The Outer Halo of the Milky Way as Probed by RR Lyr Variables from the Palomar Transient Facility
RR Lyr stars are ideal massless tracers that can be used to study the total
mass and dark matter content of the outer halo of the Milky Way. This is
because they are easy to find in the light curve databases of large stellar
surveys and their distances can be determined with only knowledge of the light
curve. We present here a sample of 112 RR Lyr beyond 50 kpc in the outer halo
of the Milky Way, excluding the Sgr streams, for which we have obtained
moderate resolution spectra with Deimos on the Keck 2 Telescope. Four of these
have distances exceeding 100 kpc. These were selected from a much larger set of
447 candidate RR Lyr which were datamined using machine learning techniques
applied to the light curves of variable stars in the Palomar Transient Facility
database. The observed radial velocities taken at the phase of the variable
corresponding to the time of observation were converted to systemic radial
velocities in the Galactic standard of rest. From our sample of 112 RR Lyr we
determine the radial velocity dispersion in the outer halo of the Milky Way to
be ~90 km/s at 50 kpc falling to about 65 km/s near 100 kpc once a small number
of major outliers are removed. With reasonable estimates of the completeness of
our sample of 447 candidates and assuming a spherical halo, we find that the

A quantum mechanical analysis of the light-harvesting complex 2 from purple photosynthetic bacteria. Insights into the electrostatic effects of transmembrane helices
We perform a quantum mechanical study of the peptides that are part of the
LH2 complex from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila, a non-sulfur purple bacteria that
has the ability of producing chemical energy from photosynthesis. The
electronic structure calculations indicate that the transmembrane helices of
these peptides are characterized by dipole moments with a magnitude of ~150 D.
When the full nonamer assembly made of eighteen peptides is considered, then a
macrodipole of magnitude 704 D is built up from the vector sum of each monomer
dipole. The macrodipole is oriented normal to the membrane plane and with the
positive tip toward the cytoplasm thereby indicating that the electronic charge
of the protein scaffold is polarized toward the periplasm. The results obtained
here suggest that the asymmetric charge distribution of the protein scaffold
contributes an anisotropic electrostatic environment which differentiates the
absorption properties of the bacteriochlorophyll pigments, B800 and B850,
embedded in the LH2 complex.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Lack of correlation of stem cell markers in breast cancer stem cells
BACKGROUND: Various markers are used to identify the unique sub-population of breast cancer cells with stem cell properties. Whether these markers are expressed in all breast cancers, identify the same population of cells, or equate to therapeutic response is controversial. METHODS: We investigated the expression of multiple cancer stem cell markers in human breast cancer samples and cell lines in vitro and in vivo, comparing across and within samples and relating expression with growth and therapeutic response to doxorubicin, docetaxol and radiotherapy. RESULTS: CD24, CD44, ALDH and SOX2 expression, the ability to form mammospheres and side-population cells are variably present in human cancers and cell lines. Each marker identifies a unique rather than common population of cancer cells. In vivo, cells expressing these markers are not specifically localized to the presumptive stem cell niche at the tumour/stroma interface. Repeated therapy does not consistently enrich cells expressing these markers, although ER-negative cells accumulate. CONCLUSIONS: Commonly employed methods identify different cancer cell sub-populations with no consistent therapeutic implications, rather than a single population of cells. The relationships of breast cancer stem cells to clinical parameters will require identification of specific markers or panels for the individual cancer
Mortality rate of patients with asymptomatic primary biliary cirrhosis diagnosed at age 55 years or older is similar to that of the general population
Recent routine testing for liver function and anti-mitochondrial antibodies has increased the number of newly diagnosed patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). This study investigated the prognosis of asymptomatic PBC patients, focusing on age difference, to clarify its effect on the prognosis of PBC patients.
The study was a systematic cohort analysis of 308 consecutive patients diagnosed with asymptomatic PBC. We compared prognosis between the elderly (55 years or older at the time of diagnosis) and the young patients (< 55 years). The mortality rate of the patients was also compared with that of an age- and gender-matched general population.
The elderly patients showed a higher aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio, and lower alanine aminotransferase level than the young patients (P < 0.01 and P = 0.03, respectively). The two groups showed similar values for alkaline phosphatase and immunoglobulin M. Death in the young patients was more likely to be due to liver failure (71%), while the elderly were likely to die from other causes before the occurrence of liver failure (88%; P < 0.01), especially from malignancies (35%). The mortality rate of the elderly patients was not different from that of the age- and gender-matched general population (standardized mortality ratio, 1.1; 95% confidence interval, 0.6-1.7), although this rate was significantly higher than that of the young patients (P = 0.044).

Aggressive mammary carcinoma progression in Nrf2 knockout mice treated with 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2), which belongs to the basic leucine zipper transcription factor family, is a strategy for cancer chemopreventive phytochemicals. It is an important regulator of genes induced by oxidative stress, such as glutathione S-transferases, heme oxygenase-1 and peroxiredoxin 1, by activating the antioxidant response element (ARE). We <it>hypothesized </it>that (1) the citrus coumarin auraptene may suppress premalignant mammary lesions via activation of Nrf2/ARE, and (2) that Nrf2 knockout (KO) mice would be more susceptible to mammary carcinogenesis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Premalignant lesions and mammary carcinomas were induced by medroxyprogesterone acetate and 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene treatment. The 10-week pre-malignant study was performed in which 8 groups of 10 each female wild-type (WT) and KO mice were fed either control diet or diets containing auraptene (500 ppm). A carcinogenesis study was also conducted in KO vs. WT mice (n = 30-34). Comparisons between groups were evaluated using ANOVA and Kaplan-Meier Survival statistics, and the Mann-Whitney U-test.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All mice treated with carcinogen exhibited premalignant lesions but there were no differences by genotype or diet. In the KO mice, there was a dramatic increase in mammary carcinoma growth rate, size, and weight. Although there was no difference in overall survival, the KO mice had significantly lower mammary tumor-free survival. Also, in the KO mammary carcinomas, the active forms of NF-κB and β-catenin were increased ~2-fold whereas no differences in oxidized proteins were observed. Many other tumors were observed, including lymphomas. Interestingly, the incidences of lung adenomas in the KO mice were significantly higher than in the WT mice.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We report, for the first time, that there was no apparent difference in the formation of premalignant lesions, but rather, the KO mice exhibited rapid, aggressive mammary carcinoma progression.</p
An Effective Approach to Pose Invariant 3D Face Recognition
Abstract. One critical challenge encountered by existing face recognition techniques lies in the difficulties of handling varying poses. In this paper, we propose a novel pose invariant 3D face recognition scheme to improve regular face recognition from two aspects. Firstly, we propose an effective geometry based alignment approach, which transforms a 3D face mesh model to a well-aligned 2D image. Secondly, we propose to represent the facial images by a Locality Preserving Sparse Coding (LPSC) algorithm, which is more effective than the regular sparse coding algorithm for face representation. We conducted a set of extensive experiments on both 2D and 3D face recognition, in which the encouraging results showed that the proposed scheme is more effective than the regular face recognition solutions.
