Absolute instruments and perfect imaging in geometrical optics
We investigate imaging by spherically symmetric absolute instruments that
provide perfect imaging in the sense of geometrical optics. We derive a number
of properties of such devices, present a general method for designing them and
use this method to propose several new absolute instruments, in particular a
lens providing a stigmatic image of an optically homogeneous region and having
a moderate refractive index range.Comment: 20 pages, 9 image
Simple Metals at High Pressure
In this lecture we review high-pressure phase transition sequences exhibited
by simple elements, looking at the examples of the main group I, II, IV, V, and
VI elements. General trends are established by analyzing the changes in
coordination number on compression. Experimentally found phase transitions and
crystal structures are discussed with a brief description of the present
theoretical picture.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, lecture notes for the lecture given at the Erice

Influence of microwave fields on the electron transport through a quantum dot in the presence of a direct tunneling between leads
We consider the time-dependent electron transport through a quantum dot
coupled to two leads in the presence of the additional over-dot (bridge)
tunneling channel. By using the evolution operator method together with the
wide-band limit approximation we derived the analytical formulaes for the
quantum dot charge and current flowing in the system. The influence of the
external microwave field on the time-average quantum dot charge, the current
and the derivatives of the average current with respect to the gate and
source-drain voltages has been investigated for a wide range of parameters.Comment: 28 Pages, 11 Postscript figure
Halo mass - concentration relation from weak lensing
We perform a statistical weak lensing analysis of dark matter profiles around
tracers of halo mass from galactic- to cluster-size halos. In this analysis we
use 170,640 isolated ~L* galaxies split into ellipticals and spirals, 38,236
groups traced by isolated spectroscopic Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) and 13,823
MaxBCG clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) covering a wide range
of richness. Together these three samples allow a determination of the density
profiles of dark matter halos over three orders of magnitude in mass, from
10^{12} M_{sun} to 10^{15} M_{sun}. The resulting lensing signal is consistent
with an NFW or Einasto profile on scales outside the central region. We find
that the NFW concentration parameter c_{200b} decreases with halo mass, from
around 10 for galactic halos to 4 for cluster halos. Assuming its dependence on
halo mass in the form of c_{200b} = c_0 [M/(10^{14}M_{sun}/h)]^{\beta}, we find
c_0=4.6 +/- 0.7 (at z=0.22) and \beta=0.13 +/- 0.07, with very similar results
for the Einasto profile. The slope (\beta) is in agreement with theoretical
predictions, while the amplitude is about two standard deviations below the
predictions for this mass and redshift, but we note that the published values
in the literature differ at a level of 10-20% and that for a proper comparison
our analysis should be repeated in simulations. We discuss the implications of
our results for the baryonic effects on the shear power spectrum: since these
are expected to increase the halo concentration, the fact that we see no
evidence of high concentrations on scales above 20% of the virial radius
suggests that baryonic effects are limited to small scales, and are not a
significant source of uncertainty for the current weak lensing measurements of
the dark matter power spectrum. [ABRIDGED]Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted to JCAP pending minor revisions that

Predictive fermion mass matrix ansatzes in non-supersymmetric SO(10) grand unification
We investigate the status of predictive fermion mass ansatzes which make use
of the grand unification scale conditions , , and in non-supersymmetric SO(10) grand unification.
The gauge symmetry below an intermediate symmetry breaking scale is
assumed to be that of the standard model with either one Higgs doublet or two
Higgs doublets . We find in both cases that a maximum of 5 standard model
parameters may be predicted within experimental ranges. We find that
the standard model scenario predicts the low energy to be in
a range which includes its experimental mid-value 0.044 and which for a large
top mass can extend to lower values than the range resulting in the
supersymmetric case. In the two Higgs standard model case, we identify the
regions of parameter space for which unification of the bottom quark and tau
lepton Yukawa couplings is possible at grand unification scale. In fact, we
find that unification of the top, bottom and tau Yukawa couplings is possible
with the running b-quark mass within the preferred range provided is near the low end of its allowed
range. In this case, one may make 6 predictions which include
within its confidence limits. However unless the running mass , third generation Yukawa coupling unification requires the top mass to be
greater thanComment: 30 pages, 8 figures available on request from

Metastable Dynamics above the Glass Transition
The element of metastability is incorporated in the fluctuating nonlinear
hydrodynamic description of the mode coupling theory (MCT) of the liquid-glass
transition. This is achieved through the introduction of the defect density
variable into the set of slow variables with the mass density and
the momentum density . As a first approximation, we consider the case
where motions associated with are much slower than those associated with
. Self-consistently, assuming one is near a critical surface in the MCT
sense, we find that the observed slowing down of the dynamics corresponds to a
certain limit of a very shallow metastable well and a weak coupling between
and . The metastability parameters as well as the exponents
describing the observed sequence of time relaxations are given as smooth
functions of the temperature without any evidence for a special temperature. We
then investigate the case where the defect dynamics is included. We find that
the slowing down of the dynamics corresponds to the system arranging itself
such that the kinetic coefficient governing the diffusion of the
defects approaches from above a small temperature-dependent value .Comment: 38 pages, 14 figures (6 figs. are included as a uuencoded tar-

Anomalous Behavior Of The Complex Conductivity Of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7 Observed With THz Spectroscopy
We have measured the electrodynamic properties of Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7
single crystal thin films as a function of temperature using coherent
THz-time-domain spectroscopy. We obtain directly the complex conductivity
, the London penetration depth , the
plasma frequency , and the quasiparticle scattering rate . We
find that drops exponentially rapidly with below the critical
temperature in {\em all} the superconducting samples, implying that this
behavior is a {\em signature} of high- superconductivity. The plasma
frequency decreases with increasing Pr content, providing evidence that Pr
depletes carriers, leaving the CuO planes {\em underdoped}. Both the
conductivity in the THz region and the dc resistivity yield evidence for the
opening of a spin gap {\em above} .Comment: 9 pages, REVTEX 3.
A Search for Jet Handedness in Hadronic Decays
We have searched for signatures of polarization in hadronic jets from decays using the ``jet handedness'' method. The polar angle
asymmetry induced by the high SLC electron-beam polarization was used to
separate quark jets from antiquark jets, expected to be left- and
right-polarized, respectively. We find no evidence for jet handedness in our
global sample or in a sample of light quark jets and we set upper limits at the
95% C.L. of 0.063 and 0.099 respectively on the magnitude of the analyzing
power of the method proposed by Efremov {\it et al.}Comment: Revtex, 8 pages, 2 figure
New Dynamic Monte Carlo Renormalization Group Method
The dynamical critical exponent of the two-dimensional spin-flip Ising model
is evaluated by a Monte Carlo renormalization group method involving a
transformation in time. The results agree very well with a finite-size scaling
analysis performed on the same data. The value of is
obtained, which is consistent with most recent estimates
