Physiological and cell ultrastructure disturbances in wheat seedlings generated by Chenopodium murale hairy root exudate.
Chenopodium murale L. is an invasive weed species significantly interfering with wheat crop. However, the complete nature of its allelopathic influence on crops is not yet fully understood. In the present study, the focus is made on establishing the relation between plant morphophysiological changes and oxidative stress, induced by allelopathic extract. Phytotoxic medium of C. murale hairy root clone R5 reduced the germination rate (24% less than control value) of wheat cv. Nataša seeds, as well as seedling growth, diminishing shoot and root length significantly, decreased total chlorophyll content, and induced abnormal root gravitropism. The R5 treatment caused cellular structural abnormalities, reflecting on the root and leaf cell shape and organization. These abnormalities mostly included the increased number of mitochondria and reorganization of the vacuolar compartment, changes in nucleus shape, and chloroplast organization and distribution. The most significant structural changes were observed in cell wall in the form of amoeboid protrusions and folds leading to its irregular shape. These structural alterations were accompanied by an oxidative stress in tissues of treated wheat seedlings, reflected as increased level of H2O2 and other ROS molecules, an increase of radical scavenging capacity and total phenolic content. Accordingly, the retardation of wheat seedling growth by C. murale allelochemicals may represent a consequence of complex activity involving both cell structure alteration and physiological processes. This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Protoplasma. Wpływ systemu uprawy i odchwaszczania na plon i jakość włókna lnianego
Fibrous flax, despite its many different uses, is currently growing within a relatively small area, mainly because of the low production margin. This study shows possible approaches to the reduce production costs of flax fibre by 424 PLN per hectare as a result of no-tillage cultivation and direct sowing. No such research on flax fibre production has been conducted so far. The study (carried in 2011-2012) covered highly differentiated temperature and precipitation conditions. The yields of homomorphic fibre in a dry year were higher than in a year with optimum precipitation in the no-till system comparing to conventional tillage. The application of Chisel 75WG increased the yield of fibre regardless of the weather and cultivation system and was the result of both straw yield and fibre content increase. Tillage systems and herbicides differentiated the length and linear density of homomorphic fibre and impurity content, whereas the elongation at break and tenacity did not depend on the cultivation method.
W próbkach oznaczono zawartość materii organicznej, tempo respiracji, pH i przewodność elektrolityczną. The functioning of soils strongly depends on the activity of the soil microbial communities and their ability to withstand different environmental stresses. The aim of this work is to compare the effect of two frequently occurring stressors (drought-rewet and freeze-thaw cycles) on the basal respiration rate of mine and natural soils. Soil samples (n = 18) were delivered from the Szczakowa open-cast sand quarry in Poland. The samples were measured for organic matter (OM) content, basal respiration, pH levels, and electric conductivity. The studied mine and natural soils had a similar texture and were classified as loamy sands. The natural soils contained significantly more OM than the mine soils but did not differ in terms of pH. There were no significant differences in the OM content, pH, and texture of the soils under the studied tree species (Pine, Birch, Larch). Mine soils exhibited significantly lower initial respiration rate (RESP value) than the natural soils (1.34 μg C-CO2 g−1 24 h−1 vs. 3.13 μg C-CO2 g−1 24 h−1 ). Five freeze-thaw cycles reduced cumulative CO2 evolution both in both the mine and the natural soils by 17.8% and 6.7%, respectively. Moreover, the reaction of the respiration rate to dry-rewet cycles differed distinctly between the mine and natural soils. In the natural soils, all dry-rewet cycles increased the respiration rate, wherein the increase was much more pronounced in the last two cycles. We conclude that periods of drought in the summer and freeze-thaw events in the autumn and spring may have a stronger negative effect on the functioning of forest ecosystems in the reclaimed lands than in natural stands
Spatial distribution of wood waste in Europe
Wood waste in Europe is produced on a large scale. Production from all 28 European Union countries accounts for around 50.2 Mt. In many countries, wood waste management does not fully utilize this potential, which is in part due to the lack of proper law and regulations. Currently there is no uniform policy on wood waste in the European Union. There is also a lack of accurate statistics on the production and use of this waste. The aim of the study was to estimate the spatial distribution of wood waste from three different sources in the NUTS−2 regions. The total potential of wood waste from i) municipal waste is 24.33 Mt, ii) from wood industry – 5.6 Mt, and iii) from demolition and construction – 19.17 Mt. The total potential of this waste is about 7,85% of estimated waste biomass and by−products of the European Union, which is a significant fraction that can be recycled or used in biofuel production. Proper use of this potential can have a significant impact on the development of the bio−economy sector in all associated countries, which directly translates into the achievement of climate change mitigation targets
Selected properties of biocomposites from biodegradable polymers with the addition of sewage sludge derived biochar
Biochar due to its numerous properties can be applied as an alternative filler in manufacturing of biocomposites. As an alternative filler biochar can modify the properties of composites and allow cost reduction. The overall goal of this study was to determine the effect of the addition of biochar obtained from sewage sludge on the selected properties of the composites produced from biodegradable plastics. The scope of the study included manufacturing of biocomposites from biodegradable plastics (PLA and BIOPLAST GS2189) with the addition of 0%, 10 and 20% of biochar and the analysis of the selected physical properties. The obtained results indicate that biochar as an additive (a filler) in plastics biodegradable polymer causes a significant modification of the investigated properties, in particular mechanical properties
Cultivation of industrial hemp accelerating reclamation of land degraded by open mining of lignite
Jednym z podstawowych surowców energetycznych w Polsce
jest węgiel brunatny. Wydobycie węgla odbywa się metodą odkrywkową.
Powoduje to ogromne negatywne zmiany w środowisku naturalnym.
Do rekultywacji
obszarów poodkrywkowych można wykorzystać konopie
włókniste, których uprawa, a następnie przyorywanie, przyspiesza
procesy glebotwórcze.
W 2012 r. Instytut Włókien Naturalnych i Roślin Zielarskich
wspólnie ze Spółdzielnią Kółek Rolniczych w Kazimierzu Biskupim,
rozpoczął realizację projektu pt. „Rekultywacja terenów zdegradowanych
w rejonie KWB Konin z zastosowaniem uprawy konopi
Ochrony Środowiska i Gospodarki Wodnej. One of the main energy sources in Poland is lignite. Lignite is excavated
by strip mining method. Unfortunately this method caused huge
negative transformations in natural environment. When lignite seam
is exhausted, a dead excavations site is left which is next filled with
the material initially taken away when accessing the lignite seam – an
overburden. In the result, the surface is levelled but the top layer is
not normally formed soil, as it contains only trace amounts of humus.
Remediation of such land can be done by cultivation of industrial hemp
and ploughing the hemp plant matter down which leads to remediation
of degraded land. In 2012, the Institute of Natural Fibres and Medicinal
Plants, in cooperation with Farmers’ Cooperative in Kazimierz
Biskupi initiated a project „Reclamation of Degraded Land in the Region
of Lignite Mine in Konin by Cultivation of Industrial Hemp”. The
Project is subsidized by the European Commission and the National
Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The objective
of the Project is reclamation of land by cultivation of two crops
in a crop rotation – hemp and alfalfa. At the end of vegetation period
plants are ploughed down to supply organic matter and accelerate the
formation of soil humus layer
