Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Review

    No full text
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder determined by a complex of factors (genetic and environmental). On a pathophysiological basis hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been suggested as an effective therapeutic method in ASD, and thus many parents/guardians attempt to treat their child with ASD using this method. Therefore, this review aimed to verify the significant therapeutic value of this method for individuals with ASD. The literature review included all articles from the last 5 years (2015–2021) that met the inclusion criteria—both original papers and literature reviews. None of the 10 literature reviews indicated that HBOT was a clearly effective form of therapy in the case of ASD. Two out of four papers presenting the results of the intervention studies also did not recommend the use of this form of therapy in children with ASD. The results of the other two studies were not entirely relevant to the purpose of this review because one study had no control group, while the other study focused solely on auditory processing disorders. A review of the literature on whether HBOT as a therapy significantly affects the symptoms of ASD does not confirm its effectiveness

Hypertension is a serious health issue both in Poland and worldwide. It has been demonstrated that hypertension diagnosed in childhood persists in adulthood. Therefore, knowledge of the risk factors, prophylaxis and treatment of hypertension are crucial due to its serious medical and social consequences. Early identification of risk factors for hypertension allows to implement targeted preventive actions leading to the modification of habits connected with lifestyle, which in turn may lead to a reduction in the incidence of the disease or reduce its effects. The aim of the paper is to characterize the relationship between the occurrence of excessive body mass and hypertension in adults and in children and adolescents. Material and methods. A review of Polish and foreign literature mainly from the last 10 years. The following databases were searched: PubMed, EBSCO, Science Direct, Termedia, Polish Medical Bibliography. Materiał i metoda. Dokonano przeglądu piśmiennictwa. Przeszukano następujące bazy danych: PubMed, EBSCO, Science Direct, Termedia, Polska Bibliografia Lekarska. krajowego i zagranicznego, głównie z ostatnich 10 lat

Streszczenie Wstęp: Ocena stabilności ciała przeprowadzona przy użyciu platformy stabilometrycznej stanowi obiektywną metodę diagnostyczną. Porównanie parametrów stabilogramów otrzymanych w badaniu z oczami otwartymi i zamkniętymi umożliwia umożliwia ocenę kontroli postawy z wyłączeniem informacji wzrokowej. Materiał i metody: Do badań zakwalifikowano 98 kobiet w wieku powyżej 60 lat (x = 71 lat). Wnioski: 1. Wyłączenie kontroli wzrokowej prowadzi do istotnego wydłużenia długości ścieżki stabilogramu w płaszczyźnie strzałkowej (SPAP); 2. Długość ścieżki w płaszczyźnie czołowej (SPML) ulega skróceniu w próbie z oczami zamkniętymi.Abstract Background: Assessment of the stability of the body performed by using stabilometric platform is an objective diagnostic method. Comparison of stabilograms’ parameters received from test with eyes open and closed, allows to assess the role of the visual senses involved in postural control. The aim of the study was to evaluate parameters of stabilogram of women over 60 years of age without visual control. Material and methods: 98 women (over 60 years of age, x = 71 years old) participated in the study. Standing balance was assessed in the trial with eyes open and closed, by using stabilometric platform. Six different motion parameters of center of pressure (COP) were evaluated. Results: 1. The results of this study indicate that in the trial without visual control, the path length in the sagittal plane was significantly longer. The values of: total path length, mean amplitude, mean velocity and sway area have worsened in the trial without visual control, but the result was not statistically significant. 2. Disabling visual control has contributed to reduction (improvement) of path length in the frontal plane.Abstract Background: Assessment of the stability of the body performed by using stabilometric platform is an objective diagnostic method. Plantar fasciitis is reported as the most common cause of chronic plantar heel pain. An extra-corporeal shock waves have been used in the treatment of plantar fasciitis with promising results. The purpose of this paper was to present results from randomized controlled trials to estimate of the effectiveness of ESWT in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. Method: MEDLINE, EBCO, PubMed, ScienceDirect and SpringerLink databases were searched, using the keywords: ESWT, plantar fasciitis, shock wave, randomized clinical trials. Results: Ten randomized clinical trials was critically appraised. Eight studies report significant decreases in pain symptoms and better function scores associated with an extra-corporeal shock wave therapy. However two studies show no meaningful improvement of clinical outcome in patients treated with extracorporeal shock wave therapy for chronic plantar fasciitis compared with placebo. Summary: In most cases shockwaves therapy was a safe and effective method for treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis and helped the patient to avoid surgery for recalcitrant heel pain but warrants further larger studies.

    No full text
Introduction. Children and adolescents with intellectual disability (ID) have significantly lower levels of physical activity compared to their peers without ID. Association between the level of physical activity and screen time with hypertension (HPT) in children and adolescents with ID has not been reported yet. Aim. To assess the relationship between the level of physical activity and screen time with the prevalence of HPT in students with ID. Material and Methods. The study group consisted of 568 children with ID aged 7 to 18. The control group matched for age and gender consisted of 568 students without ID. Blood pressure (BP), body mass and height, level of physical activity, and screen time were assessed. Results. The level of physical activity in the study group was significantly lower than in the control group (score 1.99 versus 3.02, resp., in Physical Activity Questionnaire). The risk of HPT in the students with ID with low levels of physical activity was more than 4 times higher (OR = 4.40) and more than 2 times higher when screen time was ≥2 h/day. Conclusion. Low level of physical activity and long screen time were associated with significantly higher HPT risk among children and adolescents with ID

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructur

Cel pracy. Ocena wysklepienia łuków stopy prawej i lewej podczas obciążenia i odciążenia u dzieci w wieku 10-12 lat. Materiał i metody. Badaniami objęto grupę 159 uczniów szkoły podstawowej w Rzeszowie, województwo podkarpackie. Wśród badanych było 77 chłopców (48%) i 82 dziewczynki (52%). Wiek badanych mieścił się w przedziale 10-12 lat, 10-latkowie (51 osób) i 11- latkowie (51 osób) stanowili po 32%, natomiast najliczniejszą grupę badanych stanowili 12-latkowie (57 osób), którzy stanowili 36%. Do komputerowej oceny stóp wykorzystano CQ Elektronik System. Wyniki. Wnioski. Introduction. The foot is a complex biokinematic structure. In the process of phylogenesis it undergoes a number of changes that adapt it to the task of carrying heavy and dynamic loads. The development of the foot to its length is greater than to its width. The correctly developed foot is springy owing to the properly developed foot arches – the longitudinal and the transverse arches. Aim of the study. The assessment of foot arches of the left and the right foot in weight- bearing and in non-weight bearing conditions in children 10-12 years of age. Material and methods. The study population consisted of 159 students of a primary school in Rzeszów, Poland. There were 77 boys (48%) and 82 girls (52%) in the study population. The subjects’ age was between 10 and 12 years, with 10-year-olds (51 subjects) and 11-year-olds (51 subjects) consisting 32% of the group each, and 12-year-olds (57 subjects) consisting 36% of the group. We used CQ Elektronik System for computer assessment of the feet.Results. For all three measurements, Wejsflog’s index values, for both the right and the left foot, were within the range of 2.55-3.00, which means that the feet had correct arches. We observed the lowest value (2.6 - still within the norm, though) for the right foot in the third measurement – singleleg standing in weight-bearing conditions. We observed the greatest value (3.0) in the left foot in bilateral standing, with weight evenly distributed. The Clarke’s angle in non-weight bearing conditions (sitting) revealed excessive longitudinal foot arches in children, both in the right (53.5) and the left (53.4) foot. In bilateral standing, both the right foot and the left foot had proper longitudinal arches (45.2 and 42.7, respectively). In the third measurement – single-leg standing, weight bearing conditions – both the right and the left foot’s longitudinal arches were lowered (37.2 and 35.2, respectively). Conclusions. The feet of the study population were weak – when sitting (non-weight bearing conditions), they had excessive foot arches, while in single-leg weight-bearing conditions (standing) they had lowered foot arches. This condition points at a muscle or ligament dysfunction of the feet

    No full text
Introduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the compatibility of external measurements of parameters characterizing scoliosis using the photogrammetric method. Material. The study involved 120 children between the ages of 7 and 11 years in Podkarpackie (Poland). Method. Measurements of body posture characteristics were performed using the photogrammetric method with mora projection. Each person was examined twice, once by two different therapists, with a time lapse of 20 minutes in between examinations. Results. High accuracy and no statistical significance were found among different measurements of asymmetry parameters characterizing the shoulder blades and hips. Regularities were also found in the characteristic measurements of curves of scoliosis. The POSTI parameter showed a significant variation and lack of compatibility of results. Conclusions. (1) The photogrammetric method used to assess the pathological changes caused by scoliosis gives significant results in terms of parameters characterizing the position of the shoulder blades and shoulders, as well as pelvis rotation. (2) High compliance measurements are also characterized by the length of the right and left arcs of scoliosis

Sexual violence against women, including rape, is a serious public health issue in many countries. Rape victims often meet health professionals in medical institutions for a range of health problems. The aim of this research was investigation of attitudes towards rape victims among medical students. Methods: The study sample consisted of 1183 university students who represented various medical disciplines. The average age of the respondents was 23.3 years. The Attitudes toward Rape Victims Scale (ARVS) was used in this study. Results: Higher scores in men indicate that they held less sympathetic attitudes towards rape victims than women (61.6 vs. 52.6, p = 0.0000). Given the univariate interaction, social environment, and religious commitment did not significantly differentiate the respondents in this respect. Students of the medical faculty obtained the lowest results (medicine 49.7 vs. midwifery and nursing: 54.1, other fields: 54.4, p = 0.0008), showing much understanding and empathy for rape victims. Conclusions: The surveyed medical students presented moderately positive attitudes towards rape victims, among them men somewhat negative than women who made more pro-victim judgments. Among all medical field of study, medicine was distinguished by higher empathy. Religion and social environment independently do not differentiate respondents in this respect
