Oral abnormalities in the Ellis-van Creveld syndrome

    No full text
Ellis-van Creveld (EvC) syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder, mainly affecting the ectodermal components such as, enamel, nail, and hair. The gene for EvC syndrome is located on chromosome 4p16. Patients with EvC syndrome characteristically presents with congenitally missing teeth, abnormal frenal attachment, microdontia, and hexadactyly

Clinical evaluation of role of dual antiplatelet therapy on bleeding after dental extraction

    No full text
Aims and Objectives: Altered platelet function and increased bleeding time (BT) can occur with antiplatelet therapy. This study was conducted to evaluate the need for stoppage of dual antiplatelet therapy in patients undergoing dental extractions. Materials and Methods: One hundred and fifty patients indicated for dental extraction were grouped as Group I: Consisted of 75 patients on dual antiplatelet therapy and Group II: Consisted of 75 patients who have discontinued antiplatelet therapy 1 week before dental extraction. BT of all the participants was recorded before extraction procedures. Under local anesthesia, single molar tooth indicated for simple extraction was done in both the groups. Suturing along with pressure pack was done after extraction. BT after extraction was statistically checked between the groups after 1 h and 24 h using Chi-square test with P < 0.05. Results: Postoperatively, none of the patients in both the groups showed active bleeding 1 h and 24 h. No bleeding was seen in 73 patients in Group I and 78 patients in Group II after 24 h. Conclusion: This study concluded that there is no significant difference in BT in both the groups. Antiplatelet monotherapy or even antiplatelet dual therapy needs no alteration or stopped before minor oral surgical procedures. Most of the postoperative bleeding can be easily controlled by local hemostatic measures

Clinical evaluation of rotary system over manual system in deciduous molars: A clinical trial

    No full text
Background: Primary teeth need special attention since they differ from permanent teeth in canal morphology and tendency for root resorption. The present study was conducted to compare manual and rotary instrumentation techniques in deciduous teeth. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on 120 patients (boys – 60, girls – 60) in the age range of 5–12 years. Patients were divided into two groups of sixty each. Group I patients were treated with rotary files and Group II patients with manual technique. Time taken for instrumentation and obturating the canals in both groups was recorded. The quality of filling was labeled as optimal, underfilled, and overfilled. Results: The mean instrumentation time in Group I was 12.4 min and in Group II was 18.2 min. Chi-square test showed highly statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). The mean filling time in Group I was 1.4 min and in Group II was 2.6 min. In Group I, in 92%, filling was optimal, whereas in Group II, 76% had optimal filling, 5% in Group I and 14% in Group II had overfilling, and 3% in Group I and 10% in Group II had underfilling. Conclusion: In the present study, we found lesser instrumentation time and filling time with rotary system compared to manual endodontic method

Unusual Case of a Talon Cusp on a Supernumerary Tooth in Association with a Mesiodens

    No full text
Talon cusp is an accessory cusp similar to a projection, extending from the cingulum or cemento-enamel junction to the incisal edge. It occurs on labial or palatal surfaces of primary or permanent anterior teeth in both arches. This accessory cusp can occur as an isolated entity or in association with other dental anomalies. Occurrence of a talon cusp on supernumerary teeth is rare and uncommon. This paper reports an unusual case of a talon cusp on a supernumerary tooth in association with mesiodens

Epidemiology of H1N1 in western Rajasthan

Background: H1N1 pandemic posed a serious threat to world health community. We described the epidemiology of H1N1 in western Rajasthan. Materials and Methods: This study was a retrospective descriptive analysis all 686 confirmed cases of H1N1 in western Rajasthan from the month of August 2009 to March 2010 and conducted in hospitals attached to Dr. S. N. Medical College, Jodhpur. Data were analyzed using GraphPad software (GraphPad Prism ® .) and Chi-square test. Results: A total of 686 cases were confirmed positive with positivity ratio of 32.3%. The overall case fatality rate was 11.7%. The highest number of cases (50.7%) and deaths (60%) were seen during the month of Decemberand among the age group of 16-30 years. About 54% of patients were males. Mortality rate was higher in females (64%). Although, there were more cases reported from the urban area (60%), the mortality was higher in patients of the rural area (62.5%). The mortality rate among pregnant women was also higher than other groups. Conclusions: H1N1 influenza occurred predominantly among the younger age group with high case fatality especially among postpartum women in the study populatio

Impacted mesiodentes with an inverted one: A rare case report and literature review

    No full text
Supernumerary teeth are considered to be one of the most significant dental anomalies affecting the primary and early mixed dentition and may cause a variety of pathological disturbances to the developing permanent dentition and also resulting in poor dental and facial esthetics. Mesiodens is the erupted or unerupted extra tooth in the midline of the maxilla, along with normal teeth (between the central incisors). Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary for the prevention of deleterious effects on dentoalveolar structures. The inverted conical mesiodens is frequently associated with cystic lesions and can erupt into the nasal floor, becoming more difficult to remove with time. The aim of this case report is to share knowledge about the management of bilateral impacted mesiodentes including the inverted type cases with unusual location, which might assist the clinician in decision-making

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of visual pedagogy teaching method for improving oral hygiene practice in children with Autism: An interventional study: Visual pedagogy is a relatively newer approach to improve dental care in autistic children. The present study aimed to evaluate visual pedagogy in the practice of oral hygiene in autistic children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This interventional and prospective study was conducted in the Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry. Required approval was obtained from Institutional Ethical Board. Written informed consent was obtained from parents/caregivers. The age range was 5–12 years which included 100 participants (40 males and 60 females). Improvement of oral hygiene was evaluated by recording the tooth brushing technique and ability to follow instructions as presented in the educational video shown on smartphones with Wi-Fi/mobile data. Inclusion criteria: (1) Accessibility and (2) Age range between 5 to 12 years. Exclusion criteria: (1) Non-cooperative children, (2) Children receiving medicines that influence oral health, and (3) Inability to follow-ups. Fones technique was used for brushing teeth in video recording demonstrating it in simple structured steps. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square and Independent t tests. RESULTS: Statistically significant improvement was observed in oral hygiene (plaque index) after training patients with visual pedagogy. CONCLUSION: In the present study, the use of visual pedagogy showed improvement in the oral hygiene scores of autistic children
