Structure of Extreme Correlated Equilibria: a Zero-Sum Example and its Implications
We exhibit the rich structure of the set of correlated equilibria by
analyzing the simplest of polynomial games: the mixed extension of matching
pennies. We show that while the correlated equilibrium set is convex and
compact, the structure of its extreme points can be quite complicated. In
finite games the ratio of extreme correlated to extreme Nash equilibria can be
greater than exponential in the size of the strategy spaces. In polynomial
games there can exist extreme correlated equilibria which are not finitely
supported; we construct a large family of examples using techniques from
ergodic theory. We show that in general the set of correlated equilibrium
distributions of a polynomial game cannot be described by conditions on
finitely many moments (means, covariances, etc.), in marked contrast to the set
of Nash equilibria which is always expressible in terms of finitely many
moments

This paper describes the development of a unique andinno-vative program in power engineering education enhanced through an Industry/Academic interrelationship. This program is devoted to both the teaching and the practice of power engineering. The development of the Industry/Academic relationship and its value as a model for power engineering education are related. A summary of present and proposed future activities concludes the report. Quadrupole correlations and inertial properties of rotating nuclei
The contribution of quantum shape fluctuations to inertial properties of
rotating nuclei has been analyzed for QQ-nuclear interaction using the random
phase approximation (RPA). The different recipes to treat the cranking mean
field plus RPA problem are considered. The effects of the dN=2 quadrupole
matrix elements and the role of the volume conservation condition are

Social democracy, embeddedness and decommodification: On the conceptual innovations and intellectual affiliations of Karl Polanyi
Of the several debates that revolve around the work of the economic historian and political economist Karl Polanyi, one that continues to exercise minds concerns his analysis of, and political attitudes toward, post-war capitalism and the welfare state. Simplified a little, it is a debate with two sides. To borrow IvĂĄn SzelĂ©nyi's terms, one side constructs a âhardâ Karl Polanyi, the other a âsoftâ one. The former advocated a socialist mixed economy dominated by redistributive mechanisms. He was a radical socialist for whom the market should never be the dominant mechanism of economic coordination. His âsoftâ alter ego insisted that the market system remain essentially intact but be complemented by redistributive mechanisms. The âdouble movementâ â the central thesis of his âGreat Transformationâ â acts, in this reading, as a self-correcting mechanism that moderates the excesses of market fundamentalism; its author was positioned within the social-democratic mainstream for which the only realistic desirable goal is a regulated form of capitalism. In terms of textual evidence there is much to be said for both interpretations. In this article I suggest a different approach, one that focuses upon the meaning of Polanyi's concepts in relation to their socio-political and intellectual environment
Direct observation of conductive filament formation in Alq3 based organic resistive memories
This work explores resistive switching mechanisms in non-volatile organic memory devices based on tris(8-hydroxyquinolie)aluminum (Alq 3 ). Advanced characterization tools are applied to investigate metal diffusion in ITO/Alq 3 /Ag memory device stacks leading to conductive filament formation. The morphology of Alq 3 /Ag layers as a function of the metal evaporation conditions is studied by X-ray reflectivity, while depth profile analysis with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry is applied to characterize operational memory elements displaying reliable bistable current-voltage characteristics. 3D images of the distribution of silver inside the organic layer clearly point towards the existence of conductive filaments and allow for the identification of the initial filament formation and inactivation mechanisms during switching of the device. Initial filament formation is suggested to be driven by field assisted diffusion of silver from abundant structures formed during the top electrode evaporation, whereas thermochemical effects lead to local filament inactivation. IgG-index predicts neurological morbidity in patients with infectious central nervous system diseases
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prognosis assessment of patients with infectious and neoplastic disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) may still pose a challenge. In this retrospective cross-sectional study the prognostic value of basic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) parameters in patients with bacterial meningitis, viral meningoencephalitis and leptomeningeal metastases were evaluated.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>White blood cell count, CSF/serum glucose ratio, protein, CSF/serum albumin quotient and Immunoglobulin indices for IgG, IgA and IgM were analyzed in 90 patients with bacterial meningitis, 117 patients with viral meningoencephalitis and 36 patients with leptomeningeal metastases in a total of 480 CSF samples.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the initial spinal tap, the IgG-index was the only independent predictor for unfavorable outcome (GOS < 5) in patients with infectious CNS diseases but not in patients with leptomeningeal metastases. The sensitivity and specificity of an IgG-index of 0.75 and higher for predicting unfavorable outcome was 40.9% and 80.8% in bacterial meningitis and 40% and 94.8% in viral meningoencephalitis, respectively. No significant associations between CSF parameters and outcome could be observed in follow-up CSF samples.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present study suggests that in infectious CNS diseases an elevated IgG-Index might be an additional marker for the early identification of patients at risk for neurological morbidity.</p
