    PROPERTY LAW—THE IMPORTANCE OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY EDUCATION IN A KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY

    Entrepreneurs, inventors, and innovators can be faced with an overwhelming amount of information and guidance when they plan their business startup. One area that is often neglected is the business’s intellectual property. In fact, it is critical to attend to the protection of IP early in the startup process. Entrepreneurs and others need to know what to protect, as well as when and how to protect it. In the United States, IP accounts for thirty-eight percent of Gross Domestic Product, while IP and other intangible assets make up ninety percent of the market value of all S&P 500 companies. Increasingly, IP is arguably “the chief engine of wealth creation and economic growth in the world.” However, few people have exposure to a formal IP education. It is therefore vital that IP education be infused into educational curricula as widely as possible. If not, “any young person today who does not understand at least the basics of intellectual property—and its value and role in science, business, arts, and the professions—will find him or herself at a distinct disadvantage in the world of tomorrow.” In an effort to close this “IP education gap,” national organizations, such as the Michelson Institute for Intellectual Property and the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship are working to support educators to infuse IP education into a broad range of educational curricula. Two authors of this Article, Professors Diane Sabato and John Diffley of Springfield Technical Community College, are currently serving as Michelson IP Educators in Residence and working to bring IP education to community college students through business, honors, and history courses. Additionally, and as part of the IP EIR Program, Professors Sabato and Diffley partnered with a leading IP law practitioner, and this Article’s third author, Attorney Richard H. Kosakowski, to bring his significant expertise to community college audiences. In this Article, the authors will discuss the importance of IP to economic growth in general and in the context of U.S. history. The authors then discuss why IP education and knowledge are more important than ever for entrepreneurs, inventors, and innovators. The history and current state of IP education are examined, as are current efforts to infuse IP education into the community college education. Finally, Attorney Kosakowski discusses his experiences with IP law and offers best practices for protecting one’s IP

    Tumor Formation in Response to Loss of Chromatin Remodeler Chd5 in Zebrafish

    Chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 5 (CHD5) has been identified as a tumor suppressor in humans. Deletion or mutation of CHD5 has been observed in numerous cancers, including neuroblastoma and melanoma. We hypothesize that chd5 is also a tumor suppressor in zebrafish, a powerful model system to study tumorigenesis. Many genes involved in tumorigenesis are conserved in zebrafish, and they develop fully penetrant tumor phenotypes. We have created chd5 knock-out zebrafish using CRISPR/Cas9 and are monitoring them for tumor development. In addition to the chd5 knock-outs, we are undertaking a double-mutant approach by coupling loss of chd5 with other genes known to be important for tumor formation. Specifically, we are using a mutant form of the oncogene BRAF-V600E and a mutant version of the tumor suppressor tp53. BRAF-V600E is a kinase that promotes cell division. Tp53 is tumor suppressor gene that initiates apoptosis when severe DNA damage occurs. Expression of gain-of-function BRAF-V600E gene creates nevi in zebrafish, similar to the production of moles in humans, but is not sufficient to promote melanoma formation. Tp53 when mutated results in nerve sheath tumors in zebrafish at 8.5 months. When BRAF-V600E mutant is combined with mutant tp53, the fish develop melanomas beginning at 4 months. We have crossed our chd5 knock-out alleles with BRAF-V600E and tp53 to create various mutant lines, and we are examining the resulting progeny for tumor development, specifically melanoma. Establishment of a chd5-dependent tumor model using zebrafish will enable novel studies of the function of CHD5 in human cancers

    Controlled-release oxycodone and pregabalin in the treatment of neuropathic pain: results of a multicenter Italian study

    Abstract AIMS: The aim of our study was to compare the efficacy, safety, and quality of life of combination therapy with controlled-release (CR) oxycodone plus pregabalin versus monotherapy with either CR oxycodone or pregabalin in patients with neuropathic pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with moderate to severe neuropathic pain, despite the use of various pharmacologic treatments prior to study entry, were enrolled (n = 409) and treated with CR oxycodone plus pregabalin (n = 169), CR oxycodone (n = 106), and pregabalin (n = 134). Pain intensity was rated on an 11-point numerical rating scale (NRS). RESULTS: The combination of CR oxycodone plus pregabalin and CR oxycodone monotherapy were both more effective for alleviating neuropathic pain than pregabalin monotherapy (reduction in NRS value: 80, 76, and 46%, respectively; p </= 0.003). Significantly greater improvements from baseline in quality of life were reported with combination therapy than with monotherapy (p = 0.0009). At the end of treatment, the majority (91.2%) of patients receiving CR oxycodone plus pregabalin found that the treatment had been 'effective' or 'very effective'. Combination therapy also allowed a dose reduction of both agents (22% for CR oxycodone and 51% for pregabalin) compared with the dosages of the respective monotherapies. Combination therapy had a superior safety profile compared with pregabalin monotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of CR oxycodone plus pregabalin may represent a valuable addition to the existing pharmacotherapy for neuropathic pain and warrants further investigation

    Gabapentin and pregabalin for the acute post-operative pain management. A systematic-narrative review of the recent clinical evidences

    Background: Gabapentin and pregabalin inhibit Ca2+ currents via high-voltage-activated channels containing the α2δ-1 subunit, reducing neurotransmitter release and attenuating the postsynaptic excitability. They are antiepileptic drugs successfully used also for the chronic pain treatment. A large number of clinical trials indicate that gabapentin and pregabalin could be effective as postoperative analgesics. This systematic-narrative review aims to analyse the most recent evidences regarding the effect of gabapentinoids on postoperative pain treatment. Methods: Medline, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE and CINHAL were searched for recent (2006-2009) randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of gabapentin-pregabalin for postoperative pain relief in adults. Quality of RCTs was evaluated according to Jadad method. Visual analogue scale (VAS), opioid consumption and side-effects (nausea, vomiting, dizziness and sedation) were considered the most important outcomes. Results: An overall of 22 gabapentin (1640 patients), 8 pregabalin (707 patients) RCTs and seven meta-analysis were involved in this review. Gabapentin provided better post-operative analgesia and rescue analgesics sparing than placebo in 6 of the 10 RCTs that administered only pre-emptive analgesia. Fourteen RCTs suggested that gabapentin did not reduce PONV when compared with placebo, clonidine or lornoxicam. Pregabalin provided better post-operative analgesia and rescue analgesics sparing than placebo in two of the three RCTs that evaluated the effects of pregabalin alone vs placebo. Four studies reported no pregabalin effects on preventing the PONV. Conclusion: Gabapentin and pregabalin reduce pain and opioid consumption after surgery in confront with placebo, but comparisons with other standard post-operative regimens are not sufficient. Gabapentin and pregabalin seem not to have any influence on the prevention of PONV

    Aplicação de Sistema de Informações Geográficas na análise espacial de doenças do milho no Brasil.

    This study presents an application of the geographical information system technology on plant disease involving a multidisciplinary teamwork of geoprocessing and physiopathology specialists. The spatial analysis tools in a GIS were used to evaluate the spatial distribution of two diseases of maize in Brazil: polysora rusl caused by Puccinia polysora and tropical rust caused by Physopella zeae. A database of cIimate variables (mean temperature. relative humidity. and leaf wetness duration) of cIimatological normal from 1961-1990 was obtained and then related it to a mathematical model of disease development (polysora rust) and to the cIimate intervals (tropical rust) in order to obtain the maps. The choice of the model or the favorable climate interval is the important chalIenge of the method because the difficulty of adequacy to the spatial and temporal scales for the specific application. The major incidence of both disease occurred in almost alI the North region from January to June. although this region has traditionalIy a low production of maize. Considering the biggest producers regions. for both the diseases, favorable areas are located in part of Mato Grosso, Tocanlins. Minas Gerais; Mato Grosso do Sul. and coastal areas of São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina. varying among the dilferent months from January to June.
