    Some Recent Results on Pair Correlation Functions and Susceptibilities in Exactly Solvable Models

    Using detailed exact results on pair-correlation functions of Z-invariant Ising models, we can write and run algorithms of polynomial complexity to obtain wavevector-dependent susceptibilities for a variety of Ising systems. Reviewing recent work we compare various periodic and quasiperiodic models, where the couplings and/or the lattice may be aperiodic, and where the Ising couplings may be either ferromagnetic, or antiferromagnetic, or of mixed sign. We present some of our results on the square-lattice fully-frustrated Ising model. Finally, we make a few remarks on our recent works on the pentagrid Ising model and on overlapping unit cells in three dimensions and how these works can be utilized once more detailed results for pair correlations in, e.g., the eight-vertex model or the chiral Potts model or even three-dimensional Yang-Baxter integrable models become available.Comment: LaTeX2e using iopart.cls, 10 pages, 5 figures (5 eps files), Dunk Island conference in honor of 60th birthday of A.J.     Photoluminescence revealed higher order plasmonic resonance modes and their unexpected frequency blue shifts in silver-coated silica nanoparticle antennas

    © 2019 by the authors. Higher order plasmonic resonance modes and their frequency blue shifts in silver-coated silica nanoparticle antennas are studied. Synthesizing them with a wet chemistry method, silica (SiO2) nanoparticles were enclosed within silver shells with different thicknesses. A size-dependent Drude model was used to model the plasmonic shells and their optical losses. Two higher order plasmonic resonances were identified for each case in these simulations. The photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) experimental results, in good agreement with their simulated values, confirmed the presence of those two higher order resonant modes and their resonance frequencies. When compared with pure metallic Ag nanoparticles, size-induced blue shifts were observed in these resonance frequencies

    Isomonodromic deformation theory and the next-to-diagonal correlations of the anisotropic square lattice Ising model

    In 1980 Jimbo and Miwa evaluated the diagonal two-point correlation function of the square lattice Ising model as a Ï„\tau-function of the sixth Painlev\'e system by constructing an associated isomonodromic system within their theory of holonomic quantum fields. More recently an alternative isomonodromy theory was constructed based on bi-orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with regular semi-classical weights, for which the diagonal Ising correlations arise as the leading coefficient of the polynomials specialised appropriately. Here we demonstrate that the next-to-diagonal correlations of the anisotropic Ising model are evaluated as one of the elements of this isomonodromic system or essentially as the Cauchy-Hilbert transform of one of the bi-orthogonal polynomials.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur

    Retinal Changes in a Mutant Form of Goldfish with Megalophthalmia

    The retinal changes of a mutant strain of goldfish with megalophthalmia were studied by histology, electron microscopy and biochemistry. Changes in the morphology of the pigment epithelium, decrease in number of photoreceptors, thinning out of retinal layers and the existence of spaces in the retina were all features as the eyes grew in size. Invasion of macrophages was also evident in the retina. A decrease in leucine uptake per milligram of retina was also detected as the eye grew beyond 0.8 millilitre in volume. These changes, although related to volume changes (i.e., growth) of the eyes, were found to have little relationship with increase of intraocular pressure as intraocular pressures in the growing eyes of the mutant strain did not change much. Goldfish from a control strain with similar eye volumes and sizes (ages) were used for comparison and similar changes as in the mutant were not apparent

    Myocardial Tissue Characterization: Fat, Hemorrhage & Edema - Poster presentationTo determine the feasibility of measurements of transverse relaxation times for assessment of tissue iron overload at high field, we compared results of determinations of R2 and R2* using breathhold multi-echo spin-echo (MESE) and multi-echo gradient echo (MEGE) sequences, respectively, at 3T and at 1.5T in normal subjects and patients with thalassaemia major. Our results, the first reported measurements of R2 at both 3T and 1.5T in iron overloaded patients, demonstrate significant correlations in heart and liver at the two field strengths.     Three-Dimensional Vertex Model in Statistical Mechanics, from Baxter-Bazhanov Model

    We find that the Boltzmann weight of the three-dimensional Baxter-Bazhanov model is dependent on four spin variables which are the linear combinations of the spins on the corner sites of the cube and the Wu-Kadanoff duality between the cube and vertex type tetrahedron equations is obtained explicitly for the Baxter-Bazhanov model. Then a three-dimensional vertex model is obtained by considering the symmetry property of the weight function, which is corresponding to the three-dimensional Baxter-Bazhanov model. The vertex type weight function is parametrized as the dihedral angles between the rapidity planes connected with the cube. And we write down the symmetry relations of the weight functions under the actions of the symmetry group GG of the cube. The six angles with a constrained condition, appeared in the tetrahedron equation, can be regarded as the six spectrums connected with the six spaces in which the vertex type tetrahedron equation is defined.Comment: 29 pages, latex, 8 pasted figures (Page:22-29

    Clusters of circulating tumor cells traverse capillary-sized vessels

    Multicellular aggregates of circulating tumor cells (CTC clusters) are potent initiators of distant organ metastasis. However, it is currently assumed that CTC clusters are too large to pass through narrow vessels to reach these organs. Here, we present evidence that challenges this assumption through the use of microfluidic devices designed to mimic human capillary constrictions and CTC clusters obtained from patient and cancer cell origins. Over 90% of clusters containing up to 20 cells successfully traversed 5- to 10-μm constrictions even in whole blood. Clusters rapidly and reversibly reorganized into single-file chain-like geometries that substantially reduced their hydrodynamic resistances. Xenotransplantation of human CTC clusters into zebrafish showed similar reorganization and transit through capillary-sized vessels in vivo. Preliminary experiments demonstrated that clusters could be disrupted during transit using drugs that affected cellular interaction energies. These findings suggest that CTC clusters may contribute a greater role to tumor dissemination than previously believed and may point to strategies for combating CTC cluster-initiated metastasis
