    Background/Aim: To evaluate the research trends in coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Materials and Methods: A bibliometric analysis was performed using a machine learning bibliometric methodology. Information regarding publication outputs, countries, institutions, journals, keywords, funding and citation counts was retrieved from Scopus database. Results: A total of 1883 eligible papers were returned. An exponential increase in the COVID-19 publications occurred in the last months. As expected, China produced the majority of articles, followed by the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Italy. There is greater collaboration between highly contributing authors and institutions. The “BMJ” published the highest number of papers (n=129) and “The Lancet” had the most citations (n=1439). The most ubiquitous topic was COVID-19 clinical features. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis presents the most influential references related to COVID-19 during this time and could be useful to improve understanding and management of COVID-19

    Minimally invasive orthodontics: elastodontic therapy in a growing patient affected by Dentinogenesis Imperfecta

    AIM: The aim of the study was to report the use of an elastodontic therapy in a growing patient affected by Dentinogenesis Imperfecta, second class malocclusion, deep bite and lower arch crowding from the deciduous dentition to permanent one. CASE REPORT: At first, the 5-year-old patient was treated with an elastodontic device known as "Nite-Guide". When the patient was 7 years old, during her first permanent molars and incisors eruption and after optimal house-practices, an Occlus-o-Guide Series G was placed at night and on daylight (two hours a day) performing exercises aimed to activate facial muscles and facilitate the deep bite reopening. At 9 years of age, with totally deep bite resolution, she used the Occluso-Guide only at night to hold down previous results and follow patient's dental growth. At 11 years of age, after successful teeth switching, we prescribed an Occlus-o-Guide Series N, which is functional for permanent dentition and guaranteed an eruptive guide for last dental elements. CONCLUSIONS: This clinic case could be considered an example of approach for all those patients with systemic and/or dental diseases that do not allow adequate dental retention, which is necessary for most orthodontic appliances; elastodontic devices do not require adequate dental retention and define a minimum intervention on the surfaces of the teeth

    Digital evaluation of occlusal forces: comparison between healthy subjects and TMD patients

    ABSTRACT Aim: Continuous technological innovation has provided the clinicians to access to a computerized device that can analyse the different characteristics of occlusal contacts. The purpose of this research was to use this device to study the occlusal forces comparing healthy subjects and TMD patients. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted by following specific criteria to select participants, the sample was divided into two homogeneous groups: control group (CG) comprising healthy subjects, and dysfunctional group (DG) comprising TMD patients. The occlusal force analysis was performed using the computerized system T-Scan III V 5.20 T. The data were analysed with statistical methods. Results: The most significant differences emerged between the groups in the average occlusal load distribution and in the location of the centre of occlusal forces (COF). In particular, compared with the CG and the functional standard, reductions in the molar field forces on the second and first molars of 27% and 6.9%, respectively, were observed in the DG. The COF was located in the most forward position in TMD patients compared with healthy subjects. Conclusions: Although the differences in the distribution of the occlusal forces and the location of the occlusal centre of gravity were significant, the relationship between occlusal contacts and TMD remains to be fully clarified. Further research is needed to investigate whether studying occlusal force distributions in both healthy subjects and TMD patients

    Mechanical qualification of collagen membranes used in dentistry

    The aim of this work is the qualification of commercially available collagen membranes in a comparative manner. The natural origin of collagen makes standardization difficult. Nevertheless, through dimensional and mechanical measures it is possible to mechanically qualify collagen membranes, and compare them.METHODS:Three commercially available collagen membranes used in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) and in Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) techniques, namely Bio-Gide, Collprotect and Jason, were chosen for the comparison. Quasi-static (tensile tests) and time-dependent (stress relaxation test) mechanical tests together with a functional test (tear test) were done to determine the responses of collagen membranes under different loading conditions. RESULTS: The tested membranes exhibited different behaviours, different deformability values and thickness, Jason being the thinnest and Bio-Gide the thickest. Similar differences were also observed in terms of surface density. DISCUSSION: Even though clinical observations were not within the aim of this study, our findings indicate that a better understanding of the correlation between mechanical properties and thickness could lead to a more rational design and use of these membranes in the face of specific clinical cases

    Childhood overweight-obesity and periodontal diseases: is there a real correlation?

    Objective. The association between obesity and periodontitis has been extensively investigated in adults but not in young people. The aim of this study was to examine the association between overweight-obesity and periodontal disease in pediatric subjects. Methods. Controlled cross-sectional study involving 100 school children of both gender (50 M and 50 F) between 7 and 12 years of age (mean age 9,19 +/- 1,57). Two groups were formed based on Body Mass Index value: test group with BMI >= 25 Kg/m(2) and control group with BMI <= 24 Kg/m(2). Diet intake and oral hygiene habits were recorded by a specific questionnaire and the periodontal clinical parameters were evaluated. Results. The periodontal examination in the control group revealed a full-mouth plaque score (FMPS) value equal to 21.86% against 50.08% in the group of patients overweight/obese; the full-mouth bleeding score (FMBS) in the control group amounted to 12.7% against 26.24% of test group. No patient in either group included in the study presented a probing pocket depth (PPD) >= 3, so a significant difference regarding this value was not found. Regarding the frequency and quantity of food consumption, the number of obese patients who did not follow a balanced diet largely exceeded the number of normal-weight patients (70 versus 20%). Conclusions. These results focus the attention on the negative impact of obesity on gingival health in young subjects, probably due to a combination of metabolic and inflammatory profiles and the result of a careless attitude towards prevention diseases of the oral cavit

    Relationship between cervical spine and skeletal class II in subjects with and without temporomandibular disorders

    AIM. To assess changes of cranio-cervical structure and of hyoid bone position in skeletal Class II subjects with and without Temporomandibular disorders (TMD). MATERIAL AND METHODS. The cephalometric analysis of 59 subjects with skeletal Class II were evaluated and compared. The measurements considerated were: ANB as parameter of Class II and C0-C1 distance, C1-C2 distance, cranio-cervical angle and hyoid bone position for the cervical spine analysis. Patients were divided into two subgroups: patients with TMD (group A) and patients without TMD (group B). TMD were evaluated with the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). Descriptive statistics and Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis, with p-value <0,005, were performed. RESULTS. C0-C1 and C1-C2 distance values and hyoid bone position resulted within normal range in the majority of patients examined. Cranio-cervical angle was alterated in 33 patients. The reduction of this angle with the increase of the ANB value resulted statistically significant in the group A, according to Pearson correlation index. No other data was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS. Significant relationship between skeletal Class II and cervical spine cannot be highlighted. The alteration of cranio-cervical angle seems to be mildly present, with backward counterclockwise rotation of the head upon the neck in the sample (group A and B). The presence of TMDs as key factor in changes of neck posture could explain the different result between the two groups about relationship between ANB and cranio-cervical angle. This result should be further analyzed in order to better understand if cervical spine changes could be related to mandibular postural ones in the cranio-cervical space or to temporomandibular joints retropositioning, more recognizable in Class II with TMD, which could determine functional changes in other structures of this unit; neck posture also could be the result of a compensatory/ antalgic mechanism in response to TM

    Oral plaque from Type 2 diabetic patients reduces the clonogenic capacity of dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stem cells

    Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major metabolic disease and a key epigenetic risk factor for the development of additional clinical complications. Among them, periodontitis (PD), a severe inflammatory disease ascribable to a dysregulated physiology and composition of the oral microbiota, represents one of the most relevant complications. Periodontitis can impact the structure of the tooth and likely the stem and progenitor cell pool, which actively contributes to the periodontal microenvironment and homeostasis. Modifications of the oral plaque play a key role in the etiopathogenesis of PD caused by T2D. However, to what extent the biology of the progenitor pool is affected has still to be elucidated. In this short report, we aimed to explore the biological effects of oral plaque derived from T2D patients with PD in comparison to non-diabetic patients with PD. Oral plaque samples were isolated from T2D and non-diabetic subjects with PD. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), derived from the premolar tooth, were conditioned for 21 days with oral plaque samples and tested for their clonogenic ability. Cultures were also induced to differentiate towards the osteogenic lineage, and ALP and osteocalcin gene expression levels were evaluated by real-time qPCR. Results have shown that the number of clones generated by DPSCs exposed to T2D oral plaque was significantly lower compared to controls (ctl). The multivariate analysis confirmed that the decreased clonogenesis was significantly correlated only with T2D diagnosis. Moreover, the effect of T2D oral plaque was specific to DPSCs. Indicators of osteogenic differentiation were not significantly affected. This study provides a new biological insight into the effects ascribable to T2D in PD
