Modelling the impact of the recession on greenhouse gases from agriculture in Ireland
working paperThe effects of the recession of 2009 have been felt across the economy of
Ireland. The rapid contraction in economic activity has had its effect on greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions as well. It is possible to model the recession’s effect on
agricultural GHG in the FAPRI-Ireland GHG model using the latest international
commodity price projections from Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute
(FAPRI). The FAPRI-Ireland GHG model creates projections of future levels of Irish
agricultural activity and then uses a mix of national and default emissions factors to
convert this activity to estimates of annual GHG emissions from now to 2020. Our
model is shocked using post-downturn commodity price projections for a selection of
exogenous prices. The changes to these international commodity prices reflect the
international market response to the downturn, and as such they have an impact on the
level of GHG emitted by the agricultural sector in Ireland. This analysis finds that,
despite the depth and breadth of the recession, the impact on GHG emissions from
Irish agriculture has been muted. The impact of the shock is to reduce the projected
annual emissions from the sector by only 0.14 Mt by 2020. This compares to the 2.97
Mt reduction in annual emissions which the sector would have to achieve if, for
example, a reduction target of 20 percent on 2005 levels were to be imposed
Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA Colonization Rates among Gravidas Admitted to Labor and Delivery: A Pilot Study
Objective. To determine colonization rates of Staphylococcus aureus given the potential for future intervention trials aimed at reducing surgical-site infectious morbidity, and to estimate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) rates in our patient population. Study design. Prospective pilot investigation comprising data from 104 gravidas admitted to an urban labor and delivery unit. All underwent anterior nares culture collection with a subset also undergoing vaginal culture collection. Results. Twenty-two percent of women were colonized in the anterior nares. Of the 28 women who had vaginal cultures collected, 4/28 (14.2%) demonstrated Staphylococcus aureus colonization. There was 82% concordance between the nares and vagina. Nine percent of isolates were MRSA strains. Overall, 2/96 (2.1%) of women were MRSA-colonized.
Conclusions. Rates of Staphylococcus aureus colonization among gravidas entering labor and delivery are modest and consistent with the general population. MRSA rates among gravidas appear to be reassuringly low in this pilot study
Hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia due to indapamide

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.Objectives: To review Australian adverse drug reaction reports describing hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia attributed to indapamide and compare the characteristics of the patients with those in Australian reports implicating two other diuretic products (hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride hydrochloride; chlorothiazide). Design: Descriptive analysis using reports from the database of the Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee (ADRAC). Main outcome measures: Numbers of reports of hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia; proportion of such reports in total reports of adverse reactions to each drug; severity of electrolyte disturbances. Results: Between August 1984 and September 2000, 84 Australian reports of hyponatraemia and 87 reports of hypokalaemia, in which indapamide was the sole suspected drug, were submitted to ADRAC. Most reports involved an indapamide dose of 2.5 mg daily. There was a significantly greater proportion of reports of hyponatraemia with indapamide and with the hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride combination than with chlorothiazide; hypokalaemia was significantly more common for indapamide than for the other two drugs. Of the 87 reports of hypokalaemia with indapamide, 35 patients also had hyponatraemia. For all three drugs, at least 80% of reports of hyponatraemia were in people aged 65 or over, and electrolyte disturbance was most commonly reported in elderly women. Conclusions: Hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia have been described in 20.9% and 21.7%, respectively, of reports to ADRAC in which indapamide was the sole suspected drug. Flavonoid Actions on Receptors for the Inhibitory Neurotransmitter GABA
Flavonoids, both naturally occurring and synthetic, are known to have multiple effects on the activation of ionotropic receptors for γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in our brains. They can act as positive or negative allosteric modulators, enhancing or reducing the effect of GABA. They can elicit a direct activation of the receptors. They can also act to modulate the action of other modulators. This ability to influence function via their actions on GABA receptors permits a range of effects of flavonoids, including relief of anxiety, anticonvulsant, analgesic and sedative actions
Design and fabrication of chemically robust three-dimensional microfluidic valves
A current problem in microfluidics is that poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), used to fabricate many microfluidic devices, is not compatible with most organic solvents. Fluorinated compounds are more chemically robust than PDMS but, historically, it has been nearly impossible to construct valves out of them by multilayer soft lithography (MSL) due to the difficulty of bonding layers made of non-stick fluoropolymers necessary to create traditional microfluidic valves. With our new three-dimensional (3D) valve design we can fabricate microfluidic devices from fluorinated compounds in a single monolithic layer that is resistant to most organic solvents with minimal swelling. This paper describes the design and development of 3D microfluidic valves by molding of a perfluoropolyether, termed Sifel, onto printed wax molds. The fabrication of Sifel-based microfluidic devices using this technique has great potential in chemical synthesis and analysis
A Pilot Randomised Control Trial of Digitally-Mediated Social Stories for Children on the Autism Spectrum
Social stories is a widely used intervention for children on the autism spectrum, particularly within an educational context. To date, systematic reviews and meta analyses of the research evaluating social stories has produced mixed results, often due to a lack of methodological rigour and variability in the development and delivery of the social stories. To address the gap in methodological rigour, a pilot Randomised Control Trial (RCT) was conducted, incorporating a social stories intervention group (n = 9 children on the autism spectrum) and an attentional control group who received a poem (n = 6 children on the autism spectrum) using a digital platform to address variability. Digitally-mediated social stories were found to be effective in producing beneficial changes in behaviour outcomes, which were sustained at a six-week follow up.</p
