    A Mathematical Study on the Dynamics of an Eco-Epidemiological Model in the Presence of Delay

    In the present work a mathematical model of the prey-predator system with disease in the prey is proposed. The basic model is then modified by the introduction of time delay. The stability of the boundary and endemic equilibria are discussed. The stability and bifurcation analysis of the resulting delay differential equation model is studied and ranges of the delay inducing stability as well as the instability for the system are found. Using the normal form theory and center manifold argument, we derive the methodical formulae for determining the bifurcation direction and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solution. Some numerical simulations are carried out to explain our theoretical analysis

    Global Dynamics of a Water-Borne Disease Model with Multiple Transmission Pathways

    We propose and analyze a water born disease model introducing water-to-person and person-toperson transmission and saturated incidence. The disease-free equilibrium and the existence criterion of endemic equilibrium are investigated. Trans critical bifurcation at the disease-free equilibrium is obtained when the basic reproductive number is one. The local stability of both the equilibria is shown and a Lyapunov functional approach is also applied to explore the global stability of the system around the equilibria. We display the effects of pathogen contaminated water and infection through contact on the system dynamics in the absence of person-to-person contact as well as in the presence of water-to-person contact. It is shown that in the presence of water-to-person transmission, the model system globally stable around both the disease-free and endemic equilibria. Lastly, some numerical simulations are provided to verify our analytical results

    Boundary Stabilization of Torsional Vibrations of a Solar Panel

    In this paper, we study a boundary stabilization of the torsional vibrations of a solar panel. The panel is held by a rigid hub at one end and is totally free at the other. The dynamics of the overall system leads to hybrid system of equations. It is set to a certain initial vibrations with a control torque as a stabilizer at the hub end only. Taking a non-linear damping as boundary stabilizer, a uniform exponential energy decay rate is obtained directly. Thus an explicit form of uniform stabilization of the system is achieved by means of the exponential energy decay estimate

    Identification of RAPD and SCAR markers associated with yield traits in the Indian tropical tasar silkworm Antheraea mylitta drury

    Abstract The tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta, is a semi-domesticated vanya silk-producing insect of high economic importance. To date, no molecular marker associated with cocoon and shell weights has been identified in this species. In this report, we identified a randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker and examined its inheritance, and also developed a stable diagnostic sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker. Silkworms were divided into groups with high (HCSW) and low (LCSW) cocoon and shell weights, and the F 2 progeny of a cross between these two groups were obtained. DNA from these silkworms was screened by PCR using 34 random primers and the resulting RAPD fragments were used for cluster analysis and discriminant function analysis (DFA). The clustering pattern in a UPGMA-based dendogram and DFA clearly distinguished the HCSW and LCSW groups. Multiple regression analysis identified five markers associated with cocoon and shell weights. The marker OPW16 905 bp showed the most significant association with cocoon and shell weights, and its inheritance was confirmed in F 2 progeny. Cloning and sequencing of this 905 bp fragment showed 88% identity between its 134 nucleotides and the Bmc-1/Yamato-like retroposon of A. mylitta. This marker was further converted into a diagnostic SCAR marker (SCOPW 16 826 bp ). The SCAR marker developed here may be useful in identifying the right parental stock of tasar silkworms for high cocoon and shell weights in breeding programs designed to enhance the productivity of tasar silk

    Post-traumatic stress disorder in children and adolescents one year after a super-cyclone in Orissa, India: exploring cross-cultural validity and vulnerability factors

    BACKGROUND: It has been asserted that psychological responses to disasters in children and adolescents vary widely across cultures, but this has rarely been investigated. The objectives of the study were to clinically evaluate the construct of traumatic stress symptoms and disorder in children and adolescents after a super-cyclone in Orissa, India; to find out the prevalence at one year; compare the effect in high and low exposure areas and study the factors associated with it. METHODS: Clinical examination of children and adolescents (n = 447) was done, supplemented by a symptoms checklist based on International Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders, Diagnostic Criteria for Research and a semi-structured questionnaire for disaster related experiences. RESULTS: A majority of children had post-traumatic symptoms. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was present in 30.6% (95% confidence interval: 26.4 to 34.9), and an additional 13.6% had sub-syndromal PTSD. Parents or teachers reported mental health concerns in 7.2% subjects, who were a minor proportion (12.8%) of subjects with any syndromal diagnosis (n = 196). Significantly more (43.7%) children in high exposure areas had PTSD than that (11.2%) in low exposure areas (p < 0.001). Depression was significantly associated with PTSD. Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that high exposure, lower educational level and middle socioeconomic status significantly predicted the outcome of PTSD. Extreme fear and perceived threat to life during the disaster, death in family, damage to home, or staying in shelters were not significantly associated with PTSD. CONCLUSION: Following natural disaster PTSD is a valid clinical construct in children and adolescents in Indian set up; and though highly prevalent it may be missed without clinical screening. Its manifestation and associated factors resembled those in other cultures

    Not AvailableEffective utilization of land and water resources is attempted in the present study throgh an integrated farming system and multi- objective optimization management framework model using goal programming algorithm in a coastal waterlogged paddy area in Odisha, India. A methodology is developed to identify the water harvesting structure locations in the study area using spatial science tool. Due to the uncertainity of parameters and control variables , development of management framework was considered with 85% and 75% probability of rainfall occurence and run- off generation. To incorporate the uncertainities a multi- objective linear goal programming optimization model is developed considering the objective of maximizing the net annual return and production subject to optimal allocation of land. While evaluating the model for different water resources scenarios , the net annual return is found to be rs 4,343,477 and maximum production is 10, 424 q from scenario I, whereas maximum production of 10.980 q is obtained in scenario II. Tomato and rice cultivation area increased from 11.47 to 21.43 ha and 8.82 to 10.48 ha respectively in scenario II. The developed methodology shows the potential applicability in similar farming situations in other areas.Not Availabl
