    Q-enhanced fold-and-bond MEMS inductors

    Get PDF
This work presents a novel coil fabrication technology to enhance quality factor (Q factor) of microfabricated inductors for implanted medical wireless sensing and data/power transfer applications. Using parylene as a flexible thin-film device substrate, a post-microfabrication substrate folding-and-bonding method is developed to effectively increase the metal thickness of the surface-micromachined inductors, resulting in their lower self-resistance so their higher quality factor. One-fold-and-bond coils are successfully demonstrated as an example to verify the feasibility of the fabrication technology with measurement results in good agreements with device simulation. Depending on target specifications, multiple substrate folding-and-bonding can be extensively implemented to facilitate further improved electrical characteristics of the coils from single fabrication batch. Such Q-enhanced inductors can be broadly utilized with great potentials in flexible integrated wireless devices/systems for intraocular prostheses and other biomedical implants

Complementary Therapy with Traditional Chinese Medicine for Ischemic Stroke

    Get PDF
Stroke has remained the leading cause of morbidity or mortality worldwide over the past decade. Stroke survivors suffer various degrees of disability and also contribute to the large socioeconomic disease burden. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) serves as an important alternative or complementary therapy in many countries. This chapter aims to explore the utility of TCM for ischemic stroke, including a review of recent literature on the mechanisms of herbal medicine and acupuncture therapy on ischemic stroke, a summary of clinical trial results for the safety and efficacy of acupuncture, and finally a discussion of acupuncture as a preventive therapy for ischemic stroke in clinical practice. On the basis of these reports, more and more scientific evidences suggest that TCM use was safe for ischemic stroke at acute and subacute stages. Moreover, TCM has benefit for stroke recovery as well as it reduces the likelihood of hospital readmission for cardiovascular or subsequent stroke events

The collapse of a cavitation bubble in shear flows—A numerical study

The collapse of a cavitation bubble is examined by direct numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations, using a finite difference/front tracking technique. Bubbles in both a quiescent fluid as well as shear flows are examined. For quiescent fluid, the results are compared with theoretical and previous computational results. For bubbles in a shear flow it is shown that large shear can increase the rate of collapse, and for bubbles near boundaries shear can eliminate the re‐entrant jet seen for bubbles in a quiescent flow. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/69789/2/PHFLE6-7-11-2608-1.pd

Effect of Processing Temperature on the Properties of a Polyvinyl Chloride Maxillofacial Elastomer

Mechanical properties and color of a plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) maxillofacial elastomer were evaluated at processing temperatures from 140 to 190°C. The properties were dependent on processing temperature. Specimens prepared at 170°C had optimum mechanical properties with minimal discoloration.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66749/2/10.1177_00220345830620102001.pd

Time-Delayed Magnetic Control and Narrowing of X-Ray frequency Spectra in Two-Target Nuclear Forward Scattering

Controlling and narrowing x-ray frequency spectra in magnetically perturbed two-target nuclear forward scattering is theoretically studied. We show that different hard-x-ray spectral redistributions can be achieved by single or multiple switching of magnetic field in nuclear targets. Our scheme can generate x-ray spectral lines with tenfold intensity enhancement and spectral width narrower than four times the nuclear natural linewidth. The present results pave the way towards a brighter and flexible x-ray source for precision spectroscopy of nuclear resonances using modern synchrotron radiation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Stain Removal from a Silicone Maxillofacial Elastomer

In this study, environmental stains were removed from maxillofacial elastomers by solvent extraction. Silastic 44210, an RTV silicone with proven color and physical property stability, was stained with lipstick, disclosing solution, and methylene blue. These stains were then removed by solvent extraction with each of four chemically dissimilar solvents, namely: toluene, benzene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and n-hexane. An additional series of samples was prepared with 11 maxillofacial pigments, not for staining, but for evaluation of pigment stability. Results obtained from spectrophotometric measurements before and after solvent extraction demonstrated the effectiveness of solvent extraction in removing stains, while there was little or no change in the color of the pigments or the base elastomer.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66797/2/10.1177_00220345810600100501.pd

In the dinuclear salen-type title complex, [CuNa(BF4)(C18H18N2O4)(CH3OH)], the CuII atom is chelated by two O atoms and two N atoms of the deprotonated Schiff base in a square-planar geometry. The Na atom is seven-coordinate as it is linked to four O atoms of the same Schiff base ligand, one O atom of the methanol and two tetrafluoridoborate F atoms. The remaining two F atoms of the anion are disordered over two sites in a 0.598 (18):0.402 (18) ratio
