Mechanisms for Lasing with Cold Atoms as the Gain Medium
We realize a laser with a cloud of cold rubidium atoms as gain medium, placed
in a low-finesse cavity. Three different regimes of laser emission are observed
corresponding respectively to Mollow, Raman and Four Wave Mixing mechanisms. We
measure an output power of up to 300 W and present the main properties of
these different lasers in each regime

A practice-led approach to facial animation research
In facial expression research, it is well established that certain emotional expressions are universally recognized. Studies into the observer perception of dynamic expressions have built upon this research by highlighting the importance of particular facial regions, timings, and temporal configurations to perception and interpretation. In many studies, the stimuli for such studies have been generated through posing by non-experts or performances by trained actors. However, skilled character animators are capable of crafting recognizable, believable emotional facial expressions as a part of their professional practice. ‘Emotional Avatars’ was conceived as an interdisciplinary research project which would draw upon the knowledge of animation practice and emotional psychology. The aim of the project was to jointly investigate the artistic generation and observer perception of emotional expression animation to determine whether the nuances of emotional facial expression could be artistically choreographed to enhance audience interpretation
Eliminating the Hadronic Uncertainty
The Standard Model Lagrangian requires the values of the fermion masses, the
Higgs mass and three other experimentally well-measured quantities as input in
order to become predictive. These are typically taken to be ,
and . Using the first of these, however, introduces a hadronic
contribution that leads to a significant error. If a quantity could be found
that was measured at high energy with sufficient precision then it could be
used to replace as input. The level of precision required for this to
happen is given for a number of precisely-measured observables. The boson
mass must be measured with an error of \,MeV, to \,MeV
and polarization asymmetry, , to that would seem to be the
most promising candidate. The r\^ole of renormalized parameters in perturbative
calculations is reviewed and the value for the electromagnetic coupling
constant in the renormalization scheme that is consistent

The Circumstellar Extinction of Planetary Nebulae
We analyze the dependence of circumstellar extinction on core mass for the
brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds and M31. We show
that in all three galaxies, a statistically significant correlation exists
between the two quantities, such that high core mass objects have greater
extinction. We model this behavior, and show that the relation is a simple
consequence of the greater mass loss and faster evolution times of high mass
stars. The relation is important because it provides a natural explanation for
the invariance of the [O III] 5007 planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF)
with population age: bright Population I PNe are extinguished below the cutoff
of the PNLF. It also explains the counter-intuitive observation that
intrinsically luminous Population I PNe often appear fainter than PNe from

Specificity Between Lactobacilli And Hymenopteran Hosts Is The Exception Rather Than The Rule
Lactobacilli (Lactobacillales: Lactobacillaceae) are well known for their roles in food fermentation, as probiotics, and in human health, but they can also be dominant members of the microbiota of some species of Hymenoptera (ants, bees, and wasps). Honey bees and bumble bees associate with host-specific lactobacilli, and some evidence suggests that these lactobacilli are important for bee health. Social transmission helps maintain associations between these bees and their respective microbiota. To determine whether lactobacilli associated with social hymenopteran hosts are generally host specific, we gathered publicly available Lactobacillus 16S rRNA gene sequences, along with Lactobacillus sequences from 454 pyrosequencing surveys of six other hymenopteran species (three sweat bees and three ants). We determined the comparative secondary structural models of 16S rRNA, which allowed us to accurately align the entire 16S rRNA gene, including fast-evolving regions. BLAST searches and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic reconstructions confirmed that honey and bumble bees have host-specific Lactobacillus associates. Regardless of colony size or within-colony oral sharing of food (trophallaxis), sweat bees and ants associate with lactobacilli that are closely related to those found in vertebrate hosts or in diverse environments. Why honey and bumble bees associate with host-specific lactobacilli while other social Hymenoptera do not remains an open question.
