Writing the Resistance: A Palestinian Intellectual History, 1967-1974

This thesis explores the ideological work of the intellectuals involved in the Palestinian Resistance, and the Palestinian Liberation Organization more specifically, from 1967 to 1974. In particular, it sets out to answer the following question: What were the changing roles of the intellectuals involved in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) from 1967 to 1974, particularly in relation to anti-colonial politics, and why did they change? Being a particularly fertile time in Palestinian resistance history, many of those involved in the movement had the opportunity to explore new ideological possibilities for resistance and worked to link their movement ideologically to revolutionary resistance movements taking place globally at that time. The 1967 defeat was particularly poignant for Palestinian and Arab intellectuals, as it demonstrated to them that the work of the Ba'thists and Arab nationalists during the 1950s and 1960s had not created the necessary changes to liberate Palestine and, in their opinions, to liberate the entire society. Such changes, the intellectuals had hoped, would bring forth a larger revolution for the Arab world. With criticisms of local regimes, the intervention of external governments, and Zionism itself, they worked to reshape Palestinian resistance and reimagine Arab liberation. Yet due to fractured relationships and general disunity, it became difficult to create the type of resistance they had imagined. Three factors have seemed constraining: the shortcomings of the intellectuals, external factors, and problems in the ideas they developed for their society. Along with presenting the research question and hypothesis and defining key terms, the Introduction provides a literature review. The rest of the thesis chapters are arranged thematically and chronologically. Chapter One provides historical links between this newer generation of intellectuals and the older generation at the end of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of the Mandate period. In Chapter Two, the initial reactions to the 1967 Defeat and the unique opportunity the PLO and its leaders had following it are analysed. Chapter Three considers the factionalism that took place within the PLO and the various ideological streams that were born of this. Chapter Four explicates the particular reasons why the ideologies they developed were troubled from the start, as well as some of the fundamental ironies within them. In addition to the possibility that their ideas did not suit the needs of the population in part because they did not have mass support, Chapter Five raises the notion that the efforts of the PLO's intellectuals may have been overly quixotic, as some have argued. The Conclusion suggests that, in many ways, the period ends as it begins, with their dreams of revolution as dreams and their criticisms of the society and each other as they were after soon after the Defeat

Chlordiazepoxide (CDP), one of a number of drugs in\u27 the class Ijnown as the benzodiazepines, is known to have central muscle relaxant effects , anticonvulsant effects against electroconvulsive shock and chemical agents, depressive effects on the duration of electrical afterdischarges in the limbic system, and attenuation of fear in avoidance and conflict situations • It also has been found to have a suppressive effect on a number of aggressive behavioral responses. CDP was found to depress mouse killing in rats (Loiselle and Caparell, 1966), to have taming effects on vicious cynomolgus monkeys (Heise and Boff, 1961), to produce calming of septal rats (Horovitz, Furgiuele, Brannick, Burke and Craver, 1963); to reduce shock-induced fighting of mice (Stille, 1962), and to lessen fighting of previously isolated mice (Cole and Wolf, 1966). A Educação Física e as práticas corporais alternativas: a produção científica do curso de graduação em Educação Física da UNESP - Rio Claro de 1987 a 1997

A relação entre a Educação Física e as práticas corporais alternativas não é nova. Embora existam diferentes evidências para a constatação de tal afirmativa, esta pesquisa procurou analisar uma em particular, ou seja, a produção científica do Curso de Graduação em Educação Física da UNESP - Campus de Rio Claro, no que diz respeito aos trabalhos de formatura produzidos pelos alunos no período de 1987-1997. Objetivando a organização bibliográfica desse material que envolve a discussão em torno das práticas corporais alternativas no referido Curso de Educação Física, essa fase da investigação esteve centralizada no teor das pesquisas realizadas pelos futuros formandos. Os dados foram coletados ano a ano, sendo ressaltados os trabalhos em que a preocupação principal consistiu numa análise voltada para métodos de educação do corpo considerados alternativos como a Antiginástica de Thérèse Bertherat, a Eutonia de Gerda Alexander, o Método Feldenkrais de Moshe Feldenkrais, entre outros e termos comumente utilizados neste meio como consciência corporal, expressão corporal etc. Grosso modo, constatou-se que os trabalhos de formatura produzidos ao longo desses dez anos, que refletem temáticas pertinentes às práticas corporais alternativas como objeto de investigação, apontam ora para um questionamento quanto à possibilidade de absorção das práticas corporais alternativas pela Educação Física e pelo conteúdo por ela tradicionalmente desenvolvido, ora para sua incorporação, explícita no ideário teórico-prático dos alunos do curso

Developing a Community Innovation Grant in Response to Increasing Rural Critical Incidents in Agricultural Mental Health and Wellbeing, Community Trauma, and Natural Disasters

Spink Area Support Network (SASN) is a skilled team of community volunteers that facilitate rural critical incident response services in an effort to prevent a critical incident and offer structured support during the aftermath. SASN was developed in response to identified gaps in rural critical incident response and risk reduction through prevention in Spink County, South Dakota. SASN utilizes a collaborative team approach to fill in gaps between first responder silos and establish community interventions by providing support and resources while utilizing critical incident stress management methods. SASN requires funding to maintain response resources, training, prevention education, and follow-up services. The capstone project will produce the requirements to apply for the Bush Foundation Community Innovation Grant as a partnership and funding source. The grant requires a strategic plan, needs assessment, data collection, evaluation, and sustainability plan. Some of the footwork such as the stakeholder engagement, board, strategic plan, and needs assessment was established in the pilot year, 2019-2020. The results analysis indicates the need for a network of skilled volunteers to mobilize during events of agricultural mental health and wellbeing crises, community trauma, and natural disasters. The subsequent data that was collected for this grant had similar findings with a special focus on COVID-19 response. Resources that were developed from the current analysis are an area resource directory, crisis and COVID-19 prevention resources, and the SASN Critical Response Team (SASN CRT) manual. With these resources and the strategic plan in place the grant was submitted with all requirements and awaiting award notice. Rural, frontier populations in South Dakota will benefit from grant funding for SASN to increase efficacy of rural critical incident response

Wahrgenommene Qualität im Kontext von modischen Aspekten, Preisleistung und Service als Determinante des Kundenurteils im Textilversandhandel: Empirische Befunde zur Entwicklung eines integrativen Skalensystems

Based on the influential works on quality by Garvin (1984) we postulate, additional to perceived quality, the existence of aesthetical as well as serviceability aspects which are both to be considered as independent determinants of customers' overall judgement on a supplier. Additionally, due to its consistent connection to quality ratings (cf. Rao & Monroe, 1989), price has to be taken into account. Mail-order fashion retail was chosen as an area of study on account of the importance of aesthetic quality in its products(Abraham-Murali & Littrell, 1995) and because serviceability is considered an essential determinant of its success (Klassen & Glynn, 1992). Based on previous work, short scales for the measurement of the relevant constructs are derived and tested on a sample of customers using mail-order services (N = 1901). For price-performance ratio, one single item is used. The reliabilities of the scales measuring perceived quality (Alpha = .83), aesthetics (sportiness: Alpha = .67, elegance: Alpha = .58), serviceability (Alpha = .81) and the overall rating of the supplier (Alpha = .77) are promising but some are still in need of improvement. Altogether, these predictors explain 47% of the variance of customers' total judgement in a multiple regression. All of our predictors reach significance (p < .005): Perceived quality (Beta = .46), sportiness (Beta = .12), elegance (Beta = .08), serviceability (Beta = .14) and price-performance ratio (Beta = 16). There are no problematic collinearities. Differential regression weights for perceived quality and sportiness for people under and above 50 years indicate the scales' content validity. In conclusion, the results suggest an overall successful operationalization and substantiate the important and independent contribution of several quality subdimensions explaining customers' total judgement on a supplier.Aufbauend auf den einflussreichen Arbeiten von Garvin (1984) zur Qualität wird postuliert, dass neben der wahrgenommenen Qualität(perceived quality) auch ein ästhetischer (aesthetics) sowie ein serviceorientierter (serviceability) Qualitätsaspekt existieren, die als eigenständige Determinanten der Gesamtbewertung eines Warenanbieters durch den Kunden anzusehen sind. Der Preis ist dabei aufgrund seiner konsistenten Verbindung zur Qualitätseinschätzung (vgl. Rao & Monroe, 1989) ebenfalls zu berücksichtigen. Zur Untersuchung des Einflusses der Qualitätsdimensionen auf das Konsumentenurteil wird der Modeversandhandel gewählt, da hier für die Produkte die ästhetische Qualitätsdimension stark ausgeprägt ist (Abraham-Murali & Littrell, 1995) und der Service als eine wesentliche Erfolgsdeterminante angesehen wird (Klassen & Glynn, 1992). Aufbauend auf bisherigen Forschungsarbeiten werden kurze Skalen für die relevanten Konstrukte abgeleitet und an einer Stichprobe von Versandhandelskäufern (N = 1901) getestet. Für Preisleistung wird ein Einzelitem verwendet. Die Messgenauigkeiten der Skalen für wahrgenommene Qualität (Alpha = .83), ästhetische Aspekte (Sportlichkeit: Alpha = .67; Eleganz: Alpha = .58), Service (Alpha = .81) und Gesamtbewertung des Anbieters (Alpha = .77) erweisen sich als vielversprechend aber teilweise noch als verbesserungsbedürftig. Insgesamt können in einer multiplen Regression 47% der Varianz im Gesamturteil des Kunden durch die Prädiktoren vorhergesagt werden, die alle Signifikanz (p < .005) erreichen: Wahrgenommene Qualität (Beta = .46), Sportlichkeit (Beta = .12), Eleganz (Beta = .08), Service (Beta = .14), Preisleistung (Beta = .16). Es treten keine problematischen Kollinearitäten auf. Differentielle Regressionsgewichte für wahrgenommene Qualität und Sportlichkeit für Personen unter und über 50 Jahren sprechen für die Inhaltsvalidität der Skalen. Die Befunde deuten auf eine insgesamt gelungene Operationalisierung hin und untermauern den bedeutsamen und eigenständigen Erklärungsbeitrag verschiedener Qualitätssubdimensionen für die Gesamtbewertung eines Warenanbieters durch seine Kunden

Effective Chiral Lagrangians with an SU(3)-Broken Vector-Meson Sector

The accuracy of effective chiral lagrangians including vector-mesons as (hidden symmetry) gauge fields is shown to be improved by taking into account SU(3)-breaking in the vector-meson sector. The masses, $M_V$, and couplings to the photon field and pseudoscalar pairs, $f_{V\gamma}$ and $g_{VPP}$, are all consistently described in terms of two parameters, which also fit the values for the pseudoscalar decay-constants, $f_P$, and charge radii, $$.
