Equipment and process performance improvement using automated monitoring system
Factories are faced with many challenges especially with the increased product complexity along with tightened quality, yield and productivity indicators. Engineers working on maintaining, troubleshooting, design/improving equipments and process always lack of efficient tool to help them track equipment state and improve the utilization. The Overall Equipment Effectiveness metric (OEE) is a very powerful tool that can be used to measure productivity at equipment level. Previous research has shown that OEE’s along with accurate and consistent equipment state data can be combined with process parameters to give estimates of productivity at the factory level. A factory monitoring tool that facilitates the analysis of a manufacturing system, by integrating KPIV and OEE metrics is studied in this project. Such a system allows factory professionals to analyze system performance by automatically evaluating the productivity metrics of equipment using the tool. This is extended to evaluate the metrics at subsystem level and thereon to the factory level and also to detect the bottleneck elements in the system. This tool paves way for further research on continuous productivity improvement methods development
Impact of Information Technology on innovation in determining firm performance.
Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. The aim of this study was to investigate if IT Capability played a moderating role on
the relationship between Innovation Capability and the Firm Performance. The study
used resource-based theory to test if IT was a competitive resource, by examining
the role it played between the constructs of innovation capability and firm
performance. A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst two hundred and
ninety two (292) employees at the Hillside Aluminium Smelter in Richards Bay,
South Africa. The results showed a strong, positive and statistically significant
relationship between innovation and firm performance (r-value of 0.616, p-value
<0.01, and R2 value of 0.375). The results also support the model in showing a
moderate and statistically significant relationship between IT Capability and
Innovation Capability (r-value of 0.563, p-value <0.01, and R2 value of 0.32). The
conceptual model tested the moderation role of IT Capability between Innovation
Capability and Firm Performance. These results showed a favorable result for the
moderator variable (p-value <0.01), however the Innovation Capability as the
independent variable showed an unfavorable results (p-value=0.579 > 0.05), albeit
with a good R2 value of 0.45. Consequently, a multiple regression analysis was
conducted using IT Capability and Innovation Capability as independent variables.
This model proved to be statistically significant with both p-values of <0.01 and a R2
value of 0.4573. This result fitted well with the research analysis. For practice, the
drive for innovation as a key determinant of future firm competitive advantage must
factor in the technological capability, specifically information technology. Through
the careful selection of IT resources and skills, IT capabilities the are valuable, rare,
imperfectly imitable, and non-substitutable can be achieved, resulting in IT as a
strategic resource

Who is the "God of this age" in 2 Corinthians 4:4?
Includes bibliographical referencesThe Pauline phrase, … "the god of this age", that occurs in 2 Cor 4:4 is unique in that it is not found in Greek literature preceding the writings of Paul. The majority of English versions of the Bible render the noun … using the lower case 'g' ("god"), but some are explicit, translating as "devil" and "Satan". Most modern commentaries on 2 Corinthians explain that the phrase is a clear reference to Satan, and argue that Paul's conceptualization of the devil and his views of "this age" grew out of categories used in Second Temple Judaism, especially apocalyptic literature. They also assert that the act of blinding people from seeing the light of the gospel can only be attributed to the enemy of God. This thesis is based on a socio-rhetorical interpretation of 2 Cor 4:1-6 and concludes that the phrase … refers to the supreme God of Judeo-Christian thought, in keeping with the referential value of … as frequently used in the Pauline corpus. It maintains that in this context Paul is responding to the peculiar problem of Jewish unbelief , and that he argues that in the same way that the "minds" of unbelieving Jews had been divinely "hardened" to the old covenant (3:14), so their "minds" had now been "blinded" to the gospel by the God of this age (4:4). The thesis is supported by a survey of the history of interpretation of 2 Cor 4:4, which shows that the modern preferred interpretation is relatively recent, predominating only over the past six centuries. Prior to the period of the Renaissance, most expositors of Paul preferred to interpret this phrase as a reference to God. The thesis is also based on a reconstruction of Paul's conceptualization of Satan in the light of Jewish speculations on evil, and furthermore undertakes a critical enquiry on the extent to which Paul was dependent on Jewish apocalypticism when he formulated the epithet "the God of this age
A United Kingdom survey of surgical technique and handling practice of inguinal canal structures during hernia surgery
Background: Recent trials have assessed the impact of elective nerve division on patient outcome after inguinal herniorrhaphy. The aim of this study was to establish UK surgical practice of handling of structures in the inguinal canal during herniorrhaphy. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of all Fellows (n = 1113) of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) was performed. The main outcomes were to determine method of inguinal hernia repair and routine practice for intra-operative handling of structures in the inguinal canal. Results: A total of 852 (77%) questionnaires were returned, of which 784 (92%) surgeons performed inguinal herniorrhaphy. Approximately two-thirds (63%) of responding surgeons performed less than 50 procedures per annum and 37% conducted more than 50 procedures annually. Mesh was the preferred method used by 90% of surgeons; 6% used non-mesh, and 4% used other (laparoscopic) methods. Routine practice in relation to the inguinal structures varied by volume of hernia surgery; surgeons who conducted more than 50 procedures annually were more likely to visualize and preserve inguinal nerve structures. However, inconsistency in the answers suggested confusion over anatomy. Conclusion: This is the first UK survey to investigate method of hernia repair and usual handling practice of inguinal canal structures. There was wide acceptance of the use of mesh in inguinal hernia repair, with the majority of UK surgeons favoring an open approach. Surgeons performing high volumes of herniorrhaphy were more likely to preserve, rather than transect, inguinal nerve structures. This variation in practice may confound assessment of long-term neuralgia and other post-herniorrhaphy pain syndromes
Massive Pulmonary Thromboembolism and Stroke
A 38-year-old HIV-positive female, recently started on antiretroviral therapy, presented in extremis. She had features suggestive of an HIV-associated cardiomyopathy complicated by the following problems: a four-day-old stroke, extensive deep venous thrombosis, and massive pulmonary embolism. She received intravenous streptokinase with rapid improvement, both haemodynamically and, unexpectedly, neurologically. Our case illustrates that a positive outcome is potentially possible where the two conditions coincide
