c-axis Raman Scattering in MgB2: Observation of a Dirty-Limit Gap in the pi-bands
Raman scattering spectra from the ac-face of thick MgB2 single crystals were
measured in zz, xz and xx polarisations. In zz and xz polarisations a threshold
at around 29 cm^{-1} forms in the below Tc continuum but no pair-breaking peak
is seen, in contrast to the sharp pair-breaking peak at around 100 cm^{-1} seen
in xx polarisation. The zz and xz spectra are consistent with Raman scattering
from a dirty superconductor while the sharp peak in the xx spectra argues for a
clean system. Analysis of the spectra resolves this contradiction, placing the
larger and smaller gap magnitudes in the sigma and pi bands, and indicating
that relatively strong impurity scattering is restricted to the pi bands.Comment: Revised manuscript accepted for publication in Physical Review

Age and palaeoenvironment of Pliocene sediments, Cameron Inlet Formation, eastern Flinders Island, Tasmania: implications for southeastern Australian biostratigraphy
A previously unrecorded thin unit of very Early Pliocene calcareous sediments of the Cameron Inlet Formation from two auger holes in central Flinders Island, Tasmania, has yielded a very diverse fauna of benthic Foraminifera and enough planktonic forms to allow fine correlation with international biostratigraphic standards (N19, approximately 5.3–4.4 Ma, or Lower Opoitian in New Zealand terminology). Ostracods are also recorded. It is older than an earlier recorded sample from North Patriarch Drain a few kilometres away. It lies within the Kalimnan of southeastern Australian stage nomenclature and probably equivalent to 1985 Molluscan Assemblage XVI. The sediments and faunas accumulated in very shallow, fully marine conditions, initially with some possible estuarine aspect that faded with time. The fauna is of well-known species, dominated by Parredicta kalimnensis (Parr, 1939). Other abundant and diverse forms are elphidiids and cibicidids. Agglutinated forms are almost absent and miliolids are diverse but minor components. The fauna includes a new polymorphinid genus and species that will be described elsewhere. The samples contain a bewildering array of unilocular forms. Water temperature appears to have been about 12°C. The Kalimnan Stage may encompass the entire Pliocene and two substages may be identifiable
Carbon-substitution effect on the electronic properties of MgB single crystals
The electronic properties of the carbon substituted MgB single crystals
are reported. The carbon substitution drops T below 2 K. In-plane
resistivity shows a remarkable increase in residual resistivity by
C-substitution, while the change of in-plane/out-of-plane Hall coefficients is
rather small. Raman scattering spectra indicate that the E-phonon
frequency radically hardens with increasing the carbon-content, suggesting the
weakening of electron-phonon coupling. Another striking C-effect is the
increases of the second critical fields in both in-plane and out-of-plane
directions, accompanied by a reduction in the anisotropy ratio. The possible
changes in the electronic state and the origin of T-suppression by
C-substitution are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
Signature of Carrier-Induced Ferromagnetism in Ti_{1-x}Co_{x}O_{2-delta}: Exchange Interaction Between High-Spin Co 2+ and the Ti 3d Conduction Band
X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements were performed on thin-film
samples of rutile Ti_{1-x}Co_{x}O_{2-delta} to reveal the electronic structure.
The Co 2p core level spectra indicate that the Co ions take the high-spin Co 2+
configuration, consistent with substitution on the Ti site. The high spin state
and the shift due to the exchange splitting of the conduction band suggest
strong hybridization between carriers in the Ti 3d t2g band and the t2g states
of the high-spin Co 2+. These observations support the argument that room
temperature ferromagnetism in Ti_{1-x}Co_{x}O_{2-delta} is intrinsic.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Physical Review

Perceptual Pluralism
Perceptual systems respond to proximal stimuli by forming mental representations of distal stimuli. A central goal for the philosophy of perception is to characterize the representations delivered by perceptual systems. It may be that all perceptual representations are in some way proprietarily perceptual and differ from the representational format of thought (Dretske 1981; Carey 2009; Burge 2010; Block ms.). Or it may instead be that perception and cognition always trade in the same code (Prinz 2002; Pylyshyn 2003). This paper rejects both approaches in favor of perceptual pluralism, the thesis that perception delivers a multiplicity of representational formats, some proprietary and some shared with cognition. The argument for perceptual pluralism marshals a wide array of empirical evidence in favor of iconic (i.e., image-like, analog) representations in perception as well as discursive (i.e., language-like, digital) perceptual object representations
Colour Relations in Form
The orthodox monadic determination thesis holds that we represent colour relations by virtue of representing colours. Against this orthodoxy, I argue that it is possible to represent colour relations without representing any colours. I present a model of iconic perceptual content that allows for such primitive relational colour representation, and provide four empirical arguments in its support. I close by surveying alternative views of the relationship between monadic and relational colour representation
Troubles with Bayesianism: An introduction to the psychological immune system
A Bayesian mind is, at its core, a rational mind. Bayesianism is thus well-suited to predict and explain mental processes that best exemplify our ability to be rational.
