The integration of on-line monitoring and reconfiguration functions using IEEE1149.4 into a safety critical automotive electronic control unit.
This paper presents an innovative application of IEEE 1149.4 and the integrated diagnostic reconfiguration (IDR) as tools for the implementation of an embedded test solution for an automotive electronic control unit, implemented as a fully integrated mixed signal system. The paper describes how the test architecture can be used for fault avoidance with results from a hardware prototype presented. The paper concludes that fault avoidance can be integrated into mixed signal electronic systems to handle key failure modes
Auto-driven Photo Elicitation Interviews in Research with Children: Ethical and Practical Considerations
Children can sometimes find it difficult to articulate their experiences if they have to rely solely on words. Giving children the opportunity to use arts-based research approaches can support their participation in research and create a bridge that enables them to express their perspectives and feelings. This paper focuses on the ethical and practical considerations when using photo elicitation interviews (PEI) in research with children. The discussion and examples provided are drawn from an international study that used auto-driven PEI, where photographs are taken by children themselves, to explore childrenâs experiences of living with a chronic condition and the impact condition management may have on their everyday lives. In this paper we critically explore the issues arising from our use of PEI including childrenâs participation and engagement, balancing power and control, and keeping children safe. The main areas of focus for the paper are how PEI provided a means of shifting control; how setting photographic boundaries influenced our PEI study with children; and how we addressed risks associated with the method. Our experience shows that PEI is an engaging and valuable research method, providing a powerful medium for obtaining rich data with children. However, PEI is challenging and it requires researchers to conscientiously address ethical and practical aspects that extend beyond those inherent to standard (words-alone) interviews
Low-mass members of the young cluster IC 4665 and pre-main-sequence lithium depletion
We have used fibre spectroscopy to establish cluster membership and examine
pre-main-sequence (PMS) lithium depletion for low-mass stars (spectral types F
to M) in the sparse young (~30 Myr) cluster IC 4665. We present a filtered
candidate list of 40 stars that should contain 75 per cent of single cluster
members with V of 11.5 to 18 in the central square degree of the cluster.
Whilst F- and G-type stars in IC 4665 have depleted little or no lithium, the
K- and early M-type stars have depleted more Li than expected when compared
with similar stars in other clusters of known age. An empirical age estimate
based on Li-depletion among the late-type stars of IC 4665 would suggest it is
older than 100 Myr. This disagrees entirely with ages determined either from
the nuclear turn-off, from isochronal matches to low-mass stars or from the
re-appearance of lithium previously found in much lower mass stars (the
``lithium depletion boundary''). We suggest that other parameters besides age,
perhaps composition or rotation, are very influential in determining the degree
of PMS Li-depletion in stars with M greater than 0.5 Msun. Further work is
required to identify and assess the effects of these additional parameters,
particularly to probe conditions at the interface between the sub-photospheric
convection zone and developing radiative core. Until then, PMS Li depletion in
F- to early M-type stars cannot be confidently used as a precise age indicator
in young clusters, kinematic groups or individual field stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Lithium Abundances in the Young Open Cluster IC 2602
We have obtained high-resolution spectra for 28 candidate late-type stars in the 30 Myr old cluster IC 2602. NLTE Li abundances have been derived from measured equivalent widths. The log n(Li) - T(sub eff) and log n(Li) - mass distributions for our sample stars have been compared with those of the Pleiades and alpha Persei. Our data show that F stars in the three clusters have the same lithium content, which corresponds to the initial content for Pop. I stars. G and early-K IC 2602 stars are, on average, somewhat more Li-rich than their counterparts in the two slightly older clusters. Finally, the latest-type IC 2602 stars are heavily Li depleted, with their Li content being as low as the lowest measured among the Pleiades. As in the Pleiades and alpha Per, a star-to-star scatter in lithium is observed among 30 Myr old late-K/early-K dwarfs in IC 2602, indicating that this spread develops in the pre-main sequence phases
Generalized Arago-Fresnel laws: The EME-flow-line description
We study experimentally and theoretically the influence of light polarization
on the interference patterns behind a diffracting grating. Different states of
polarization and configurations are been considered. The experiments are
analyzed in terms of electromagnetic energy (EME) flow lines, which can be
eventually identified with the paths followed by photons. This gives rise to a
novel trajectory interpretation of the Arago-Fresnel laws for polarized light,
which we compare with interpretations based on the concept of "which-way" (or

Call Me Caitlyn: Making and making over the 'authentic' transgender body in Anglo-American popular culture
A conception of transgender identity as an âauthenticâ gendered core âtrappedâ within a mismatched corporeality, and made tangible through corporeal transformations, has attained unprecedented legibility in contemporary Anglo-American media. Whilst pop-cultural articulations of this discourse have received some scholarly attention, the question of why this 'wrong body' paradigm has solidified as the normative explanation for gender transition within the popular media remains underexplored. This paper argues that this discourse has attained cultural pre-eminence through its convergence with a broader media and commercial zeitgeist, in which corporeal alteration and maintenance are perceived as means of accessing oneâs âauthenticâ self. I analyse the media representations of two transgender celebrities: Caitlyn Jenner and Nadia Almada, alongside the reality TV show TRANSform Me, exploring how these womenâs gender transitions have been discursively aligned with a cultural imperative for all women, cisgender or trans, to display their authentic femininity through bodily work. This demonstrates how established tropes of authenticity-via-bodily transformation, have enabled transgender to become culturally legible through the wrong body trope. Problematically, I argue, this process has worked to demarcate ideals of âacceptableâ transgender subjectivity: self-sufficient, normatively feminine, and eager to embrace the possibilities for happiness and social integration provided by the commercial domain
Rotation periods of late-type stars in the young open cluster IC 2602
We present the results of a monitoring campaign aimed at deriving rotation
periods for a representative sample of stars in the young (30 Myr) open cluster
IC 2602. Rotation periods were derived for 29 of 33 stars monitored. The
periods derived range from 0.2d (one of the shortest known rotation periods of
any single open cluster star) to about 10d (which is almost twice as long as
the longest period previously known for a cluster of this age). We are able to
confirm 8 previously known periods and derive 21 new ones, delineating the long
period end of the distribution. Despite our sensitivity to longer periods, we
do not detect any variables with periods longer than about 10d. The combination
of these data with those for IC 2391, an almost identical cluster, leads to the
following conclusions:
1) The fast rotators in a 30 Myr cluster are distributed across the entire
0.5 < B-V < 1.6 color range.
2) 6 stars in our sample are slow rotators, with periods longer than 6d.
3) The amplitude of variability depends on both the color and the period. The
dependence on the latter might be important in understanding the selection
effects in the currently available rotation period database and in planning
future observations.
4) The interpretation of these data in terms of theoretical models of
rotating stars suggests both that disk-interaction is the norm rather than the
exception in young stars and that disk-locking times range from zero to a few
