    Shares of Housework Between Mothers, Fathers and Young People: Routine and Non-routine Housework, Doing Housework for Oneself and Others

    We use data from the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics time use survey to investigate shares of domestic work along two dimensions; routine and non-routine activities, and housework done for the whole household versus housework done for oneself only. We argue that the latter is an underutilised marker of responsibility for household management and serving others. Exploiting data from matched household members, we examine relative shares of fathers and mothers, and also of co-resident young people aged 15–34 (416 households), to include inputs from the younger generation as well as the parental couple. Mothers do the greatest share of routine housework and housework for others; parents are relatively equal in the shares of non-routine housework and housework done for themselves only. Young people take on a minimal share of total household work, particularly tasks done for others in the family. Parents’ employment configuration is associated with adjustments in shares between them, with no effect on children’s shares. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

    This Article discusses the current administration of the U.S. antidumping and countervailing duty laws in proceedings involving products from Mexico. Specifically, this Article begins by providing an overview of the basic statutory and regulatory provisions of the U.S. antidumping duty law, emphasizing the application of certain provisions in cases involving imports from Mexico. The Article then focuses its discussion upon recent developments in the U.S. countervailing duty law that have had a unique effect upon Mexican exporters. The Article continues by highlighting the antidumping and countervailing duty provisions of the recently concluded U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement (the FTA or Agreement ). Finally, this Article concludes by offering U.S. and Mexico free trade negotiators a few suggestions to ensure the successful completion of the forthcoming free trade talks

In this paper, we review constructs commonly employed in studies reported in the education literature undertaken to better understand how and why people learn. We then incorporate these constructs into a model of learning that we hope can be utilized as a starting point in further research in information systems education

    Mass transfer during low mass X-ray transient decays

    The outbursts of low mass X-ray binaries are prolonged relative to those of dwarf nova cataclysmic variables as a consequence of X-ray irradiation of the disc. We show that the time-scale of the decay light curve and its luminosity at a characteristic time are linked to the radius of the accretion disc. Hence a good X-ray light curve permits two independent estimates of the disc radius. In the case of the milli-second pulsars SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J0929-314 the agreement between these estimates is very strong. Our analysis allows new determinations of distances and accretion disc radii. Our analysis will allow determination of accretion disc radii for sources in external galaxies, and hence constrain system parameters where other observational techniques are not possible. We also use the X-ray light curves to estimate the mass transfer rate. The broken exponential decay observed in the 2002 outburst of SAX J1808.4-3658 may be caused by the changing self-shadowing of the disc.Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables.     Efficacy of a Preemergence Herbicide Following Postemergence Control to Reduce Sericea Lespedeza in Old Fields Managed for Northern Bobwhite

    Sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata; hereafter, sericea) is a nonnative forb that commonly invades sites managed for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; hereafter, bobwhite). Sericea can reduce habitat quality for bobwhite as it outcompetes native plants that provide forage and cover. Bobwhite eat sericea seed, but seed are relatively indigestible and may limit nutrition intake and reduce the fecundity rate. Postemergence herbicides, including glyphosate, triclopyr, and fluroxypyr+triclopyr, control standing sericea, but do not provide preemergence control, which would increase long-term control because sericea annually produces large amounts of hard seed with high dormancy rates. Imazapic is labeled to provide preemergence control, but no study has evaluated preemergence applications of imazapic following postemergence herbicides to control sericea and promote native plants important for bobwhite. Additionally, data evaluating various rates of imazapic to control sericea are lacking. We currently are evaluating the efficacy of glyphosate and fluroxypyr+triclopyr, applied alone post-emergence and in conjunction with 3 preemergence rates of imazapic, to reduce coverage of sericea at 4 sites in Tennessee and Alabama, USA. We split each site into 8 treatment units and control and assigned the following treatments: glyphosate, fluroxypyr+triclopyr, glyphosate with 48, 96, and 144 ml/ha (4, 8, and 12 oz/acre) imazapic, and fluroxypyr+triclopyr with 48, 96, and 144 ml/ha imazapic. We applied 767 ml/ha (2 qt/acre) glyphosate and 192 ml/ha (16 oz/acre) fluroxypyr+triclopyr in August 2018 to control established sericea. We measured coverage of native forbs, native grasses, and sericea during the 2019 and 2020 growing seasons to determine the efficacy of treatments on sericea and the native plant community. Both glyphosate and fluroxypyr+triclopyr reduced sericea coverage 1 and 2 growing seasons following treatment, but we documented no difference in reduction of sericea coverage between postemergence treatments. We will apply imazapic in March 2021 at 3 different rates to determine whether a preemergence application improves sericea control. Our results on the effectiveness of a preemergence application after postemergence applications should provide valuable information to managers trying to control sericea on lands managed for bobwhite
