The high-lying Li levels at excitation energy around 21 MeV
The H+He cluster structure in Li was investigated by the
H(,H He)n kinematically complete experiment at the incident
energy = 67.2 MeV. We have observed two resonances at =
21.30 and 21.90 MeV which are consistent with the He(H, )Li
analysis in the Ajzenberg-Selove compilation. Our data are compared with the

The Photonic Lantern
Photonic lanterns are made by adiabatically merging several single-mode cores
into one multimode core. They provide low-loss interfaces between single-mode
and multimode systems where the precise optical mapping between cores and

Improved large-mode area endlessly single-mode photonic crystal fibers
We numerically study the possibilities for improved large-mode area endlessly
single mode photonic crystal fibers for use in high-power delivery
applications. By carefully choosing the optimal hole diameter we find that a
triangular core formed by three missing neighboring air holes considerably
improves the mode area and loss properties compared to the case with a core
formed by one missing air hole. In a realized fiber we demonstrate an
enhancement of the mode area by ~30 % without a corresponding increase in the

Channeling Effect and Improvement of the Efficiency of Charged Particle Registration with Crystal Scintillators
The importance is emphasized of taking into account the channeling along the
low index crystallographic axes and planes of a part of low-energy (1-10 keV)
recoil ions in measurements of their parameters with crystal scintillators of
the type of NaI(Tl) etc. Because the nucleus stopping power in channels is low
as compared with electronic stopping power, the light yield of the scintillator
must be, accordingly, higher in the given case than that for ions having higher
energy (tens keV and more), which lose most part of their energy via nuclear
collisions outside channels. Hence, in particular, it follows that the DAMA/NaI
observations in Gran Sasso of the annual modulation of the signal frequency in
a narrow range of scintillations with an amplitude of 2-6 keV electron
equivalent may be due to incidence onto the Earth of exceedingly massive
particles (of the type of Planckian objects) from elongated Earth-crossing
heliocentric orbits at a velocity of 30-50 km/s. In NaI(Tl), these particles
create the iodine recoil ions with just the energy of 2-6 keV.Comment: 10 page
The development of a new measure of quality of life for children with congenital cardiac disease
The purpose of the study was to develop a questionnaire measuring health-related R1 quality of life for children and adolescents with congenital heart disease, the ConQol, that would have both clinical and research applications. We describe here the process of construction of a questionnaire, the piloting and the development of a weighted scoring system, and data on the psychometric performance of the measure in a sample of 640 children and young people recruited via 6 regional centres for paediatric cardiology from across the United Kingdom. The ConQol has two versions, one designed for children aged from 8 to 11 years, and the other for young people aged from 12 to 16 years. Initial findings suggest that it is a valid and reliable instrument, is acceptable to respondents, and is simple to administer in both a research and clinical context
Obligations in the Shade: The Application of Fiduciary Directors’ Duties to Shadow Directors
This paper argues that shadow directors, as defined in English law, ought to owe the full range of directors’ duties, both fiduciary and non-fiduciary, enacted in the Companies Act 2006 (CA 2006), ss 171-177, to the relevant company under their influence. Following the enactment of the recent Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Act (SBEEA) 2015, these general duties are likely to apply to shadow directors, although there is still a case to be made as to why shadow directors should owe fiduciary duties to the relevant company. It is argued here that such a relationship is fiduciary in nature, but the current approach deployed in the English courts, based upon the application of Finn’s originally formulated ‘undertaking’ test alone, is inadequate.
Given these inadequacies, it is proposed that the Canadian ‘power and discretion’ test be deployed alongside the ‘undertaking’ test, in order to provide a far more comprehensive justification for the application of fiduciary obligations to shadow directors. This position is supported by establishing a theoretical basis for the ‘power and discretion’ test, via Paul Miller’s ‘fiduciary powers theory’, as well as considering the application of such a test to shadow directors
Resonant Bend Loss in Leakage Channel Fibers
Leakage channel fibers, designed to suppress higher-order modes, demonstrate
resonant power loss at certain critical radii of curvature. Outside the
resonance, the power recovers to the levels offset by the usual mechanism of
bend-induced loss. Using C-imaging, we experimentally characterize this
anomaly and identify the corresponding physical mechanism as the radiative
decay of the fundamental mode mediated by the resonant coupling to a cladding

Optical Properties of Pentacene and Perfluoropentacene Thin Films
The optical properties of pentacene (PEN) and perfluoropentacene(PFP) thin
films on various SiO2 substrates were studied using variable angle
spectroscopic ellipsometry. Structural characterization was performed using
X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. A uniaxial model with the optic
axis normal to the sample surface was used to analyze the ellipsometry data. A
Strong optical anisotropy was observed and enabled the direction of the
transition dipole of the absorption bands to be determined. Furthermore,
comparison of the optical constants of PEN and PFP thin films with the
absorption spectra of the monomers in solution shows significant changes due to
the crystalline environment. Relative to the monomer spectrum the HOMO-LUMO
transition observed in PEN (PFP) thin film is reduced by 210 meV (280 meV).
Surprisingly, a second absorption band in the PFP thin film shows a slight
blueshift (40 meV) compared to the spectrum of the monomer with its transition
