    Electromagnetic counterparts of high-frequency gravitational waves in a rotating laboratory frame system and their detection

    We consider the perturbative photon flows (PPFs, i.e., electromagnetic (EM) counterparts) generated by the EM resonance response to high-frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) with additional polarization states in a rotating laboratory frame system. It is found that when the propagating direction of the HFGWs and the symmetrical axis of the laboratory frame system are the same, the PPFs have the maximum value. In this case, using the rotation (the rotation of azimuth ϕ\phi) of the EM detection system, all six possible polarization states of the HFGWs can be separated and displayed. For the current experimental conditions, it is quite prospective to detect the PPFs generated by the HFGWs predicted in the braneworld models, the primordial black hole theories and the interaction mechanism between astrophysical plasma and intense EM radiation, etc., due to the large amplitudes (or high spectral densities) and spectral characteristics of these HFGWs.     Testing the spatial geometry of the universe with TianQin: the prospect of using supermassive black hole binaries

    The determination of the spatial geometry of the universe plays an important role in modern cosmology. Any deviation from the cosmic curvature ΩK=0\Omega_K=0 would have a profound impact on the primordial inflation paradigm and fundamental physics. In this paper, we carry out a systematic study of the prospect of measuring cosmic curvature with the inspiral signal of supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) that could be detected with TianQin. The study is based on a cosmological-model-independent method that extended the application of gravitational wave (GW) standard sirens in cosmology. By comparing the distances from future simulated GW events and simulated H(z)H(z) data, we evaluate if TianQin would produce robust constraints on the cosmic curvature parameter Ωk\Omega_{k}. More specifically, we consider 3-yr to 10-yr observations of supermassive black hole binaries with total masses ranging from 103M10^{3}M_\odot to 107M10^{7}M_\odot. Our results show that in the future, with the synergy of 10-yr high-quality observations, we can tightly constrain the curvature parameter at the level of 1σ1\sigma Ωk=0.002±0.061\Omega_k=-0.002\pm0.061. Moreover, our findings indicate that the total mass of SMBHB does influence the estimation of cosmic curvature, implied by the analysis performed on different subsamples of gravitational wave data. Therefore, TianQin is expected to provide a powerful and competitive probe of the spatial geometry of the universe, compared to future spaced-based detectors such as DECIGO.Comment: This article has been accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    A role of brassinosteroids in early fruit development in cucumber

    Brassinosteroids (BRs) are essential for many biological processes in plants, however, little is known about their roles in early fruit development. To address this, BR levels were manipulated through the application of exogenous BRs (24-epibrassinolide, EBR) or a BR biosynthesis inhibitor (brassinazole, Brz) and their effects on early fruit development, cell division, and expression of cyclin and cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) genes were examined in two cucumber cultivars that differ in parthenocarpic capacity. The application of EBR induced parthenocarpic growth accompanied by active cell division in Jinchun No. 4, a cultivar without parthenocarpic capacity, whereas Brz treatment inhibited fruit set and, subsequently, fruit growth in Jinchun No. 2, a cultivar with natural parthenocarpic capacity, and this inhibitory effect could be rescued by the application of EBR. RT-PCR analysis showed both pollination and EBR induced expression of cell cycle-related genes (CycA, CycB, CycD3;1, CycD3;2, and CDKB) after anthesis. cDNA sequences for CsCycD3;1 and CsCycD3;2 were isolated through PCR amplification. Both CsCycD3;1 and CsCycD3;2 transcripts were up-regulated by EBR treatment and pollination but strongly repressed by Brz treatment. Meanwhile, BR6ox1 and SMT transcripts, two genes involved in BR synthesis, exhibited feedback regulation. These results strongly suggest that BRs play an important role during early fruit development in cucumber

    Enhancement of cisplatin sensitivity in lewis lung carcinoma by liposome-mediated delivery of a survivin mutant

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A high concentration of cisplatin (CDDP) induces apoptosis in many tumor cell lines. CDDP has been administered by infusion to avoid severe toxicity. Recently, it has been reported that changes in survivin expression or function may lead to tumor sensitization to chemical and physical agents. The aim of this study was to determine whether a dominant-negative mouse survivin mutant could enhance the anti-tumor activity of CDDP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A plasmid encoding the phosphorylation-defective dominant-negative mouse survivin threonine 34→alanine mutant (survivin T34A) complexed to a DOTAP-chol liposome (Lip-mS) was administered with or without CDDP in Lewis Lung Carcinoma (LLC) cells and in mice bearing LLC tumors, and the effects on apoptosis, tumor growth and angiogenesis were assessed. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA), and a value of <it>P </it>< 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>LLC cells treated with a combination of Lip-mS and CDDP displayed increased apoptosis compared with those treated with Lip-mS or CDDP alone. In mice bearing LLC tumors and treated with intravenous injections of Lip-mS and/or CDDP, combination treatment significantly reduced the mean tumor volume compared with either treatment alone. Moreover, the antitumor effect of Lip-mS combined with CDDP was greater than their anticipated additive effects.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These data suggest that the dominant-negative survivin mutant, survivin T34A, sensitized LLC cells to chemotherapy of CDDP. The synergistic antitumor activity of the combination treatment may in part result from an increase in the apoptosis of tumor cells, inhibition of tumor angiogenesis and induction of a tumor-protective immune response.</p

    Optimized antimicrobial and antiproliferative activities of titanate nanofibers containing silver

    Titanate nanofibers containing silver have been demonstrated through the experiments reported herein to have effective antifungal and antiproliferative activities in the presence of UV light. The titanate nanofibers containing silver can be fabricated by means of ion exchange followed by a topochemical process in an environment suitable for reductive reactions. Excellent antibacterial, antifungal, and antiproliferative activities could be demonstrated by both Ag2Ti5O11 · xH2O and Ag/titanate (UV light irradiation) due to their unique structures and compositions, which have photocatalytic activities to generate reactive oxygen species and capabilities to continuously release the silver ions. Therefore these materials have the potential to produce a membrane for the treatment of superficial malignant tumor, esophageal cancer, or cervical carcinoma. They may also hold utility if incorporated into a coating on stents in moderate and advanced stage esophageal carcinoma or for endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage. These approaches may significantly reduce infections, inhibit tumor growth, and importantly, improve quality of life and prolong survival time for patients with tumors

    Effects of different starch sources on Bacillus spp. in intestinal tract and expression of intestinal development related genes of weanling piglets

    The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different starch sources on Bacillus spp. in intestinal tract and expression of intestinal development related genes of weanling piglets. Twenty-eight PIC male piglets were divided into four homogeneous groups according to initial body weight (similar birth and parity, weaned at 21 ± 1.5 days). Diets for the four treatments consisted of corn starch, wheat starch, tapioca starch and pea starch with the determined ratio for amylose to amylopectin of 0.21, 0.24, 0.12 and 0.52 respectively. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was applied to: (1) detect genomic DNA of Bacillus and to quantify the number of Bacillus in the intestinal tract chyme of piglets with the primers and probe which designed based on the 16S rRNA sequences of maximum species of Bacillus on GenBank; (2) measure the mRNA level of glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2), insulin-like growth factors 1 (IGF-1) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in duodenum, jejunum and ileum. Results showed that the number of Baciilus and the percentage based on all bacteria in the whole intestinal content of piglets fed pea starch was highest in all groups (P < 0.05). There was no significant differance on copy numbers for all bacteria and Bacillus in the whole intestinal tract of piglets between the corn starch group and wheat starch group (P > 0.05). In addition, the expression level of GLP-2, IGF-1 mRNA in jejunum and ileum of pea starch treatment (the high amylose/amylopectin ratio) were increased while the tapioca starch decreased their mRNA level significantly compared to other three treatments (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference for the mRNA level of EGF in each group. The present study revealed that high amylose/amylopectin ratio of starches significantly enhanced the numbers of Bacillus in all segments of intestine and the mRNA level of intestinal development related genes
