Conferencia impartida bajo el patrocinio del Vicerrectorado de Investigación y el Máster de Biotecnología AvanzadaRegenerative Medicine is an emerging field that combines basic research and clinical observations in order to identify the elements required to replace damaged tissues and organs in vivo and to stimulate the body's intrinsic regenerative capacity. Great benefits are expected in this field as researchers take advantage of the potential regenerative properties of both embryonic and adult stem cells, and more recently, of induced pluripotent stem cells. Bioengineered skin emerged mainly in response to a critical need for early permanent coverage of extensive burns. Later this technology was also applied to the treatment of chronic ulcers. Our group has established a humanized mouse model of skin grafting that involves the use of bioengineered human skin in immunodeficient mice. This model is suitable for the study of physiologic and pathologic cutaneous processes and the evaluation of treatment strategies for skin diseases, including protocols for gene and cell therapy and tissue engineering.Universidad de Málaga. Effects of project-based learning on students’ perceived motivation and engagement in level six english students at Universidad Simón Bolívar
Motivation and engagement in English as a foreign language (EFL) instruction have been recurrent concerns within language education. As a response to this, Project-based learning (PBL) has emerged as a prominent pedagogical approach for teaching English in higher education. This study aims to investigate the effects of implementing PBL on students’ perceived motivation and engagement in a level six English class at Universidad Simón Bolívar. Employing an exploratory mixed methods research design, specifically a convergent parallel mixed method approach, data was collected though a pre-/post-questionnaire and a student focus group. The quantitative data was statistically analyzed in three ways using: 1) a Likert-type bar chart, 2) a Dumbbell Plot chart, and 3) a Wilcoxon signed rank test. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the focus group data. The results of the study reveal positive effects following the implementation of PBL in various dimensions, including autonomy, recognition of the advantages of PBL, intrinsic motivation, and emotional and cognitive engagement. Additionally, other aspects such as interest in class materials, participation in class activities related to PBL, enhanced student confidence, reshaped perceptions of the English teacher, and a more positive view towards English and its importance were also found. While the study does not find evidence supporting a growth in either extrinsic or integrative motivation while analyzing the qualitative data, there were slight changes in these aspects in the quantitative data. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on effective pedagogical strategies in EFL contexts, offering insight into the impact of the use of PBL on student motivation and engagement in the Colombian context.MaestríaMagister en la Enseñanza del Ingle

Applicability of bioengineered human skin: from preclinical skin humanized mouse models to clinical regenerative therapies
Ongoing progress in the field of regenerative medicine, in combination with the development of tissue-engineered skin products, has opened new possibilities for the treatment of certain diseases in which current treatments are aimed at alleviating symptoms but are not able to get a permanent cure. Our laboratory has developed a fibrin-based bioengineered human skin that has been successfully used for permanent regenerative therapies in different situations in the clinic. Moreover, we have been able to stably regenerate human skin by orthotopic grafting of this skin equivalent onto the back of immunodeficient mice. The so-called skin-humanized mouse model system has permitted us to model several monogenic skin diseases, when keratinocytes and fibroblasts harboring the genetic defect were used. In most cases different gene therapy approaches for ex vivo correction of cells have proved effective in reverting the phenotype using this model. More importantly, the feasibility of the system has allowed us to generate a skin humanized mouse model for psoriasis, a common chronic inflammatory disease where the immune component has a pivotal role in the pathogenesis. Establishing reliable humanized animal models for skin diseases is necessary to gain a deeper knowledge of the pathogenesis and to develop novel therapeutic strategies. In this sense, the skin humanized mouse model developed in our laboratory meets the needs of this field of research. This work was supported by grant SAF 2010-16976

Effects of photodynamic therapy on dermal fibroblasts from xeroderma pigmentosum and Gorlin-Goltz syndrome patients
PDT is widely applied for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer premalignant
and malignant lesions (actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma and in
situ squamous cell carcinoma). In photodynamic therapy (PDT) the interaction
of a photosensitizer (PS), light and oxygen leads to the formation of reactive
oxygen species (ROS) and thus the selective tumor cells eradication. Xeroderma
pigmentosum (XP) and Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome (GS) patients are at high risk of
developing skin cancer in sun-exposed areas. Therefore, the use of PDT as a
preventive treatment may constitute a very promising therapeutic modality for
these syndromes. Given the demonstrated role of cancer associated fibroblasts
(CAFs) in tumor progression and the putative CAFs features of some cancerprone
genodermatoses fibroblasts, in this study, we have further characterized
the phenotype of XP and GS dermal fibroblasts and evaluated their response to
methyl-δ-aminolevulinic acid (MAL)-PDT compared to that of dermal fibroblasts
obtained from healthy donors. We show here that XP/GS fibroblasts display clear
features of CAFs and present a significantly higher response to PDT, even after
being stimulated with UV light, underscoring the value of this therapeutic approach
for these rare skin conditions and likely to other forms of skin cancer were CAFs

Molecular and Morphological Phylogenetic Analysis of Naupactus Dejean (Curculionidae: Entiminae) and Allied Genera: The Dilemma of Classification
Naupactus (Curculionidae: Entiminae) is the most speciose weevil genus of the tribe Naupactini. The main objective of this work is to recognize species groups within Naupactus and to analyze the relationships between this and other Neotropical genera. For this purpose, we compiled a combined data matrix of 60 terminal units corresponding to 40 species for which we recorded 812 molecular and morphological characters (763 and 49 respectively), which were analyzed by Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian analyses. The single tree obtained from each analysis was rooted with Cyrtomon inhalatus. The species of Naupactus were recovered as different monophyletic groups, some of them closer to other genera of Naupactini (Lanterius, Teratopactus, Pantomorus and Parapantomorus) than to species of the same genus. We conclude that Naupactus is non-monophyletic, even though most species can be recognized based on a particular combination of morphological characters, which are probably symplesiomorphic. To be consistent with the cladistic principles, some genera diversified in marginal areas of the Pantomorus-Naupactus complex should be synonymized with Naupactus; however, these nomenclatural changes may not ensure a generic definition based on synapomorphies. We prefer to be conservative about the current classification until more evidence is available. The only nomenclatural amendments proposed herein are the transference of Naupactus inermis Hustache to Lanterius and of N. setarius to Symmathetes.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
