A study of laser processed intermetallics
The effects of laser processing of Ni₃Al, TiAl,
Fe₃Al, and Ni₃Si on microstructure and phase
composition were characterized using optical and
scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction
analysis. It was found that laser processing
resulted in melt zones of ordered phases with fine
grains and microstructures. The effects of heat
treating for 1, 3, and 10 hours at 900C on both
microstructure and phase composition were also
analyzed. All non-equilibrium phases disappeared
after one hour of heat treatment. After 10 hours of
heat treatment order phases were retained in the
laser processed regions but non-equilibrium microstructures
remained
