A Comparative Study of MMPI Variables and Their Relationship to Successful Alcoholic Rehabilitation
This study was designed to determine whether the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory could successfully predict the outcome of rehabilitative treatment given 84 racially mixed male alcoholics having a mean age of 42.2 years who were admitted to the Wyoming State Hospital between September 1, 1965, and September 1, 1966. The subjects were given the MMPI before receiving 16 weeks of treatment consisting of education, group and individual psychotherapy, alcoholics anonymous, routine ward treatment, disulfiram (antibuse), special ward unit, and special program without ward. After their release from hospital, the subjects were evaluated yearly for five years by relatives, employers, and themselves concerning vocational and familial responsibilities, sobriety, AA attendance, and drinking.
Multiple regression analysis, a multivariate statistical technique was utilized to analyze the data from a systematic follow-up questionnaire. At the end of five years 32 of the original 84 subjects could be located. The study concluded that the MMPI cannot be used to predict successful treatment of alcoholics at Wyoming State Hospital
Extragalactic infrared spectroscopy
The spectra of galaxies in the near infrared atmospheric transmission windows are explored. Emission lines were detected due to molecular hydrogen, atomic hydrogen recombination lines, a line attributed to FEII, and a broad CO absorption feature. Lines due to H2 and FEII are especially strong in interacting and merging galaxies, but they were also detected in Seyferts and normal spirals. These lines appear to be shock excited. Multi-aperture measurements show that they emanate from regions as large as 15 kpc. It is argued that starbursts provide the most plausible and consistent model for the excitation of these lines, but the changes of relative line intensity of various species with aperture suggest that other excitation mechanisms are also operating in the outer regions of these galaxies
Expression of pheromone binding proteins during antennal development in the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar
We have identified 2 olfactory specific proteins in the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar that are uniquely associated with the male antennae, the principal olfactory organs of this animal. These proteins were the major soluble protein components of the olfactory sensilla, present in equivalent amounts. Both proteins comigrated on SDS-PAGE, showing an apparent molecular mass of 15,000 Da but migrated separately on non-SDS-PAGE, indicating differences in net charge. N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis showed that the 2 proteins share 50% identity, indicating that they are genetically distinct homologs. Both proteins bound the L. dispar sexpheromone, associated with antisera prepared against the previously identified phermone-binding protein (PBP) of the moth Antheraea polyphemus, and shared sequence identity with the A. polyphemus PBP. These 2 proteins are therefore identified as L. dispar PBPs and are termed PBP1 and PBP2 based on their migration differences on non-SDS-PAGE. It is estimated that PBP1 and PBP2 are present in the sensilla lumen at a combined concentration of 13.4 mM. The expression of the L. dispar PBPs was examined during the 11 d development of the adult antenna. PBP1 and PBP2 were first detected by non-SDS-PAGE analysis and Coomassie blue staining 3 d before adult eclosion, on day A-3. Levels increased, reaching a plateau on day A-1 that continued into adult life. In vivo labeling studies indicated that the rate of PBP synthesis increased from A-3 to a plateau on A-2, where it remained into adult life. In vitro translations of antennal mRNAs indicated that translatable PBP mRNA was available at a very low level on day A-4, increased slightly on A-3 and dramatically on A-2, and remained at a high level into adult life. PBP mRNA represented the major translatable mRNA in the antenna during this period. It was estimated that the PBPs undergo a combined steady-state turnover of 8 x 10(7) molecules/hr/sensillum. Cursory in vivo and in vitro translation studies of antennal mRNA from A. polyphemus and Manduca sexta showed similar temporal patterns of PBP expression, suggesting that the L. dispar observations are general
A Molecular Tidal Tail in the Medusa Minor Merger
We have detected CO 1-0 emission along the tidal tail of the NGC 4194 (the
Medusa) merger. It is the first CO detection in the optical tail of a minor
merger. Emission is detected both in the centre of the tail and at its tip. The
molecular mass in the 33'' Onsala 20m beam is estimated to be >= 8.5 x 10^7
M_{sun} which is at least 4% of the total molecular mass measured so far in
this system. We suggest that the emission is a molecular tidal tail which is
part of the extended structure of the main body, and that the molecular gas was
thrown out by the collision instead of having formed in situ from condensing
atomic material. We find it unlikely that the emission is associated with a
tidal dwarf galaxy (even if the future formation of such an object is
possible), but high resolution HI, CO and optical observations are necessary to
resolve the issue. The Medusa is very likely the result of an elliptical+spiral
collison and our detection supports the notion that molecular gas in minor
mergers can be found at great distances from the merger centre.Comment: 4 Pages, 2 figures included, accepted for A&A letter

Completion report: Raft River Geothermal Injection Well Seven (RRGI-7)
Raft River Geothermal Injection Well Seven (RRGI-7) is an intermediate-depth injection well designed to accept injected water in the 600 to 1000 m (2000 to 3500 ft) depth range. It has one barefoot leg, and it was drilled so that additional legs could be added later; if there are problems with intermediate-depth injection, one or more additional legs could be directionally drilled from the current well bore. This report describes the drilling and completion of RRGI-7 and provides a brief summary of preliminary testing. It includes daily drilling reports, as well as records of logging, coring, and containment techniques used during drilling operations

Completion report: Raft River Geothermal Production Well Four (RRGP-4)
The fourth Raft River well was originally drilled to 866 m (2840 ft), for use as a test injection well. This well allowed the injection of geothermal fluids into the intermediate zone--above the geothermal production zone and below the shallow groundwater aquifers. After this testing, the well was deepened and cased for use as a production well. The well's designation was changed from RRGI-4 to RRGP-4. This report describes the drilling and completion of both drilling projects. Results of well tests are also included

A ROLE FOR BIOELECTRIC EFFECTS IN THE INDUCTION OF BYSTANDER SIGNALS BY IONIZING RADIATION?
The induction of “bystander effects” i.e. effects in cells which have not received an ionizing radiation track, is now accepted but the mechanisms are not completely clear. Bystander effects following high and low LET radiation exposure are accepted but mechanisms are still not understood. There is some evidence for a physical component to the signal. This paper tests the hypothesis that bioelectric or biomagnetic phenomena are involved. Human immortalized skin keratinocytes and primary explants of mouse bladder and fish skin, were exposed directly to ionizing radiation or treated in a variety of bystander protocols. Exposure of cells was conducted by shielding one group of flasks using lead, to reduce the dose below the threshold of 2mGy 60Cobalt gamma rays established for the bystander effect. The endpoint for the bystander effect in the reporter system used was reduction in cloning efficiency (RCE). The magnitude of the RCE was similar in shielded and unshielded flasks. When cells were placed in a Faraday cage the magnitude of the RCE was less but not eliminated. The results suggest that liquid media or cellcell contact transmission of bystander factors may be only part of the bystander mechanism. Bioelectric or bio magnetic fields may have a role to play. To test this further, cells were placed in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine for 10min using a typical head scan protocol. This treatment also induced a bystander response. Apart from the obvious clinical relevance, the MRI results further suggest that bystander effects may be produced by non-ionizing exposures. It is concluded that bioelectric or magnetic effects may be involved in producing bystander signaling cascades commonly seen following ionizing radiation exposure

Research to understand and predict geopressured reservoir characteristics with confidence
The Department of Energy's Geopressured Geothermal Program has sponsored a series of geoscience studies to resolve key uncertainties in the performance of geopressured reservoirs. The priority areas for research include improving the ability to predict reservoir size and flow capabilities, understanding the role of oil and gas in reservoir depletion and evaluating mechanisms for reservoir pressure maintenance. Long-term production from the Gladys McCall well has provided the basis for most of the current research efforts. The well was shut-in on October 29, 1987, for pressure recovery after producing over 27 million barrels of brine with associated gas. Geologic investigations are evaluating various mechanisms for pressure maintenance in this reservoir, including recharge from adjacent reservoirs or along growth faults, shale dewatering, and laterally overlapping and connected sandstone layers. Compaction studies using shale and sandstone core samples have provided data on the relationship between rock compression and reservoir pressure decline and the correlation to changes in porosity and permeability. The studies support the use of a porosity-coupled reservoir simulation model which has provided an excellent match to the well's production history. 10 refs., 3 figs
