    Barbados: Meeting the Challenge of Competitiveness in the 21st Century

    The material within these pages shows that Barbados, a Caribbean country with just over a quarter of a million people, embodies many of the classic vulnerabilities of an island with a small open economy, yet aspires to developed-country status, and is already well advanced on the road to achieving the MDG targets. Viewed in this light, this book raises the question: Is Barbados the little island that can? The authors have approached that question mainly from the point of view of international competitiveness, one of the pillars, along with macroeconomic and financial stability, required for accelerated and sustained growth. Starting with a wide-ranging macroeconomic diagnosis, this monograph examines the strengths and competitiveness challenges facing Barbados from the points of view of the institutional and private sector constraints and environment for competitiveness, labour market conditions and trade policy framework and performance. It also narrows the focus to take a sectoral perspective, examining the leading tourism industry.     Culinary tourism and food trends

    This article aims to highlight the importance of segmenting and bringing a consensual definition on food tourism, gastronomic tourism and culinary, in the international Academia. We will then focus on culinary tourism as a market trend, also recognizing the food trends, grouped as products in this typology of food tourism. As a way of achieving the proposed objective, we proceeded to select indicators of trends in the area of food tourism, based on a review of the scientific literature. As a result of the literature review, two models are presented, one of the definitions of culinary tourism, based on five components, the other as a model of creation of new touristic food products. Finally, with this review, we wish to contribute to the recognition of more accurate market strategies towards these types of food tourism, impaired with the respect for local and regional heritages of the touristic destinations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Beyond the Mass Tourism Stereotype

    Low-priced tour packages are mass tourism power projection sites where providers attempt to restrict tourist power. This study adopts a hybrid design that incorporates dual analytic autoethnography and blog analysis, sharing not only the authors’ experiences and insights into the negotiation between supplier attempts to disempower tourists and reciprocal efforts of tourists to self-empower in all-inclusive tour packages, but also viewpoints of other tour participants collected during the tours and from the Internet. Tour experiences were negotiated through power exchanges. In this “powerscape,” we were subjected to disempowerment strategies, including domination, intimidation, reliance creation, and trust building, while our self-empowerment ranged from active resistance to nonresistance. Different disempowerment strategies appear to solicit specific reactions. Our exploratory study provides insight into the power dynamics implicit in mass tourism and identifies several contextual factors that shape power relationships.Griffith Business School, Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel ManagementFull Tex
