Population Ageing and the Ecology in China: Towards a Balanced Developmental Strategy Model
As the most populous country in the world, China is enjoying unprecedented economic growth, but this development has caused serious degradation of the country’s physical environment. The issues are particularly aggravated with China’s quickly expanding urbanisation and ageing population. Based on recent data, this paper analyses China’s demographic profile and explores the country’s ecological deterioration issues in order to seek a balanced economic developmental strategy model. Through cluster analysis, the paper explores the influences of population change and economic growth on the environment with the purpose of providing some valuable knowledge and lessons for achieving a quality economic growth for China. It argues that changes have to be made to ease the double burden of restoring the deteriorating ecosystems and dealing with the ageing crisis in the country
Supporting Pre-Service Primary School Teachers with Hands-on-Science
The education that primary school students receive shapes their relationship with science. Elementary school teachers report they have low confidence and enthusiasm about teaching science. The Hands-on-Science Program at UT Austin was created to serve the unique needs of Applied Learning and Development majors. HoS consists of four required content courses: Physics, Chemistry & Geology, Biology, and Astronomy & Earth Climate. HoS classes differ from traditional science courses in two ways: (1) method of instruction, and (2) content. Our students attain higher learning gains and display improved attitudes towards learning science, compared to students who take traditional science classes
Environmental damage costs from airborne pollution in the major cities in China
This paper estimates the environment external costs due to air pollutants via the impacts pathway approach used for ExternE project in the major cities in China over the period 2003-2006. The estimation results show that the external costs were US$ 20.15 billion in 2006, representing 2.28% of gross domestic product (GDP). This means that China suffered a lot for the air pollutants with the development of the economy. In the composition of external costs, damages to human health are the effects that generate the major part of externalities associated with air pollutants in these cities. The trend of external costs representing GDP in the sum of major cities was declining from 2003 to 2006, though the group in risk and agricultural products was increasing. Based on these finding, effective environmental policies and plans for economic development in these cities should focus not only on the volume of pollutants emission of SO2 and PM10, but also take other impact factors into account
