Upper Agri Valley (Basilicata) between Geomorphology and Ancient Settlements
In this paper we present the geoarchaeological and landscape project on the Upper Agri Valley (Basilicata). Between 2012 and 2015 we coordinated multidisciplinary research with the purpose of reconstructing the history and evolution of the territory, analysing the relationships between man and landscape from the Prehistory to the Middle Age. The studied area, an inland mountain valley situated in the ancient Lucania, is very important, because it is a fundamental route between the two coasts of Magna Graecia and because during the Roman period this valley was the territory in which Grumentum was born, one of the most important towns of Roman Southern Italy. Thanks to the dialogue between different competences, this project aims at understanding the settlements dynamics and the mutual influences between man and environment: indeed, we conducted geophysics and geoarchaeological investigations, archaeological surveys, cartographic and aerial photos studies, written sources analysis: in this way, different data are used to understand the landscape from a global point of view
Transcendence of Familial Expectations in Alison Bechdel’s Graphic Novels
This thesis focuses on the graphic novels Are You My Mother? and Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. I discuss the ways in which Bechdel highlights her own family’s atypical structure and how the ambiguous presentation of familial roles causes readers to see that being in a “queer” family is actually ordinary, just as being in an “ordinary” family is queer
Chapter The Group as an Education Resource in Guidance Processes
The aim of this paper is to see what happens when reflective practice is used in a guidance intervention made with a group. Fifty university students took part in 3 focus group sessions during which they could discuss the issue of guidance and the choices and construction of a life plan. The results show a clear perception of wellness and usefulness in the educational experience, based on the possibility of knowing oneself, comparing oneself with others, activating systematic reflection on oneself and promoting chang
This article intends to investigate Salvador Seguí square, located in the heart of Raval, at Barcelona historic center.
As part of a big urban project known as Illa Robador, its forms and ways of occupation have really changed during the last ten years.
The Salvador Seguí square is one of the few elements that survived in this millenary urban fabric. Target of an important polemic
discussion, this project was ended in 2012 with the inauguration of Filmoteca de Cataluña. However, the conflicts that
have distinguished this square for years
(as the whole neighborhood) are still
evident today. Understanding its formal characteristics, and recognizing the conflicts, permanencies and transformation aspects at Salvador Seguí square are the main
goals of this article.Peer Reviewe
This article investigates the main functional and morphological changes at the Paulista avenue, placed in
the heart of the metropolis of São Paulo. It intends to explicate the conditions of its centrality and also its
role as a citizen space. Used for public parties and protests, this avenue is also the metro way, and
condenses a significant mix of uses. Paulista is a financial, cultural, commercial, institutional and social
center, all together. To study it we will search for the transformations occurred along the history, focusing
on the changes at the ground floor, building typology, uses, and at the public and collective space
contours. Our analysis are based on the historical documents interpretation, and on drawing elaborated
since information collected in situ. Finally we try to insert this work in the academic discussion about the
street as a potential conductor and articulation of collective spaces, centrality, urbanity and of its
contours.Peer Reviewe
Listen Carefully : A Rhetorical Analysis of Speeches Delivered by President George W. Bush
The current war in Iraq has been defined as both a war on terror as well as a war to free the people of Iraq. It is a fight against a member of the axis of evil and likewise an attempt to bring democracy to the Middle East. Prior to the start of the war, other countries were warned that they were either with us or against us while American citizens were told that a preemptive strike in Iraq was necessary to stop a country harboring weapons of mass destruction. These phrases were used to both frighten Americans as well as embolden them, to rationalize as well as dignify the cause for war, and as a strategy to define Americans as righteous as well as scare them into protection of their fellow citizens.
This thesis will raise questions concerning language and how it produces notions of good and evil as well as how the language used to justify war shapes and molds reality itself. Specifically, this paper will examine four texts. Each is a speech made by President George W. Bush in the months preceding his decision to go to war in Iraq. The initial analysis will be of President George W. Bush’s September 20, 2001 speech in Washington D.C. An examination of Bush\u27s November 10, 2001 speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, New York will ensue and will be followed by an interrogation of his 2002 State of the Union Address which was given on January 29, 2002. Finally, Bush\u27s speech to the graduates at West Point Military Academy on June 1, 2002 will be explored. The rhetorical construction of these speeches and how each speech builds on the previous one will be explored. While they were delivered over a period of ten months and appear in different contexts, viewed together, it is obvious that each speech anticipates the next. Ultimately, this paper will demonstrate how the rhetorical maneuvering which is employed in the speeches of George W. Bush is used to both justify the war in Iraq as well as prove that going to war in Iraq was a foregone conclusion by the Bush administration prior to 2001, but which the events of 9/11 only helped to more clearly define
Chance Constrained Stochastic Optimal Control for Linear Systems with a Time Varying Random Control Matrix
This work proposes an open-loop methodology to solve chance constrained
stochastic optimal control problems for linear systems with a stochastic
control matrix. We consider a joint chance constraint for polytopic
time-varying target sets under moment and unimodality assumptions. We
reformulate the chance constraint into individual biconvex constraints using
the one-sided Vysochanskij-Petunin inequality. We demonstrate our methodology
on two spacecraft rendezvous problems. We compare the proposed method with the
scenario approach and moment-based methods based on Cantelli's inequality.Comment: Final Submission to CCTA 202
