Improved Working Memory but No Effect on Striatal Vesicular Monoamine Transporter Type 2 after Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation
Studies in rodents indicate that diets deficient in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) lower dopamine neurotransmission as measured by striatal vesicular monoamine transporter type 2 (VMAT2) density and amphetamine-induced dopamine release. This suggests that dietary supplementation with fish oil might increase VMAT2 availability, enhance dopamine storage and release, and improve dopamine-dependent cognitive functions such as working memory. To investigate this mechanism in humans, positron emission tomography (PET) was used to measure VMAT2 availability pre- and post-supplementation of n-3 PUFA in healthy individuals. Healthy young adult subjects were scanned with PET using [11C]-(+)-α-dihydrotetrabenzine (DTBZ) before and after six months of n-3 PUFA supplementation (Lovaza, 2 g/day containing docosahexaenonic acid, DHA 750 mg/d and eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA 930 mg/d). In addition, subjects underwent a working memory task (n-back) and red blood cell membrane (RBC) fatty acid composition analysis pre- and post-supplementation. RBC analysis showed a significant increase in both DHA and EPA post-supplementation. In contrast, no significant change in [11C]DTBZ binding potential (BPND) in striatum and its subdivisions were observed after supplementation with n-3 PUFA. No correlation was evident between n-3 PUFA induced change in RBC DHA or EPA levels and change in [11C]DTBZ BPND in striatal subdivisions. However, pre-supplementation RBC DHA levels was predictive of baseline performance (i.e., adjusted hit rate, AHR on 3-back) on the n-back task (y = 0.19+0.07, r2 = 0.55, p = 0.009). In addition, subjects AHR performance improved on 3-back post-supplementation (pre 0.65±0.27, post 0.80±0.15, p = 0.04). The correlation between n-back performance, and DHA levels are consistent with reports in which higher DHA levels is related to improved cognitive performance. However, the lack of change in [11C]DBTZ BPND indicates that striatal VMAT2 regulation is not the mechanism of action by which n-3 PUFA improves cognitive performance. © 2012 Narendran et al
Analytical method to measure three-dimensional strain patterns in the left ventricle from single slice displacement data
Background:
Displacement encoded Cardiovascular MR (CMR) can provide high spatial resolution measurements of three-dimensional (3D) Lagrangian displacement. Spatial gradients of the Lagrangian displacement field are used to measure regional myocardial strain. In general, adjacent parallel slices are needed in order to calculate the spatial gradient in the through-slice direction. This necessitates the acquisition of additional data and prolongs the scan time. The goal of this study is to define an analytic solution that supports the reconstruction of the out-of-plane components of the Lagrangian strain tensor in addition to the in-plane components from a single-slice displacement CMR dataset with high spatio-temporal resolution. The technique assumes incompressibility of the myocardium as a physical constraint.
Results:
The feasibility of the method is demonstrated in a healthy human subject and the results are compared to those of other studies. The proposed method was validated with simulated data and strain estimates from experimentally measured DENSE data, which were compared to the strain calculation from a conventional two-slice acquisition.
Conclusion:
This analytical method reduces the need to acquire data from adjacent slices when calculating regional Lagrangian strains and can effectively reduce the long scan time by a factor of two
Thermodynamics and Phase Transitions of Electrolytes on Lattices with Different Discretization Parameters
Lattice models are crucial for studying thermodynamic properties in many
physical, biological and chemical systems. We investigate Lattice Restricted
Primitive Model (LRPM) of electrolytes with different discretization parameters
in order to understand thermodynamics and the nature of phase transitions in
the systems with charged particles. A discretization parameter is defined as a
number of lattice sites that can be occupied by each particle, and it allows to
study the transition from the discrete picture to the continuum-space
description. Explicit analytic and numerical calculations are performed using
lattice Debye-H\"{u}ckel approach, which takes into account the formation of
dipoles, the dipole-ion interactions and correct lattice Coulomb potentials.
The gas-liquid phase separation is found at low densities of charged particles
for different types of lattices. The increase in the discretization parameter
lowers the critical temperature and the critical density, in agreement with
Monte Carlo computer simulations results. In the limit of infinitely large
discretization our results approach the predictions from the continuum model of
electrolytes. However, for the very fine discretization, where each particle
can only occupy one lattice site, the gas-liquid phase transitions are
suppressed by order-disorder phase transformations.Comment: Submitted to Molecular Physic
Towards real-time classification of astronomical transients
Exploration of time domain is now a vibrant area of research in astronomy, driven by the advent of digital synoptic sky surveys. While panoramic surveys can detect variable or transient events, typically some follow-up observations are needed; for short-lived phenomena, a rapid response is essential. Ability to automatically classify and prioritize transient events for follow-up studies becomes critical as the data rates increase. We have been developing such methods using the data streams from the Palomar-Quest survey, the Catalina Sky Survey and others, using the VOEventNet framework. The goal is to automatically classify transient events, using the new measurements, combined with archival data (previous and multi-wavelength measurements), and contextual information (e.g., Galactic or ecliptic latitude, presence of a possible host galaxy nearby, etc.); and to iterate them dynamically as the follow-up data come in (e.g., light curves or colors). We have been investigating Bayesian methodologies for classification, as well as discriminated follow-up to optimize the use of available resources, including Naive Bayesian approach, and the non-parametric Gaussian process regression. We will also be deploying variants of the traditional machine learning techniques such as Neural Nets and Support Vector Machines on datasets of reliably classified transients as they build up
An interface to retrieve personal memories using an iconic visual language
Relevant past events can be remembered when visualizing related pictures. The main difficulty is how to find these photos in a large personal collection. Query definition and image annotation are key issues to overcome this problem. The former is relevant due to the diversity of the clues provided by our memory when recovering a past moment and the later because images need to be annotated with information regarding those clues to be retrieved. Consequently, tools to recover past memories should deal carefully with these two tasks. This paper describes a user interface designed to explore pictures from personal memories. Users can query the media collection in several ways and for this reason an iconic visual language to define queries is proposed. Automatic and semi-automatic annotation is also performed using the image content and the audio information obtained when users show their images to others. The paper also presents the user interface evaluation based on tests with 58 participants
The determination of acetaminophen using a carbon nanotube: graphite-based electrode
The oxidation of acetaminophen was studied at a glassy carbon electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes and a graphite paste. Cyclic voltammety, differential pulse voltammetry and square wave voltammetry at various pH values, scan rates, and the effect of the ratio of nanotubes to graphite were investigated in order to optimize the parameters for the determination of acetaminophen. Square wave voltammetry is the most appropriate technique in giving a characteristic peak at 0.52 V at pH 5. The porous nanostructure of the electrode improves the surface area which results in an increase in the peak current. The voltammetric response is linear in the range between 75 and 2000 ng.mL−1, with standard deviations between 0.25 and 7.8%, and a limit of detection of 25 ng.mL−1. The method has been successfully applied to the analysis of acetaminophen in tablets and biological fluids
A technical assessment on photovoltaic power generation under varying weather profile – Northumbria university pilot
The output from Photovoltaic (PV) system’s is mostly dependent on the weather of the area in which it is installed and it is greatly influenced by the amount of sunlight, irradiance intensity and the time of day (sunny or daylight hours). Consequently, climate in the United Kingdom (UK) does not allow the production of consistent power throughout the year. This paper discusses and analyses the realistic weather data in the UK to provide the accurate climate factor for solar energy production. The present study aims to help decision-makers take reasonable steps to provide solar energy production solutions while considering the weather benefits and as well as abnormalities. This paper tends to provide a comparative analysis of actual and theoretical performance conducted over a one-year monitoring cycle. The paper starts with an overview of performance co-efficient followed by the details of energy produced during various weather periods to investigate the reliability of depending solely on solar. A 75% decline in winter output relative to the summer and an energy generation of only 1.8% on the darkest day of the year compared to the brightest day are reported
Radius and chirality dependent conformation of polymer molecule at nanotube interface
Temperature dependent conformations of linear polymer molecules adsorbed at
carbon nanotube (CNT) interfaces are investigated through molecule dynamics
simulations. Model polyethylene (PE) molecules are shown to have selective
conformations on CNT surface, controlled by atomic structures of CNT lattice
and geometric coiling energy. PE molecules form entropy driven assembly
domains, and their preferred wrapping angles around large radius CNT (40, 40)
reflect the molecule configurations with energy minimums on a graphite plane.
While PE molecules prefer wrapping on small radius armchair CNT (5, 5)
predominantly at low temperatures, their configurations are shifted to larger
wrapping angle ones on a similar radius zigzag CNT (10, 0). A nematic
transformation around 280 K is identified through Landau-deGennes theory, with
molecule aligning along tube axis in extended conformationsComment: 19 pages, 7 figure2, submitted to journa
The angiogenic factor platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor/thymidine phosphorylase is up-regulated in breast cancer epithelium and endothelium.
Tumour angiogenesis is a complex multistep process regulated by a number of angiogenic factors. One such factor, platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor has recently been shown to be thymidine phosphorylase (TP). TP catalyses the reversible phosphorylation of thymidine to deoxyribose-1-phosphate and thymine. Although known to be generally elevated in tumours, the expression of this enzyme in breast carcinomas is unknown. Therefore, we used ribonuclease protection assays and immunohistochemistry to examine the expression of TP in 240 primary breast carcinomas. Nuclear and/or cytoplasmic TP expression was observed in the neoplastic tumour epithelium in 53% of tumours. Immunoreactivity was also often present in the stromal, inflammatory and endothelial cell elements. Although endothelial cell staining was usually focal, immunoreactivity was observed in 61% of tumours and was prominent at the tumour periphery, an area where tumour angiogenesis is most active. Tumour cell TP expression was significantly inversely correlated with grade (P = 0.05) and size (P = 0.003) but no association was observed with other tumour variables. These findings suggest that TP is important for remodelling the existing vasculature early in tumour development, consistent with its chemotactic non-mitogenic properties, and that additional angiogenic factors are more important for other angiogenic processes like endothelial cell proliferation. Relapse-free survival was higher in node-positive patients with elevated TP (P = 0.05) but not in other patient groups. This might be due to the potentiation of chemotherapeutic agents like methotrexate by TP. Therefore, this enzyme might be a prediction marker for response to chemotherapy
Intuitivno pretraživanje baze slike kao potpora označavanju slika
Image annotation is typically performed manually since automatic image annotation approaches have not matured yet to be used in practice. Consequently, image annotation is a labour intensive and time consuming task. In this paper, we show how an image browsing system can be employed to support efficient and effective (manual) annotation of image databases. In contrast to other approaches, which typically present images in a linear fashion, we employ a visualisation where images are arranged by mutual visual similarity. Since in this arrangement similar images are close to each other, they can easily be selected and annotated together. Organisation on a grid layout prevents image overlap and thus contributes to a clear presentation. Large image databases are handled through a hierarchical data structure where each image in the visualisation can correspond to a cluster of images that can be expanded by the user. Experimental results indicate that annotation can be performed faster on our proposed system.
