their properties and spin-parity assignments are obtained. In addition, two natural parity and two unnatural parity resonances are observed in the mass region between 2500 and 2800 MeV. Further structures in the region around 3000 MeV are observed in all the Dâ+Ďâ, D+Ďâ and D0Ď+ final states
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Precision measurement of violation in decays
The time-dependent asymmetry in decays is
measured using collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity
of fb, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies
of and TeV. In a sample of 96 000 decays, the
-violating phase is measured, as well as the decay widths
and of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the
system. The values obtained are rad, ps, andps, where the first uncertainty is
statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single
measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with decays gives rad. All
measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. For the
first time the phase is measured independently for each polarisation
state of the system and shows no evidence for polarisation
dependence.Comment: 6 figure
Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation
Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks
produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in
2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of
the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or
electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a
simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of
fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses
below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal
mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass
difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses
of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV. These results
significantly reduce the allowed parameter space for a fourth generation of
fermions.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
