A new species of <i>Syrticola</i> Willems & Claeys, 1982 (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from Japan with notes on the type species
A new species of Syrticola Willems & Claeys, 1982 (Harpacticoida: Cylindropsyllidae) is described from Okinawa, Japan. Morphological notes on the type species S. flandricus Willems & Claeys, 1982 and a key to the species are given. The inadequately described S. trispinosus A. Scott, 1896 is ranked as species inquirenda. The diagnosis of the genus is amended and its position in the Cylindropsyllidae re-assessed. Both sexes of S. intermedius sp. nov. were found to be infested by early parthenogenetic female stages of an as yet undescribed genus of Tantulocarida
Worker Wellbeing in Malaysia: Prediction of Wellbeing from Psychosocial Work Environment, Organizational Justice and Work Family Conflict
The current study investigates if psychosocial work environment, organizational justice and work family conflict predict Malaysian workersâ wellbeing. The current study expands previous research by assessing wellbeing using composite measures of job satisfaction, life satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect as well as job affective wellbeing, psychological and spiritual wellbeing. One thousand one hundred and sixty five Malaysian workers in the manufacturing sector (551 men, 614 women, age range: 18-59 years) answered questionnaires. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that psychosocial work environment, organizational justice and work family conflict predicted wellbeing. With regard to ethnic and cultural differences in wellbeing, Indian-Malaysians reported significantly higher levels of wellbeing compared to Malays. However, Chinese-Malaysians were not different from Indian-Malaysians or Malays. There was no significant gender difference on wellbeing. The interpretation of this cultural difference requires caution due to the small number of Indian-Malaysians in the sample
Desperate housewives: An analysis of the characterisations of female gamblers portrayed in gambling movies in Hong Kong
This article examines portrayals of female gamblers in recent Hong Kong movies. The authors report that the depiction of female gamblers is very different from that of male gamblers in the movies made in the same period. Whereas the male gamblers are pitching a lonely and desperate battle against the evil opponent, the female gamblers portrayed in the movies are housewives or small-time players who gamble only for their personal gain. A general negative overtone in portrayals of female gamblers was interpreted as a reflection of the traditional view that discourages women from gambling. The shift of gambling themes in the Hong Kong movies has been identified to reflect the most salient concerns among Hong Kong residents. Such changes are attributed to particular social and cultural changes in the community
Apollo asteroids (1566) Icarus and 2007 MK6: Icarus family members?
Although it is more complicated to search for near-Earth object (NEO)
families than main belt asteroid (MBA) families, since differential orbital
evolution within a NEO family can cause current orbital elements to drastically
differ from each other, we have found that Apollo asteroids (1566) Icarus and
the newly discovered 2007 MK6 are almost certainly related. Specifically, their
orbital evolutions show a similar profile, time shifted by only ~1000 yr, based
on our time-lag theory. The dynamical relationship between Icarus and 2007 MK6
along with a possible dust band, the Taurid-Perseid meteor swarm, implies the
first detection of an asteroidal NEO family, namely the "Icarus asteroid
family".Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, to appear on Astrophysical Journal Letters

A LEVEL SET APPROACH REFLECTING SHEET STRUCTURE WITH SINGLE AUXILIARY FUNCTION FOR EVOLVING SPIRALS ON CRYSTAL SURFACES
We introduce a new level set method to simulate motion of spirals in a crystal surface governed by an eikonal-curvature ow equation. Our formulation allows collision of several spirals and different strength (different modulus of Burgers vectors) of screw dislocation centers. We represent a set of spirals by a level set of a single auxiliary function u minus a pre-determined multi-valued sheet structure function , which re ects the strength of spirals (screw dislocation centers). The level set equation used in our method for u is the same as that of the eikonal-curvature ow equation. The multi-valued nature of the sheet structure function is only invoked when preparing the initial auxiliary function, which is nontrivial, and in the nal step when extracting information such as the height of the spiral steps. Our simulation enables us not only to reproduce all speculations on spirals in a classical paper by Burton, Cabrera and Frank (1951) but also to nd several new phenomena
Job satisfaction among Malaysian employees: An application of Spectorâs Job Satisfaction Survey in the South East Asian context.
Job satisfaction explains individualsâ reactions towards their jobs. Many studies find that job satisfaction is a well-known construct that is widely used to study work-related well-being; and contributes significantly to employeesâ overall quality of life. The current paper examines job satisfaction among Malaysian employees using the Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS). In particular, the present study compares the job satisfaction levels of Malaysian samples with those of a previously reported study involving samples from Singapore and the United States. Results of one sample t-test reveals statistically significant differences in pay, promotion, fringe benefits, contingent rewards, supervision, co-workers and nature of work subscales. No cultural influence exists between Malaysian and Singapore samples in terms of perceived operating conditions satisfaction. Similarly, no statistically significant difference exists between Malaysian and the United States perception towards the communication facet. Furthermore, the results of factor analysis support the previous study, suggesting possible cultural differences in the understanding of, and consensus regarding, the structure of the job satisfaction scale
Detecting Spin-Polarized Currents in Ballistic Nanostructures
We demonstrate a mesoscopic spin polarizer/analyzer system that allows the
spin polarization of current from a quantum point contact in an in-plane
magnetic field to be measured. A transverse focusing geometry is used to couple
current from an emitter point contact into a collector point contact. At large
in-plane fields, with the point contacts biased to transmit only a single spin
(g < e^2/h), the voltage across the collector depends on the spin polarization
of the current incident on it. Spin polarizations of greater than 80% are found
for both emitter and collector at 300mK and 7T in-plane field.Comment: related papers at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed
Sign-changing tower of bubbles for a sinh-Poisson equation with asymmetric exponents
Motivated by the statistical mechanics description of stationary
2D-turbulence, for a sinh-Poisson type equation with asymmetric nonlinearity,
we construct a concentrating solution sequence in the form of a tower of
singular Liouville bubbles, each of which has a different degeneracy exponent.
The asymmetry parameter corresponds to the ratio between the
intensity of the negatively rotating vortices and the intensity of the
positively rotating vortices. Our solutions correspond to a superposition of
highly concentrated vortex configurations of alternating orientation; they
extend in a nontrivial way some known results for . Thus, by
analyzing the case we emphasize specific properties of the
physically relevant parameter in the vortex concentration phenomena
