    Static modelling of geological structures for carbon sequestration purposes in the Lorestan area of Iran

    One of the most important methods aimed at climate mitigation technology is carbon geological sequestration. During the process of site selection and characterization required for evaluation of capacity storage potential of a given region, geological static modelling plays an essential role by providing a better understanding of the structure in terms of petrophysical and geological characteristics. This work presents the 3D geological model of several anticlines in the Lorestan area (northwestern Zagros), to evaluate their carbon storage capacity potential. The 3D geological model is based on seismic data and well-log data from 2 wells drilled in the area, kindly provided by the National Iranian Oil company (NIOC). Preliminary well logs analysis allowed to identify potential target formations by considering pivotal criteria of CO2 storage such as depth, porosity, and other petrophysical characteristics. The 3D model will be followed by the construction of a geocellular model that will be populated by petrophysical data obtained from well logs. The reconstructed volume will be then used for injection simulations to obtain an evaluation of the volume available for storage. The dynamic simulation will also provide and support the evaluation of other important aspects such as the injection strategies and efficiency coefficient, comparing the observed theoretical and effective capacity

    The european urology residents education programme hands-on training format: 4 years of hands-on training improvements from the European School of Urology

    Background: The European School of Urology (ESU) started the European Urology Residents Education Programme (EUREP) in 2003 for final year urology residents, with hands-on training (HOT) added later in 2007. Objective: To assess the geographical reach of EUREP, trainee demographics, and individual quality feedback in relation to annual methodology improvements in HOT. Design, setting, and participants: From September 2014 to October 2017 (four EUREP courses) several new features have been applied to the HOT format of the EUREP course: 1:1 training sessions (2015), fixed 60-min time slots (2016), and standardised teaching methodology (2017). The resulting EUREP HOT format was verified by collecting and prospectively analysing the following data: total number of participants attending different HOT courses; participants’ age; country of origin; and feedback obtained annually. Results and limitations: A total of 796 participants from 54 countries participated in 1450 HOT sessions over the last 4 yr. This included 294 (20%) ureteroscopy (URS) sessions, 237 (16.5%) transurethral resection (TUR) sessions, 840 (58%) basic laparoscopic sessions, and 79 (5.5%) intermediate laparoscopic sessions. While 712 residents (89%) were from Europe, 84 (11%) were from non-European nations. Of the European residents, most came from Italy (16%), Germany (15%), Spain (15%), and Romania (8%). Feedback for the basic laparoscopic session showed a constant improvement in scores over the last 4 yr, with the highest scores achieved last year. This included feedback on improvements in tutor rating (p = 0.017), organisation (p < 0.001), and personal experience with EUREP (p < 0.001). Limitations lie in the difficulties associated with the use of an advanced training curriculum with wet laboratory or cadaveric courses in this format, although these could be performed in other training centres in conjunction with EUREP. Conclusions: The EUREP trainee demographics show that the purpose of the course is being achieved, with excellent feedback reported. While European trainees dominate the demographics, participation from a number of non-European countries suggests continued ESU collaboration with other national societies and wider dissemination of simulation training worldwide.EUREP is supported by educational grant from Olympus.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Structural seng and sedimentary basins in the Western Margin of the Calabrian Arc

    In this work, main tectonic and sedimentary aspects of the western margin of the Calabrian Arc have been described through an integrated approach, involving the analysis of mulchannel seismic lines, mulbeam data and Chirp profiles. Through the idenficaon of several seismic sequences, the characterizaon of basins internal geometry, the lateral variaon of thickness and the syntectonic nature it has been possible to link the sedimentary basins configuraon with the Alfeo Fault System geometry and acvity. On the base of our results, we aributed to the Alfeo Fault System the characteriscs of a Subducon Transform Edge Propagator (STEP) Fault. The distribuon of faults, the main sedimentary basins and the relaonship between deep and superficial deformaon allow us to compare the STEP fault features idenfied in the Calabrian Arc with other fault systems in the arc-shaped subducon zones of the world, finding the major affini es with the Carpathian and Barbados arcs

    We have studied the anti-tumor response to cyclophosphamide (CTX) in DBA/2 mice transplanted s.c. with 4 tumors exhibiting different responses to IL-2: ESb lymphoma and Friend leukemia cells (non-responsive or poorly responsive, respectively), pII-R-Eb and Eb lymphoma cells (both highly responsive to IL-2). CTX injections on days 7, 14 and 21 resulted in a significant anti-tumor response in mice transplanted s.c. with Friend leukemia cells or ESb cells, whereas no anti-tumor effect was observed in mice injected with Eb or pII-R-Eb cells. All 4 tumor cell lines were equally sensitive to the cytotoxic effects of mafosfamide, an in vitro active analogue of CTX. To define the host mechanisms responsible for the lack of an anti-tumor effect of CTX in mice transplanted with IL-2-responsive tumors, we studied several aspects of the spontaneous or IL-2-induced anti-tumor response in mice transplanted with pII-R-Eb cells. Injection of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to IFN-gamma completely abolished the anti-tumor effects of IL-2. Using a Winn assay, clear-cut anti-tumor activity was found in spleen cells from mice transplanted with the IL-2-responsive tumors. This activity was abolished by CTX, which also abrogated the anti-tumor response to IL-2 in mice injected with pll-R-Eb cells. Our results indicate an inverse correlation between sensitivity to IL-2 and response to CTX and emphasize the importance of initial host-tumor interaction in determining the type of response to IL-2 or CTX.     3D modelling and capacity estimation of potential targets for CO2 storage in the Adriatic Sea, Italy

    One of the most innovative and effective technologies developed in recent decades for reducing carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere is carbon capture and storage (CCS). It consists of capture, transport and injection of CO2 produced by energy production plants or other industries. The injection takes place in deep geological formations with the suitable geometrical and petrophysical characteristics to trap CO2 permanently in the subsurface, which is called geological storage. In the development process of a potential geological storage site, correct capacity estimation of the injectable volumes of CO2 is one of the most important aspects. There are various approaches to estimate CO2 storage capacities for potential traps, including geometrical equations, dynamic modelling, numerical modelling and 3D modelling. In this work, the generation of 3D petrophysical models and equations for calculation of the storage volumes are used to estimate the effective storage capacity of four potential saline aquifers in the Adriatic Sea offshore. The results show how different saline aquifers, with different lithologies at favourable depths, can host a reasonable amount of CO2, which will require further and more detailed feasibility studies for each of these structures. A detailed analysis is carried out for each saline aquifer identified, varying the parameters of each structure identified and adapting them for a realistic estimate of potential geological storage capacity

    Plasma corticosterone levels in laying hens from three different housing systems: preliminary results

    Adrenocortical and thyroidal hormones are physiological indicators of various forms of stress in the fowl. In order to establish possible variations in corticosterone levels, blood samples were collected from ISA Brown hens reared in three different housing systems (cage, floor and organic way). Results showed that corticosterone concentrations were highest in caged hens, intermediate in organic reared hens and lowest in floor reared hens. It could be assumed that in the last one system birds have an adequate space in controlled environment that permits them to satisfy, though partially, their behavioural needs without the presence of different chronic stress factors acting in the other systems
