Sachstandsanalyse 'betriebliche Umweltkennzahlen'

The use of corporate environmental indicators has steadily increased during the last years. Meanwhile, there exists no recognised common system or approach to develop environmental indicators for business. The aim of this report is to summarise and evaluate existing approaches to corporate environmental indicators and systems of environmental indicators. Possibilities and limits of using corporate environmental performance indicators are discussed as well as important links to other areas of research (e.g. national indicators systems, environmental cost accounting, international standardisation). On the basis of these results, a generic system for corporate environmental indicators is laid down and discussed in the report. It incorporates the current state of the art in the international standardisation process and may be used in different sectors of industry. In addition to this report, a guideline document for using corporate environmental indicators especially in SME's as well as a documentation about the standardisation activities in the field of environmental indicators have been developed within the project.
