Evolutionary Laws, Initial Conditions, and Gauge Fixing in Constrained Systems
We describe in detail how to eliminate nonphysical degrees of freedom in the
Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of a constrained system. Two important
and distinct steps in our method are the fixing of ambiguities in the dynamics
and the determination of inequivalent initial data. The Lagrangian discussion
is novel, and a proof is given that the final number of degrees of freedom in
the two formulations agrees. We give applications to reparameterization
invariant theories, where we prove that one of the constraints must be
explicitly time dependent. We illustrate our procedure with the examples of
trajectories in spacetime and with spatially homogeneous cosmological models.
Finally, we comment briefly on Dirac's extended Hamiltonian technique.Comment: 23 pages; plain TeX. To appear: Classical & Quantum Gravit
Remarks on the consistency of minimal deviations from General Relativity
We study the consequences of the modification of the phase space structure of
General Relativity imposed by breaking the full diffeomorphism invariance but
retaining the time foliation preserving diffeomorphisms. We examine the
different sectors in phase space that satisfy the new structure of constraints.
For some sectors we find an infinite tower of constraints. In spite of that, we
also show that these sectors allow for solutions, among them some well known
families of black hole and cosmologies which fulfill all the constraints. We
raise some physical concerns on the consequences of an absolute Galilean time,
on the thermodynamical pathologies of such models and on their unusual vacuum
structure.Comment: latex 28 pages, 1 figure. Added comments and a reference. Text

Noether symmetries, energy-momentum tensors and conformal invariance in classical field theory
In the framework of classical field theory, we first review the Noether
theory of symmetries, with simple rederivations of its essential results, with
special emphasis given to the Noether identities for gauge theories. Will this
baggage on board, we next discuss in detail, for Poincar\'e invariant theories
in flat spacetime, the differences between the Belinfante energy-momentum
tensor and a family of Hilbert energy-momentum tensors. All these tensors
coincide on shell but they split their duties in the following sense:
Belinfante's tensor is the one to use in order to obtain the generators of
Poincar\'e symmetries and it is a basic ingredient of the generators of other
eventual spacetime symmetries which may happen to exist. Instead, Hilbert
tensors are the means to test whether a theory contains other spacetime
symmetries beyond Poincar\'e. We discuss at length the case of scale and
conformal symmetry, of which we give some examples. We show, for Poincar\'e
invariant Lagrangians, that the realization of scale invariance selects a
unique Hilbert tensor which allows for an easy test as to whether conformal
invariance is also realized. Finally we make some basic remarks on metric
generally covariant theories and classical field theory in a fixed curved
bakground.Comment: 31 pa
Switching the Conductance of a Molecular Junction using a Proton Transfer Reaction
A novel mechanism for switching a molecular junction based on a proton
transfer reaction triggered by an external electrostatic field is proposed. As
a specific example to demonstrate the feasibility of the mechanism, the
tautomers [2,5-(4-hydroxypyridine)] and {2,5-[4(1H)-pyridone]} are considered.
Employing a combination of first-principles electronic structure calculations
and Landauer transport theory, we show that both tautomers exhibit very
different conductance properties and realize the "on" and "off" states of a
molecular switch. Moreover, we provide a proof of principle that both forms can
be reversibly converted into each other using an external electrostatic field.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Substituting fields within the action: consistency issues and some applications
In field theory, as well as in mechanics, the substitution of some fields in
terms of other fields at the level of the action raises an issue of consistency
with respect to the equations of motion. We discuss this issue and give an
expression which neatly displays the difference between doing the substitution
at the level of the Lagrangian or at the level of the equations of motion. Both
operations do not commute in general. A very relevant exception is the case of
auxiliary variables, which are discussed in detail together with some of their
relevant applications. We discuss the conditions for the preservation of
symmetries - Noether as well as non-Noether - under the reduction of degrees of
freedom provided by the mechanism of substitution. We also examine how the
gauge fixing procedures fit in our framework and give simple examples on the
issue of consistency in this case.Comment: 17 page
On the equivalence of the Einstein-Hilbert and the Einstein-Palatini formulations of general relativity for an arbitrary connection
In the framework of the Einstein-Palatini formalism, even though the
projective transformation connecting the arbitrary connection with the Levi
Civita connection has been floating in the literature for a long time and
perhaps the result was implicitly known in the affine gravity community, yet as
far as we know Julia and Silva were the first to realise its gauge character.
We rederive this result by using the Rosenfeld-Dirac-Bergmann approach to
constrained Hamiltonian systems and do a comprehensive self contained analysis
establishing the equivalence of the Einstein-Palatini and the metric
formulations without having to impose the gauge choice that the connection is
symmetric. We also make contact with the the Einstein-Cartan theory when the
matter Lagrangian has fermions.Comment: 18 pages. Slight change in the title and wording of some sections to

Notes on a SQCD-like plasma dual and holographic renormalization
We study the thermodynamics and the jet quenching parameter of a black hole solution dual to a SQCD-like plasma which includes the backreaction of fundamental flavors. The free energy is calculated in several ways, including some recently proposed holographic renormalization prescriptions. The validity of the latter is confirmed by the consistency with the other methods. The resulting thermodynamic properties are similar to the Little String Theory ones: the temperature is fixed at the Hagedorn value and the free energy is vanishing. Finally, an accurate analysis of the relevant string configurations shows that the jet quenching parameter is zero in this model, in agreement with previous findings
New Relativistic Effects in the Dynamics of Nonlinear Hydrodynamical Waves
In Newtonian and relativistic hydrodynamics the Riemann problem consists of
calculating the evolution of a fluid which is initially characterized by two
states having different values of uniform rest-mass density, pressure and
velocity. When the fluid is allowed to relax, one of three possible
wave-patterns is produced, corresponding to the propagation in opposite
directions of two nonlinear hydrodynamical waves. New effects emerge in a
special relativistic Riemann problem when velocities tangential to the initial
discontinuity surface are present. We show that a smooth transition from one
wave-pattern to another can be produced by varying the initial tangential
velocities while otherwise maintaining the initial states unmodified. These
special relativistic effects are produced by the coupling through the
relativistic Lorentz factors and do not have a Newtonian counterpart.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
