Forecast analysis of optical waveguide bus performance
Elements to be considered in the design of a data bus include: architecture; data rate; modulation, encoding, detection; power distribution requirements; protocol, work structure; bus reliability, maintainability; interterminal transmission medium; cost; and others specific to application. Fiber- optic data bus considerations for a 32 port transmissive star architecture, are discussed in a tutorial format. General optical-waveguide bus concepts, are reviewed. The electrical and optical performance of a 32 port transmissive star bus, and the effects of temperature on the performance of optical-waveguide buses are examined. A bibliography of pertinent references and the bus receiver test results are included
The spectral type of CHS7797 - an intriguing very low mass periodic variable in the Orion Nebula Cluster
We present the spectroscopic characterization of the unusual high-amplitude
very low mass pre-main-sequence periodic variable CHS7797. This study is based
on optical medium-resolution (R=2200) spectroscopy in the 6450-8600 A range,
carried out with GMOS-GEMINI-S in March 2011. Observations of CHS7797 have been
carried out at two distinct phases of the 17.8d period, namely at maximum and
four days before maximum. Four different spectral indices were used for the
spectral classification at these two phases, all of them well-suited for
spectral classification of young and obscured late M dwarfs. In addition, the
gravity-sensitive NaI (8183/8195 A) and KI (7665/7699 A) doublet lines were
used to confirm the young age of CHS7797. From the spectrum obtained at maximum
light we derived a spectral type (SpT) of M6.05, while for the spectrum taken
four days before maximum the derived SpT is M5.75. The derived SpTs confirm
that CHS7797 has a mass in the stellar-substellar boundary mass range. In
addition, the small differences in the derived SpTs at the two observed phases
may provide indirect hints that CHS7797 is a binary system of similar mass
components surrounded by a tilted circumbinary disk, a system similar to KH15D.Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication A&
The microbial food revolution
Our current food system relies on unsustainable practices, which often fail to provide healthy diets to a growing population. Therefore, there is an urgent demand for new sustainable nutrition sources and processes. Microorganisms have gained attention as a new food source solution, due to their low carbon footprint, low reliance on land, water and seasonal variations coupled with a favourable nutritional profile. Furthermore, with the emergence and use of new tools, specifically in synthetic biology, the uses of microorganisms have expanded showing great potential to fulfil many of our dietary needs. In this review, we look at the different applications of microorganisms in food, and examine the history, state-of-the-art and potential to disrupt current foods systems. We cover both the use of microbes to produce whole foods out of their biomass and as cell factories to make highly functional and nutritional ingredients. The technical, economical, and societal limitations are also discussed together with the current and future perspectives
Growth saturation of unstable thin films on transverse-striped hydrophilic-hydrophobic micropatterns
Using three-dimensional numerical simulations, we demonstrate the growth
saturation of an unstable thin liquid film on micropatterned
hydrophilic-hydrophobic substrates. We consider different transverse-striped
micropatterns, characterized by the total fraction of hydrophilic coverage and
the width of the hydrophilic stripes. We compare the growth of the film on the
micropatterns to the steady states observed on homogeneous substrates, which
correspond to a saturated sawtooth and growing finger configurations for
hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates, respectively. The proposed
micropatterns trigger an alternating fingering-spreading dynamics of the film,
which leads to a complete suppression of the contact line growth above a
critical fraction of hydrophilic stripes. Furthermore, we find that increasing
the width of the hydrophilic stripes slows down the advancing front, giving
smaller critical fractions the wider the hydrophilic stripes are. Using
analytical approximations, we quantitatively predict the growth rate of the
contact line as a function of the covering fraction, and predict the threshold
fraction for saturation as a function of the stripe width.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
What makes Yarrowia lipolytica well suited for industry?
Yarrowia lipolytica possesses natural and engineered traits that make it a good host for the industrial bioproduction of chemicals, fuels, foods, and pharmaceuticals. In recent years, academic and industrial researchers have assessed its potential, developed synthetic biology techniques, improved its features, scaled its processes, and identified its limitations. Both publications and patents related to Y. lipolytica have shown a drastic increase during the past decade. Here, we discuss the characteristics of this yeast that make it suitable for industry and the remaining challenges for its wider use at large scale. We present evidence herein that shows the importance and potential of Y. lipolytica in bioproduction such that it may soon be one of the preferred choices of industry
Conditional purity and quantum correlation measures in two qubit mixed states
We analyze and show experimental results of the conditional purity, the
quantum discord and other related measures of quantum correlation in mixed
two-qubit states constructed from a pair of photons in identical polarization
states. The considered states are relevant for the description of spin pair
states in interacting spin chains in a transverse magnetic field. We derive
clean analytical expressions for the conditional local purity and other
correlation measures obtained as a result of a remote local projective
measurement, which are fully verified by the experimental results. A simple
exact expression for the quantum discord of these states in terms of the
