Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is often absent or at low levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with previous SARS-CoV-2-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). This has led to speculation that SARS-CoV-2-associated GBS is more likely mediated by post-infectious immunity or a parainfection. This understanding has influenced the development of treatment regimens for SARS-CoV-2-associated GBS. This paper reports our experience with four Chinese patients with SARS-CoV-2-associated GBS who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the CSF. They developed symptoms of peripheral nerve damage 4–15 days after fever and confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, all of whom presented with progressive weakness of both lower limbs; three with autonomic nerve function impairment such as constipation and urination disorder; and one with polycranial neuritis and Miller–Fisher syndrome. Three patients were tested for anti-ganglioside antibodies, and one tested positive for GD1a-IgG. Four patients recovered well after treatment with anti-viral drugs combined with intravenous immunoglobulin. The present results showed that SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be detected via mNGS in the CSF of some patients with SARS-CoV-2-associated GBS, suggesting that SARS-CoV-2-associated GBS may have multiple pathogeneses

Effects of Transition Metal Ions on the Colour of Blue-Green Beryl

    No full text
This study reports the effects of transition metal ions on the colour of blue-green beryl. Industrial cameras were used to measure colour in the CIELAB colour space. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy were used for characterization. The d–d transition of Fe3+ with sixfold coordination, the O2−→Fe3+ charge transfer, and the charge transition of binuclear metal M–M complexes formed by [Fe2(OH)4]2+ in the channel caused a yellow tone, whereas the charge transfer of Fe2+/Fe3+ with sixfold coordination caused a blue-green tone. The chroma of blue-green beryl was negatively correlated with the ratio of Cs+Mn to Fe contents. The lightness of blue-green beryl was negatively correlated with the total content of transition metal ions

Time to Surgery Affects Wound Healing of Ankle Fractures

Category: Trauma; Ankle Introduction/Purpose: Ankle fractures are very common. Most unstable ankle fractures require surgical intervention in order to obtain better clinical outcomes. However, there is still conflicting evidence about the implications of time to surgery on post- operative wound complications. Purpose of study: To investigate if early or delayed surgery results in difference in wound complications in patients who underwent surgical intervention for ankle fracture. Methods: A retrospective review of 238 ankle fracture cases treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) from October 28, 2016, through May 12, 2022 was completed at our institution. Patients were divided into 4 groups based on the time to surgery. In group 1, surgery was within a week. In group 2, surgery was in 2nd week. In group 3, surgery was in 3rd week. In group 4, surgery was after 3 weeks. Wound complications including minor wound complication and wound infection were investigated. The other factors including BMI, smoking, diabetes, etc. were investigated as well to avoid confounding bias. Since most of patients accepted surgery either in first 4 days (early surgery group) or between 10 to 20 days (delayed surgery group) in this series of patients. We also analyzed those two time points. Data was analyzed using STATA. Results: 238 patients with ankle fracture were analyzed. 36, 96, 71 and 35 patients were included in group 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. For BMI, smoking, and diabetes, no significant difference among 4 groups. The rate of minor wound complications in group 1, 2, 3 and 4 was 13.8%, 12.5%, 8.5% and 0%. The rate of wound infection in group 1, 2, 3 and 4 was 5.6%, 3.1%, 1.4% and 0%. For minor wound complication, there was significant decrease in group 4, as compared with group 1 and group 2 (p < 0.05). Interestingly, in term of early vs delayed surgery, both infection rate (13.3% vs 2.8%) and minor wound complication rate (33.3% vs 10.8%) significantly decreased in the delayed surgery group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Delayed ORIF of ankle fracture resulted in decreased both minor wound complication rate and infection rate

Edible Bird's Nest, an Asian Health Food Supplement, Possesses Moisturizing Effect by Regulating Expression of Filaggrin in Skin Keratinocyte

Edible bird's nest (EBN) has been consumed as a Chinese delicacy for hundreds of years; the functions of which have been proposed to prevent lung disease, strengthen immune response, and restore skin youthfulness. To support the skin function of EBN, the water extract and the enzymatic digest of EBN with enriched digested peptides were tested in cultured keratinocyte, HaCaT cell line. The effects of EBN extract and digest in inducing proteins crucial for skin moisturizing were determined in both in vitro and ex vivo models. In cultured keratinocytes, the expressions of S100-fused type proteins contributing to skin barrier function in the stratum corneum, e.g. filaggrin and filaggrin-2, were determined in both mRNA and protein levels, which were markedly induced in the treatment of EBN extract or digest. The EBN-induced gene transcriptions of filaggrin and filaggrin-2 were mediated by activation of p38 MAPK pathway and various transcription factors, e.g. GATA3, PPAR alpha, PPAR beta, and PPAR gamma: these transcriptional factors were markedly activated by the digested products of EBN, as compared to the extract, in cultured keratinocytes. By using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the EBN-treated keratinocyte was shown to have more liquid-like morphology, as compared to a control cell. The EBN digest showed better induction on these moisturizing effects as compared to the extract. These lines of evidence therefore suggested the water moisturizing effect of EBN in skin function

Structural change and the environment:a case study of China's production recipe and carbon dioxide emissions

We use the input-output tables in constant prices extended with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for examining the development of China, a country undergoing rapid growth. We undertake this empirical analysis in terms of a new and therefore rarely applied methodology: instead of average coefficients characterizing the average (old) technology operating throughout a particular reporting year, we calculate marginal coefficientsin monetary and CO2 termsthat capture the additional (new) technology installed after that year. Marginal coefficients are increasingly recommended in the literature for applications such as consequential life cycle assessment, where they are supposed to lead to more realistic results, especially in prospective analyses. Our work provides a first, broad overview about the magnitude and distribution of these coefficients across recent years in China's rapidly growing economy for which marginal coefficients could be expected to differ greatly from average coefficients. We find that (1) marginal coefficients can differ substantially from average coefficients, thus lending support to the need expressed in the literature for coining consequential life cycle assessment (LCA) and similar prospective assessment in marginal rather than average terms; (2) marginal CO2 emissions coefficients differ more from their average counterparts than marginal monetary coefficients, showing that for China, within-sector technological solutions to emissions abatement have played a more important role than the reorganization of supply structures; and (3) there exists considerable scatter and variation of marginal coefficients across years, which to a certain extent precludes the identification of clear temporal and sectoral trends
